No, these guys aren't interested in intimidating people at all...

The Republicans are going overboard on this. While most Americans may support the right to bear arms, I don't think moderate voters are going to feel good about this.

Lets not lump all republicans. There are some folks that vote with them that are not advocates of people grabbing a gun and bringing it to a rally ;)

I was watching Jon Stewart last night, he had another good one

Grasping at straws - sorry. I am still laughing that it was actually a black guy. I am wondering if Jon Stewart was aware of it, or would have commented on it if he knew.

Not one of the MSM news agencies made note of it in the original reporting - thus leading to everyone assuming it was some right-wing radical redneck type.

Why is that "grasping at straws"? If some black dude with a gun showed up at a Rush Limbaugh speaking event, do you really think the hardcore righties would just say "oh well he's just exercising his right to bear arms"?

What's really sad - if it becomes more well known then this guy will have his life put up for review by MSM to understand what is wrong with him - that way they can figure out that secretly he is a redneck who got a reverse Michael Jackson skin treatment.

Sorry, just now you are trying to redirect the discussion to an irrelevant question. I kind of like exploring this whole issue on why a black guy would find it important to carry his AR-15 to a rally. War vet?

The real cause for concern is that all of these inbred, white trash militia groups now know that they can bring their guns to a rally and won't be stopped. If they care less about living than they do about killing, it's going to be a huge problem.

Much like other issues we discuss - the more attention paid to these groups, the more likely it is to happen (them bringing weapons). I think if the media would quit sensationalizing the issue they wouldn't even bother.

I am guessing if a militia group showed up in force at a rally, they would probably see an increased presence from local authorities.

No - I am not. I am just laughing because it was a black guy. Every other picture you have of this (in my head, your head, etc) is a bunch of rednecks.

Look, I agree it is stupid to bring guns to the rally (I posted it in the other thread about it) - just having this guy be the one bringing the AR-15 throws the whole discussion in a different light. Who knows why he brought it - I am actually curious. I was under the impression that only stupid white guys would bring guns to a rally.

It's definitely a "common sense" issue.

Those with a lacking in common sense would think it is a good idea to bring a gun to a protest rally where the President and Secret Service would be coming.

Common sense tells you it makes little sense to come there with one. Is there some threat to be worried about that you might have to defend yourself so you need to exercise your free carry rights? I mean sure, going out in the desert to hike you might run into a snake, mountain lion, something like that would require a gun. But honestly, it just speaks volumes of DUMB in a place where police and others are having to worry about the safety of the President or bystanders.

There is no radical wing of republican party, unless you call people who disagree radical. I dont see a radical wing of either party. I see wierd people trying to make ass's of themself but there is no organized radical wing.
When ever anyone doesnt agree with obama they are radical or racist, this is no more than a weopon used to try yo downplay someone else who has a differant opinon.
I think usining the remarks and statments shows a fear or an inability to discuss things. Its a last ditch effort when your arguments are weak.

One protester who didn't want to give his name was walking around with a rifle in full view.

"I'm exercising my right as an American in Arizona," he said. "I'm actually totally against healthcare in this way, in this manner, stealing it from people. I don't think that's appropriate."

The man also carried a hand gun on his hip and a round of ammunition in his back pocket, all completely legal.

He said he's fighting both health care and his right to carry a firearm in public.

"I come from another state where open carry is legal, but no one does it, so police don't really know about it, and they harass people and arrest people falsely," he said. "In America, people have the ability to fight back and resist."

...

He had an extra clip for his AR-15 sticking out of his back pocket.

as someone who's family has recently submitted claims to health insurance companies its ass backwards. The fucking insurance companies are limiting health care claims not socialism. They are doling out small parcels of health care and lording all our money over our heads. The reformers want you to get all the health care at reasonable prices.

It is private insurance companies that ration care by deciding what is covered and what is not. Private plans limit which doctor and hospital you can use, define "preexisting conditions" and make insurance unaffordable for tens of millions. For many, all this can cause suffering and sometimes even death. Our one oasis of socialized medicine, Medicare, has the most choice and the least exclusion.

After receiving nearly a trillion dollars of taxpayer aid, Wall Street is returning to business as usual. Consider: Firms that received government help, after losing fortunes in 2008, still found money to pay out exorbitant bonuses at public expense. Why arent conservative protestors walking around the stock exchanges with assault rifles?

Far too little of the government's aid to Wall Street is trickling down. Because of the administration's decision to target $75 billion in mortgage-relief aid to banks and mortgage companies rather than to beleaguered homeowners, foreclosures are still increasing far faster than loan modifications.

I can already tell that universal drug and medical coverage will help you under the Obama plan - if it gets there. Until then, remember this:

Most people want health care reform. But Medicare is spending money at a phenomenal rate, and they are looking to cut funding there and trying to make it palatable. But just because it needs to be reformed, doesn't mean it needs to completely roll over to a single-payer, or even a government run option to supposedly increase competition. There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument for sure. Someone needs to sit down, who is not in the pockets of insurers or the AMA folks, and come up with a common sense answer looking at both sides, and then seeing if we can all agree on it. Right now, special interests on both sides are trying to paint it as some black and white issue - so we have have:

1. Status Quo: Which is BS for all the reasons of pre-exisiting conditions, denial of coverage for various reasons (rationing), and getting the run-around on dealing with how things get paid, Insurance companies running "for-profit" with executive salaries that are making millions of dollars

or

2. Government Run Health Insurance and Health Care: Smacks of socialisim, potentially leads to single payer, QALY or weighted services toward younger people (rationing) using this system Ezekial Emanuel advocates.

We need something in the middle. Something along the lines of:

- Eliminate pre-existing condition clauses
- Make health care insurance plans cover entire country instead of local only
- Allow for government vouchers to allow lower income people to pay for a plan, or setup government sponsored clinics that provide wellness care but can refer folks to emergency services or surgical services if needed (safety net). Vouchers would be tied to local jurisdiction management with re-imbursement from the Fed so that proper LOCAL oversight can be established
- Federal oversight of pharmaceutical rates and supplier costs based on comparisons with what is being charged in other countries for same meds and supplies.
- Eliminate or limit for-profit (yes, not totally capitalism)
- limit executive salaries (as a not-for-profit)
- train more doctors to reduce scarcity issues in under served areas (AMA artificially limits them now)
- government acts as (a better) regulator not manager of insurance and health care.

etc.

That way we keep free market forces in play to help limit insurance costs, but also increase supply of doctor services to reduce costs.

Agreed for the hybrid option. I'll also add to federalize the whole lot and take the states out of the equation.

Also, we need tort reform of some sort. At least a cap on damage awards where it's enough to punish them, but not let them off the hook.

On that note, we need restrictions to curb serial litigators. You shouldn't be able to continually sue doctors for every procedure ever done to you. They need to limit this to a flat monetary amount and/or limit the number of civil suits that can be brought by one individual.

Agreed on tort also - I had something about it in the other thread on this where the cap was actual costs and damages was based on some X factor times years of salary averages to award a number figure. Have to look at other things to determine X.

Successful malpractice lawsuit would result in loss of license nationally, and civil suits would be limited by requiring the person bringing suit to pay lawyer fee penalties if they lose. Some kind of escrow cost if you have filed litigation before that has failed more than 3 or 4 times or something. That is beyond my thinking at the moment :)

I concur. The premise of heath care was ensuring that insurance carriers stick to their promise of covering was was expected to cover and providing was was promised.

It has morphed into a universal coverage (Canada system) program. Thats where people have begun to question the motives...

Good to see that you're spun up like a little top. Maybe you could post four more random thoughts for the edification of the audience.

And note, none of the tort reform would stop litigation like in the Grisham book "The Rainmaker" - if an insurance company makes it a run around to deny claims to make money (even if they are a non-profit) then they need to be taken to task.

Yes, I'm with you on that. I'm talking about some report I read recently in one of our weekly law digests about the the overall percentage of malpractice suits made by individuals who either previously won an award or failed trying. Don't quote me, but if I recall, it was nearly 35%.

That's rediculous.

on page 425 of the health care bill, so we started there. Indeed, Sec. 1233 of the bill, labeled "Advance Care Planning Consultation" details how the bill would, for the first time, require Medicare to cover the cost of end-of-life counseling sessions.

According to the bill, "such consultation shall include the following: An explanation by the practitioner of advance care planning, including key questions and considerations, important steps, and suggested people to talk to; an explanation by the practitioner of advance directives, including living wills and durable powers of attorney, and their uses; an explanation by the practitioner of the role and responsibilities of a health care proxy."

Medicare will cover one session every five years, the legislation states. If a patient becomes very ill in the interim, Medicare will cover additional sessions.

So? We already covered that. Is this just some random thought that popped this out? Do you have an issue with it? :)

Radical? How about applying such labels towards the nut-huggers supporting Obama?
