Gun Etiquette
Posted by: Vince(1) ()
Date: August 16, 2009 01:02PM

I am slowly becoming convinced that in the relatively near future...almost everyone is going to need to publically carry a gun. I just want to make sure I understand any official or unofficial rules.

So here's my "question"....

Two persons are walking toward each other...both publically carrying a holstered gun. As these two persons approach each other one starts to unholster his gun (is that the correct terminology?). What assumptions and what appropriate response should the other person take?

Deadwood these days is nothing more than a major tourist trap and the only
"duel" going on is with the City Council over the budget.

Vince seems to have gained his knowledge of firearms from watching too much
Gunsmoke on tv when he was a child. Fairfax aint Dodge City either, but hey!
Vince, if you need to know something about quick-draw, watch this several
hundred times and practice in front of the mirror with your water pistol.

The other person should immediately produce a bouquet of flowers not costing less than $15 and give them to the individual brandishing the weapon.

Don't look at me, I don't write the rules.

It doesn't matter, Vince; since people don't kill people, the guns would leap from their holsters and shoot at everyone indiscriminately all by themselves.

However, if we must keep it closer to reality, then I'd say the only appropriate response is a Quentin Tarantino-style gun battle in the middle of the street, taking out as many innocent bystanders as possible (preferably women and kids).

Here's two typical Fairfax dudes who are both open carrying and approaching each
other on the sidewalk.

Dude A: Hello there. Is that a Glock you're carrying?

Dude B: Well yeah, its a G37 in .45 G.A.P.

Dude A: Wow! Nice gun. I've seen them on the shelf but never fired one.

Dude B: It's sweet and I'm getting some great shot groups. Real smooth.

Dude A: Great. How about your holster rig?

Dude B: It's a TAPCO. BTW, what's that you're carrying?

Dude A: This is a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 Mag but I'm packing .38 Specials.
Lot less recoil and I have more control over the muzzle climb.

Dude B: And the holster rig?

Dude A: Got it on sale last year at Cabelas. I like the way it fits and
the leather loop slides over the hammer really well. It still cost
plenty but it goes with my shoes. My wife picked it out. Sigh..

No Vince, we don't shoot each other.

I would suggest that they both slowly take aim at an idiot named Vince and each empty their magazines, calmly reload and complete that step again.

The assumption is you should look behind you because he saw the bad guy you didn't. Then duck.

Seriously Vince, who cares? The folks that do carry usually get concealed permits so your premise is wrong in more than one way. The short answer is, if someone draws on you (and you are carrying a gun), and you know their intent is to shoot you, I would suggest you shoot them first. If you don't know their intent, i suggest you duck.

I would also suggest you not open carry a gun unless you want to get a lot of attention by the police.

So...under my scenario actual intent is unknown..you think the benifit of the doubt should go to the person drawing his gun. Cool.

I would suggest you duck, and then call the police. I don't know that I said anything about benefit of the doubt. I just would not draw a gun unless I had good reason to.

Well here's what I was thinking..no one should draw a gun unless they plan on using it. When a person draws their gun..they are in effect commiting an agressive act which any police officer would assume is directed toward them..and therefor I am entitled to think it is directed toward me.

But I like the idea of calling the police.

There you go sticking your head in the sand again. Every week the NRA has some new initiative to weaken gun controls...

Accrding to this totally unreliable web site....90 out of 100 people statisctially already own guns..and it grows..and grows.

assuming the study is valid, "90 Guns per 100 People" does not mean 90% of the population has a gun. for all you know it's "1 in every 1000 people owns 900 guns". the article does not specify the type of firearm, it's intended use, if it's stored (in case of emergency) or if it's even been bought as opposed to being for sale or for rent (firing range).

if you have a problem with people owning guns, just move to a country where they are illegal. your incessant posting on such matters are completely non-productive.

It's the soccer moms who get all freaked out, call the cops, the cops come and shrug their shoulders and tell the frantic mother that it's perfectly legal to carry a gun in the state of virginia.

I wouldn't be surprised if the dispatchers now just explain that over the phone and don't bother sending a cop anymore.

Simple answer Vince(1) is that if somebody unholsters a gun in front of you, you should run as fast as you can towards the person with the gun, insert the barrel into your mouth, and try your best impression of Bud Dwyer.

Actually...all those guns are owned by about 26% of the population. Which means a lot of people have their own arsenal of guns. Im sure the NRA is working to at least make that number the majority of AMericans...51%

Vince, you just want to ask a question that you hope will prompt someone, anyone to answer in a way that you can use to justify your silly belief that all guns should be outlawed. As someone who tries to come across as so wise and insightful, I would think you'd be above the coy little "I'm just asking a simple question because I genuinely care" approach. An answer isn't what you want, just something to justify the propaganda you've bought into.

Sometimes, I think you're a moderately intelligent individual who suffers from little more than caring about his cause too much. Then you ask these kind of loaded questions with the intent to stir shit up, and I go back to thinking you're just another smug, self-righteous asshole.

my question was an honest one given the trend this country is on.

You know that's a bullshit statement, so stop the doe-eyed "I'm totally innocent" routine.

You're saying that within the next 30 years (which is a generous upper limit of your lifespan, considering that you're in your 50's), you think that every civilian on the street will be forced to carry a firearm openly (I'm assuming for safety, but you can never be sure with you), and you would like to know what to do in case you see someone going for their gun (in public, presumably surrounded by other people carrying guns).

It's a bullshit question because there is NOTHING to suggest that society is going to decline so much in the next 30 or even 50 years that it will be necessary to be strapped every time you leave your house (presumably, due to the government's inability to provide police protection).

It's insulting that you think you have the right to talk down to all of us like we're a bunch of feebs, and yet you turn around and do dumb shit like this.

Grow up, Vince.

And what has happened to society to justify the hording of guns and ammo to the point that 90% of the US citizens statistically own a gun? And personally I think what will happen is that a majority of people will own a gun within 20 years.

You know Vince, I don't own a gun.

Funny thing is, if I thought that there was a significant number of people that think like you do, and could realistically take away my right to own a gun, I would go out tomorrow and buy at least one and plenty of ammunition.

Go right ahead..the odds are you'll purposefully or accidentally use it on yourself..or a family member before you ever use it to stop a crime.

And finally, after all that foreplay, you finally get to your true point, which is "there are too many guns in the United States."

The part in bold shows how far you're willing to go to distort the truth to suit your own purposes. According to my well-documented research, there is statistically a 50% chance of being raped by every hispanic you meet.

Statistically, 100% of people named Vince that post on Fairfax Underground are retarded.

See what I did there?

How does one "statistically own a gun"?

Does this mean that I actually own a gun, or at least, if I was in a room with 10 people, there's a good chance that I statistically own a gun, even If I don't even know it?

To be honest, I'm more concerned with the probability that most people in this country will own pit bulls, eventually.

yes...there are enough guns in the US to arm 90% of the people with one gun.

I hope there is not much concern about this issue... I own a pit bull and he is the nicest dog I've ever owned. I don't think the breed is the problem but, rather, the owners who are typically attracted to the breed.
There I go with Nature vs. Nurture again...

Don't worry, I'm with you on the nature vs. nurture thinking.

I was just analogizing guns with another fear.

I have a cockapoo that I raised using the Michael Vick school of dog training.

Your pit pull wouldn't stand a chance against my little tapout dog.

Nature vs. nurture. While your pit bull was raised properly to be a good canine citizen, my little mutt concoction was raised only to hate and attack and kill.

Okay, I don't actually own a cockapoo, and I would never raise a dog any other way than to never even know violence was an option. I even teach my dogs not to have food aggression, by playing with their food, taking some of it away and giving them treats while they eat. I have never owned a dog that would growl at me or snap at me.

Reportedly two of the more intelligent breeds. Maybe she can post a comment or 2 on here and improve the overall intelligence level.

Not so sure about the intelligence of the Border Collie. My roommate had one, and one day, the dog was walking through the kitchen, and she liked the smell of whatever was in the oven. So she licked the oven door. It was that day that I discovered that dogs can say "OW!"

My dog talks to me all the time.

The other day, he asked me if I thought Ben Bernanke would be able to turn the economy around in time to avoid a second wave of foreclosures, this time in the commercial property sector.

He lost me when he started going off on a riff about some Macroeconomic theory that was way over my head.
