Finally. That little Turkic Hitler has gone on too far.

Turkish military has a history of "retiring" civilian leaders who try to fart higher than their asses and this one has spent the better part of his administration trying to emasculate the Turkish military. Good for them.

Erdogan had just fired the heat of their equivalent of the CIA, the MIT. They had ties to the terrorist groups in Syria and the one that set off bombs in Bangkok.

Yeah, it's a secular democracy just waiting to happen. Led by the elite liberal intellectuals. Just like in Egypt.

Despite the fact that 98% of the population identify as Muslim.

I know that you're completely full of shit.

And you haven't been right about ANYTHING related to foreign affairs.

And, just like Egypt, that a country that's 98% Muslim isn't ever going to be 'secular' or a 'liberal democracy' given a choice lol

Arab spring has been mentioned as an issue.

For those who don't know Turkey (and Iraq) were "euro" areas.

Iraq was recently (last several decades) attacked and taken over by muslims.

Turkey on the other hand has become (mostly?) muslim over say 1,500 years of migration. (after the fall of Greece, some migrated there, which was already a nomadic reagion having trade on the sea)

The country's official language is Turkish, a Turkic language spoken natively by approximately 85 percent of the population.[20] 70–75 percent of the population are ethnic Turks; and about 25-30% of the population consists of recognized (Armenians, Greeks, Jews) and unrecognized (Kurds, Circassians, Arabs, Albanians, Bosniaks, Georgians, etc.) minorities.

Over the years many wars were fought, influences prevailed and fell, often between euro neighbor influences and muslim neighbor influences.

This is just the latest in a string of military coups spanning the second half of the twentieth century. The Turkish military, which had lost significant power under president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has long considered itself-and has been considered by some - a guardian of the country's democracy, due to a history of intervention to maintain secularism in the country.

Military officials were arrested for allegedly being part of a secret organization called Ergenekon which was already trying to overthrow Erdogan while he was prime minister, in 2002. But even before that, the army has seized control of the government of modern Turkey, often to defend against perceived threats to the strong secularity desired by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the former army officer founder of the Republic of Turkey.

May 27, 1960

This coup took place at a moment when the ruling party, breaking away from the strict rules imposed by Ataturk, began to allow religious practices, including the opening of hundreds of mosques and permitting prayers in Arabic.

When the army took power, coup leader Cemal Gursel declared that "the purpose and the aim of the coup is to bring the country with all speed to a fair, clean, and solid democracy," and that the army aimed to hand over power to a democratically elected government. Gursel eventually held power as prime minister and president until 1966.

Mar. 12, 1971

Tensions within different sides of Turkey's political spectrum and economic stagnation led military general Memduh Tagma to initiate what is known as a "coup by memorandum." Rather than a straight-out military intervention, he gave then-prime minister Suleyman Demirel an ultimatum, demanding "the formation, within the context of democratic principles, of a strong and credible government, which will neutralize the current anarchical situation." The memorandum led to Demirel's resignation. The military didn't directly seize power, overseeing instead a series of transitional governments that lasted till 1973.

Sept. 12, 1980

The social and political situation in Turkey didn't quite settle after 1973, and once again the military took matters into its hands. Toward the end of 1979, some high-ranking Turkish officers decided to initiate a coup, which was originally scheduled for March but happened months later. On Sept. 12, a coup d' tat was declared on national television, together with the announcement that martial law would be imposed on the country.

The constitution was revoked and substituted with another that was put to a referendum in 1982 and approved by 92% of the voters. With the new constitution in place, elections took place. Kenan Evren, one of the generals who led the coup, remained in power as president for the following seven years.
Feb. 27, 1997

The military took control of the country again with what was famously labeled a "postmodern coup," during the presidency of Suleyman Demirel (who had previously been overthrown as prime minister by the 1971 coup.) Concerned about an increasing presence of political Islam in the country, a group of generals led by #smail Hakk# Karaday# presented the government, led by Necmettin Erbakan, with another series of recommendations-including closing many religious schools, and banning the wearing of headscarves at universities. The generals then forced the prime minister to resign. A temporary government was formed and the military eventually forced the Welfare Party out of power in 1998.

That same year, Erdogan, who was then mayor of Istanbul, was sentenced to jail and banned from politics for five years after publicly reading an Islamist poem. New elections were held in 1999. Erdogan was elected president in 2014.

But the calls the night of the coup attempt were unusual and ongoing. They came after Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked citizens to take to the streets.

How opponents of Turkey's coup used the call to prayer to mobilize protests

"I urge the Turkish people to convene at public squares and airports. I never believed in a power higher than the power of the people," he said in an interview that was strung together using Apple's FaceTime app and broadcast on Al Jazeera.

i thought i remembered that from before

however notice two things that are serious

100 dead 1000 injured (how many of these are military deaths?)

(how long will the military coup attempters be kept in jail)

erogan has not been long in office - though it's possible he planned the coup to stay in longer or gain muslim prayer support for total top down muslim control of non-muslims in Turkey - usa news does not report on turkey enough to know

what's true is muslims have more influence Turkey than the other equally bordering regions and have been steering Turkey toward islam as a nation, giving citizens from boznia serbia et al the boot

that is more new and has been often in the news - that this has been taking place since, say, wwii

(although muslim influence likely was never weak in the area - perhaps their political influence of being a muslim identity nation with islam as law IS NEW)

also what is true is that a coup attempt to protect the people's democracy goes way back to Greek times - that in greek democracy (a true democracy) the military was one of the balance of powers (so they had four lets say, not the 3 that is traditional in usa "indirect democracy")

home of the Greek Orthodox Church if i remember - not ISLAM (though islam has been in turkey as long as any)

Infact in the 2000's there was news of priests of differing religious having a hissy fit - actually coming to blows with two.

End of story - Greek, Georgian, Bulgarian should flock to the Senate of Turkey, claiming misrepresentation of the smaller portion of the population by the larger, and demand that "sit on wallstreet" style muslim tactics and coup de ta displays not be used to weaken their relgion, funding, or political power.

just like america is being attempted to be overthrown by mexico politically and by "sit on wallstreet" tactics (by population overflow), just like al jazeer helped Turkey thwart Turkey in the streets by an %80 muslim loyal population ...

Spain is trying to use politics, war, and population flooding to take back what they lost to England in a long string of wars against england: Gibraltar.

It's not that spain needs the pitiful rock for any reason - other than racial takeover and the need to take back what they lost in their quest to kill whites not really that long ago.

It's the likes of Hillary who've been creating programs that allow blacks to flourish in the cities and take over political power (DC, Atlanta, Philidelphia (ships!), Detroit, so many other). To not just help them survive and improve depsite being financially and educationally behind - but to flourish (head count) and rule (power, and loans).

That is ... the Democrat Party is usa as LONG been using racial inequity to profit at the polls in the USA ... and that has spread now to "sit out on wallstreet" flooding tactics at the usa borders

at the expense of older denizens, at the expense of a country that once didn't care who voted for which party , a country (usa) that once did not fire federal government workers depending on which party was in office

the democrat party in the USA is currently: an islam style flooding tactic and ...

IT WILL HAVE ITS EFFECT IF CONTINUED

Shittest coup ever. To succeed, you have to capture the leader almost immediately, like they did in Egypt. Surround his residence while he's inside and let him know that if he doesn't step down, he'll be dead within 24 hours.

I can believe this was all bullshit. No one stages a coup with a few hundred officers and a few thousand men and doesn't seize the president as the first move.

Risk of immediate upheaval by the populace demanding his release and reinstatement which is exactly what happened with Chavez. Continued morale and operation of other sectors of the security apparatus still loyal to the elected government.

They same thing happened in Egypt. The army set up a 1 mile perimeter around Morsi's residence and wouldn't let the populace enter. Morsi had the support of the population as he was another sharia president that the iman's backed.

When you stage a real coup, you don't really care about the morale and continuing operation of those loyal to the despots. In fact, you want to crush both. The only way to do that is to immediately depose the 'elected government' (<<<< only fools believe Erdogan didn't steal that election but that's Turkey's problem).

If this was a real coup or a coup that was led by someone really trying to overthrow Erdogan, they would have used the Egyptian model. The fact that Erdogan could drive out on the streets, get out of his car and walk around in the middle of all this indicates this was a half-ass effort at best and total bullshit to prop him up at worst.

Morsi had no loyalty of any security officials and he obviously didn't have the popular support Erdogan enjoys and the military was completely united behind the coup.

Partially true. The military was completely behind the coup in Egypt because the leader of the coup was also the leader of the military.

Morsi did have the support of the majority of the people. However, the people of Egypt as a whole are more sophisticated than those Turkey. They have a middle and upper class that doesn't really exist in Turkey outside of the rulers and those connected to them.

This was a new lose for the US and the West. Erdogan supports ISIS. He needed to go. Oh well, maybe next time.
