Best modern Engine

We're in the market for a used car and a few relatives have pointed us to the GM 3800 as one of the most reliable engines. Many Buicks and Olds have them. Just curious if anyone has any recs of other solid engines. How about Transmission?

Thanks

family car? or sports car? Lexus GS 97-04 it uses the 2jz engine, the same engine on the MKIV Supra, it was a bulletproof engine. The Lexus IS 300 uses the Sjz-GE motor which is solid.

I'm partial to the Audi TSFI engine they are using in the new models. It was only out for about 6 months overseas (before it came here) and it was named Engine-of-the-Year. If I recall correctly, the previous 2 engines they produced for the A4 also won the award.

If it has one of these symbols, the engine will last you 300,000 miles with no break downs.

I'd look in to a 4-cyl engine if gas mileage is your concern.

No one gives a damn about your piece of shit Audi.

Thanks, RV.

And no one gives a damn about your generic-looking, bland, re-badged Toyota Camry. Could the Japanese have at least made their luxury segments look somewhat different than their multi-production counterparts?

I guess Lexus drivers like boring.

One of these will be in the shop every two months; the other will go twenty years without a breakdown. Looks and style won't matter when you are on your second and third transmission.

How do you figure? Do you drive an Audi? I haven't had any issues with three I've owned aside from a burnt out tail light.

Besides, who the fuck drives a car to 200k? Are you really that car poor?

Plenty of people drive a car to 200k. They're called Camry, Corolla, IS, ES, LS400, Accord, Maxima, Civic owners.

Not everyone buys a car every time they finish paying off their last finance or lease.

To answer your other question, I have had friends with A4s and A6s that had electrical and transmission problems. If your Audis have been reliable, more power to you, but every Lexus owner I have known keeps them for the long term and they never had a single problem.

Check the reliability ratings, Hyundai and Kia get higher reliability marks than any German brand.

I didn't know that there were so many poor people driving Lexuses.

To each is own, I guess.

Yeah, because keeping a car for more than five years is a mark of poverty. If buying a luxury car that you can't afford every few years helps with your crippling depression, more power to you.

To each his own, I guess.

Yeah, because keeping a car for more than five years shows that you probably get laid about once every five years. It's ok, I'm sure the granny down the street thinks your re-badged Toyota Camry is HOT. If you can't buy a new luxury car with a six-figure cash bonus because your career never really took off, more power to you.

To each his own, I guess.

I believe it, but reliability ratings are vastly overrated. For every broken down Audi, there are 100+ on the road that have no problems.

On that note, the latest JD Powers survey rated Jaguar with the highest reliability of 2008. So that means the Brits went from last to first overnight? I don't believe it.

I think it's all relative to who's got the time and effort to fill out an 8 page survey for the $1 buck they put in the envelope.

VW, yes, but is more distinctive than that of the styling of the Lexus / Camry comparison. That was my original point.

But thanks for paying attention.

True, there has been a lot of talk about certain recent vintages of Camrys which suffer from engine sludge seizure. The result is a dead car...

I hear that the Jaguar engines are one of best new engines out there today. They're not that great on gas, but they're fast and have a distinct growl to them unlike any other engine.

The Bmw m50/s50/m52 in the e36's are very reliable if you maintain the cooling system. The only reason those motors ever die seems to be people don't do preventive maintenance on their cooling systems so they end up leaking coolant and people keep driving them so the head warps or cracks. E36 are fairly cheap too.

The e46 is nice but quite a bit more expensive I don't believe they have cooling system problems but make sure you don't buy an automatic e46 between 1999 and 2000 those transmissions have a tendency to loose reverse.Just get a manual one.

The old e30's are great too very cheap and there M20 motor is very reliable just remember to change the timing belt same with all of the 4 cylinder engines M10 M40 M42. One of my friends has an old e30 318i with over 278k on it.you don't have to worry about the timing belt on the M20's bigger brother the M30 that's in the bigger cars such as the E34 and e24 and alot of other cars.

Chevrolet small-block motors are excellent too especially the good old 350/5.7L and all the other engines based off these engines.

The Ford 302 and 351Windsor and Cleveland and other similar engines

The 7.3 power stroke is awesome people get crazy amounts of miles out of these engines. 400,000+ miles. I know some people who run this engine on filtered transmission fluid.

The old Nissan motors rock any 3.0 and below. I love the z31 and z32 too bad most of the old z31s are rust buckets now.

Some say the best engines are the ones that use dilithium crystals, but I say artificial quantum singularities are the way to go.
