Not sure what the point is here. All countries rely heavily on trade. Always have.
Countries that shut out trade become and die.
Since the start of the US there have been battles over tariffs and trade agreements.

the EUrocrats could not be satisfied with mere trade agreements. if someone says 'we will trade with you IF we can control your borders and write new laws for you' its probably not such a good deal. I mean, unless its the USA telling you that.

It makes me question the mental fortitude of people who are so anti transational- cooperation. Any nation that refuses to engage with the global community gets shafted in some way. The thought of peasant conservatives from the country's hinterlands, who have little knowledge of anything other than the hearth and plow thinking they can formulate sound domestic or foreign policy makes me roar with laughter.
