Should we scrap/alter the constitution?
Posted by: Proposition ()
Date: August 03, 2009 12:44PM

Consider that we've been doing pretty good without it so far. It was made in a different time for different people. In addition, it should include things that modern people overwhelmingly approve; a kind of healthcare guarantee, the legalization of soft drugs, and the banning of handguns. People griped about Bush's and Obamas "shredding" of the constitution, but we have never been safer. Instead of cutting/pasting/amending an old document, lets just start from scratch and make a new constitution incorporating what we've learned in the last few generations and scrapping old, outdated "laws" that don't get followed anyway? Your thoughts?

So you think a paper in 1776 that gives terrorists rights is a great one?

My immediate thought is that you are stupid. After more careful consideration, I think you are incredibly stupid.

There is a mechanism within the constitution that enables it to be changed - it is called Article V.

Yea, but we need to change too much. Why not just start from scratch? We "unofficially" did it during the last decade as an experiment. It worked well, and there was nothing even close to resembling a revolt. So I say we change it to fit our needs for a new milenium!

what do you need to change? the constitution is fairly basic, the federal code is overwhelming.

Gay rights, affirmative action, taxes, animal rights, illegal immigrant legalization, soft drugs, renewable energy, environmental preservation, interstate commerce, gaming...there's a lot we need. Instead of having 10 amendments that would be watered down, lets just start from scratch and do what we want? Besides, "Freedom of Speech" and "militia' are outdated and have no place in a modern society. Adjust them to fit the times.

all of these can be addressed without altering the constitution. in fact, i would not want a consitution to deal with all of these issues - the ratification process would take a century. a constitution should simply create a government that is capable of dealing with all of the issues you have listed - like the one we have now.

So form a new political party and work to have the current ones voted out of office.

The establishment makes it virtually impossible for a 3rd party to win.

Why go through all the troubles to create a new one when we can just keep ignoring the old one?

will be legal but I can kill that bitch. Ooooohhhh! BTW, everybody will have
to attend classes on how to be gay and like it. Everybody will be living

So your answer would be to scrap the one restraint keeping them from having absolute power, and then ask THEM to write up a new ordering document?

That makes a lot of fucking sense. That would be like having the inmates write all the rules at the asylum.

I suspect you don't understand the purpose of a constitution.

All of those things can be and are legislated within the boundaries of the constitution.

You do know there are more than 10 amendments, don't you? If you don't even know that, you are too ignorant to be speaking about the constitution in the first place.

Freedom of speech is outdated? Then do us all a favor and stop fucking talking, you said it yourself, there is no place in a modern society for discourse. Stop enjoying the freedom you say we shouldn't have.

That Obama picture really bothered me - it is actually over the top IMHO. Evidently they are popping up all over L.A.

Obama 'Joker' Poster Causing a Stir in L.A.
http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-obama-posters,0,940643.story

But I have to say, this is stupid too:

Quote

...
Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson is calling the depiction, politically mean spirited and dangerous.

Hutchinson is challenging the group or individual that put up the poster to have the courage and decency to publicly identify themselves.

"Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery," says Hutchinson, "it is mean-spirited and dangerous."

"We have issued a public challenge to the person or group that put up the poster to come forth and publicly tell why they have used this offensive depiction to ridicule President Obama."
...

Freedom of Speech allows this - but it is pictures and depictions like that poster that can move whackjobs to do stupid things.

Freedom of speech should be restricted. It has proven to stop terrorists and keep us safe. Freedom isn't free, and if we have to keep our mouths shut and let the government get the rats out of the rathouse, so be it.

Wire tapping and curtailing freedom of speech gives terrorists less ways to conspire to kill you or bomb me. Freedom of speech was great until the internet...then everything changed. We need to respect the change.

Obama Joker artist unmasked: A fellow Chicagoan

When cryptic posters portraying President Obama as the Joker from "Batman" began popping up around Los Angeles and other cities, the question many asked was, Who is behind the image?

Was it an ultra-conservative grassroots group or a disgruntled street artist going against the grain?

Nope, it turns out, just a 20-year-old college student from Chicago.

Bored during his winter school break, Firas Alkhateeb, a senior history major at the University of Illinois, crafted the picture of Obama with the recognizable clown makeup using Adobe's Photoshop software.

...

Alkhateeb says he wasn't actively trying to cover his tracks, but he did want to lay low. He initially had concerns about ...

... connecting his name with anything critical of the president -- especially living in Chicago, where people are "very, very liberal," he said.

"After Obama was elected, you had all of these people who basically saw him as the second coming of Christ," Alkhateeb said. "From my perspective, there wasn't much substance to him."

"I abstained from voting in November," he wrote in an e-mail. "Living in Illinois, my vote means close to nothing as there was no chance Obama would not win the state." If he had to choose a politician to support, Alkhateeb said, it would be Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

What is absolutely sad in this country is the hysteria surrounding socialism. Leading up to the war in Iraq..anyone speaking against the administration was an enemy of the state. Not even CIA agents were free from retribution if they ar a family member dared to exercise their freedom of speech against the march to war. Meamwhile in all those socialist european countries all sorts of people demonstrated.

I think we brag a little too much and degrade others way too much about our forms of government.
