Iran detains 3 American tourists

So.. I wonder how long it will be before we hear these folks are American spies?

Iran confirms three Americans are being detained
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-iran-americans2-2009aug02,0,5054516.story

I will be pleasantly surprised if Iran acts like other normal human beings and, after determining that all they were doing was hiking, they release them.

Then again - all the facts aren't in. Who knows, maybe they were spies. :)

Maybe I'm old school, but if you're of a certain citizenship or ethnic group and considering going overseas to do some recreation or "investigative journalism". Maybe you steer clear of places that are:

1. Openly hostile towards your own country, race, or ethnic background
2. Known for lack of human rights

If you choose to double down and hit a country that meets both the above criteria, then you're a dumbass and should accept what you get. It's not like it's a big secret that Iran, N. Korea, Somolia, etc. etc. aren't exactly welcoming Americans with open arms.

No doubt. But I am more interested in how Iran will deal with this.

Why is "Somalia" in your list? Certain parts of Somalia is fuckedd up (mainly the south) but if you go to the northern its very peaceful and you will see nice people. Please don't hate on Somalia. Thank you.

It sounds awfully strange that these individuals just so happened to be "Teachers" in the Iranian ally of Syria, and they just so happened to take a "Tourist Hike" in an area full of Weapons Smuggling.

I honestly wouldn't put it past Iran to have kidnapped these individuals from Syria in the first place, and then framing them for a story of immense Political significance (They will accuse them of attempting to interfere in the "Reformation Movement", on behalf of "Agents Of The United States Of America).

I tend to go Occam's razor here and will believe the simplest explanation is the correct one this time the Iranian side.

The evidence at least initially indicates that these three people were up to no good. They were "hiking" in an extremely volatile section of the world either they are total and complete morons which I tend to not believe or they were up to something - be it benign or otherwise I guess time will tell.

A short time ago, it was reported that the three "detained" hikers did in fact wander across the border of their own volition. One of the group stayed behind and received the phone call that they were surrounded by soldiers.

When this story broke, my first thought was “Journalists trying to get a human interest story about the election protesters trials”. Sure enough, as the story unfolds, two of the “hikers/teachers” are aspiring journalists.

As the story continues to unfold, it would not surprise me at all to learn they knew exactly where they were when detained. It’s not like journalists haven’t used the tourist cover in the past.

Not spies Gravis - aspiring journalists. Spies complile data and sell it to use against the Iranians. Aspiring journalists compile data and make it public to the world.

Ahmadinejad is still trying to get past those pesky in-county cell-phone photo journalists who covered the election protests. He sure doesn't want some pesky Americans sneaking into the country and reporting on it too.

Bet its a while before they see the other side of the border. What does Iran have to lose by tossing them in the hoosegow? It's not like Obama will wage war on them.
