Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I am an Uber driver. Picked up a carload of young people who were partying at Mexico Lindo (Bladensburg) on Sunday night (or Monday, 2:00 AM...) driving them back home to D.C.
It was a scene! The place is in a strip mall, and it was flooded with people. There were several busses there, too. And a bunch of police cars. I wasn't inside, but it seemed like just a huge bunch of happy well-behaved people. They were all dressed up in Mexican clothes; I didn't think people actually wore this stuff outside of the movies. It was probably some kind of dress-up celebration night, I guess.
The nice girl who hailed me spoke a few words of English, not much. Her three male friends in the back seat didn't speak any. On the trip, she mentioned that it seemed to be a holiday in this country. She said she had no idea what it was or what is was about.
"Memorial Day. Honor the dead war soldiers." Is what I explained. She seemed thoughtful about this.
But in case you were wondering how disconnected the (probablu illegal) immigrant population around here is: Yes, it's true. They have no idea what Memorial Day is. (And btw she doesn't get Monday off.)
