That good and he should be proud. All slave owners were benevolent because slaves were worth money, well behaved and loyal. "The Underground Railroad" was taking free blacks to the north TO slavery in the south.

Those are some very old and well known Virginian names on that list. I am not surprised if he is related to Robert "King" Carter as well. Of course, most of those notable families had quite a bit of inbreeding going on. 1st Cousin marriages, etc. That would explain a lot.

Slaves over here were taught trades like blacksmithing, cabinet making, basket weaving, cotton and tobacco picking. They were much much better off as skilled laborers over here than in the jungles of Africa. Many slaves lived much better than the poor whites of the region. That is why the poor whites were jealous and hated the slaves. Many plantation owners did free slaves in their will. Some slaves were even paid a small salary , and some even purchased their way to freedom. There were many freed Negroes living here in Virginia before the "Civil War" even. There are lot of myths about slavery thanks to propaganda films such as "12 years a slave" etc.
