Best penetrating lubricant?
Posted by: Restorer ()
Date: July 29, 2009 03:54PM

I am trying to take off the rear bumper of an old truck. I have tried WD40 and Liquid Wrench with no avail. I need to find a lubricant that can penetrate old screws.

Any suggestions?

Try some C-4. Works every time.

I know someone who's an expert in penetrating lubrication. Fisting would be pretty hard if he wasn't.

Check with Spunky, she's got a couple of screws loose.

If WD-40 or Liquid Wrench didn't help, your best bet is probably to apply heat to it, then try again.

I've been looking into this a lot in the last two days, and I agree with the assessment of using heat and then trying.

but

My bolt has the head broken off. I will likely have to drill into the middle of the bolt using a smaller-sized drill-bit, and then use an extractor bit

BTW

Make sure you let liquid wrench set in.... two or three days. Seriously. I have seen it make a huge difference. WD-40 does a shit job... it will get debris off but does not penetrate down. It just ends up making a greasy coat all over the bolt and making your job harder.

Heat up the bolt/nut and put bees wax on it(can usually be found at craft stores). It will melt and work its way into the threads. This has worked great for me in the past :-)

JB 80 I believe its called, or PB Blaster oil in the spray can. The spray has very mild magnetic properties and will use capillary action to go through the rust and should get to the metal eventually. Hint- soak time- then, the 30 dollar hardware store propane torch special

That picture made me laugh. Trying to fit that tube of KY into that little box illustrates why you need KY in the first place.

I like to use it to add a little kick to my homemade BBQ sauce.

WD-40 is probably the best for this job.

A previous poster recommended PB Blaster, which is available at Autozone or Advance Auto Parts. PB Blaster will make WD-40 look like a child's toy when it comes to penetrating rust on an old bolt that needs removing. All that WD-40 is good for is fixing a few small squeaks here at there. I wouldn't use it for anything more.

I found WD40 to be great for most anything. The latest use for it was as a barrier on my metal shovel to keep wet snow from sticking to the blade. Coated the metal with a liberal amount of WD40, let it sit for a minute, and happily shoveled without any snow adhering to the blade.

With all respect to both you and WD-40,
WD is not a penetrating oil. It doesn't suck, it's just not meant for that.
If you follow the post about PB Blast, and let it soak in for a day or two, the bolts will free up.
If they don't, than nothing will have worked. Drill them out.

Yes, he's still on the air with the station "The Edge 105.9". I can't speak to the status of his scrotum "pod" cast, though - as I've never downloaded any of that crap or followed it too closely.

Use some stuff called T-9 made by Boeing, there is no better stuff for getting out stuck screws

You could hack them off with a saw. Or use a peen hammer and chiesel. Use a gas torch to expand the nuts. Liquid lock ease, Silicon spray, sewing machine oil. Lot of things you could try.
