threats on facebook. = police report?

are there any laws that will work in my favor after receiving a threatening message on facebook about my child getting killed?

If its just some random person, I wouldn't worry about it. If they know personal details about you, like where you and your child lives, and they live in your area, I would be concerned.

You have to file a warrant to obtain the person's details from their ISP and then the courts have to prove they wrote it. I know people have been charged over encouraging someone to kill themselves; I don't know how successful the conviction rate is.

Just call the non-emergency number to Fairfax Police and ask them.

Or you can just take down the Facebook "self-worth validation" page and act like a normal person.

Don't cancel the account just because someone threatened you, they win if you do that.

If you know the person, by all means file a report. Threatening someone in an e-mail or message is just as bad as calling someone or writing them a threat.

Does he know that you know who he is? (tip: say it slow)

If not, create a fictious Facebook page and give him a poke right back. Play with him a little bit. Taunting can be fun.

Doesn't one need a Facebook account in order to send another Facebook user a message?

If the threat was specific to you then I'd print it off and take it to your nearest FCPD station and ask to talk to someone about it. If it wasn't specific to you or have no idea who the person is then it's your call, but at a minimum I would file a complaint with Facebook so that user will be banned, or perhaps they'll send it to other authorities.

If you have any reason to believe it is a credible threat then go to the police, show them what you have, and ask them if you should be concerned.

edit to add: I had missed the "same school" part. Is this an adult telling you this, or is this a kid that goes to the same school as your kid's telling you this? I missed the whole bullying possibility, if that is the case then just give the police the info. I don't know if that will make life any easier on your kid and you may have to take it to the school as well if it continues, but the police will likely tell the kid's parents that the shit needs to stop and it's an arrestable offense to threaten someone whatever the medium.

You said they go to the same school. If the online harassment spills over and affects your child's performance in school (i.e., the child avoids going so he/she is not interacting with this person; trouble concentrating, feels sick, etc.) or if the threats are ongoing (bullying), the school also can get involved and possibly discipline. So, I would also show the copy of the threat to the school administrators. At the very least, they should be able to keep these two separated during the school day. See FCPS' Students Responsibilities and Rights for further clarification.

If its an adult, go right to the police and possibly getting a restraining order put against them. That way if they come onto your property, the police won't ask questions, just remove them for you.

If its a kid, I'd contact the parents and inform them that this is your one warning. Inform that you won't hesitate to file a police report and if they go to the same school, contact the principal if it happens again, Make it clear that you won't think twice about their kid having a criminal record and possible suspension/expulsion on their student transcripts which look really good when they apply to college.

You don't know the person well enough to guess their intentions unless its a silly little I'm gonna smack you type threat. The person adult or kid could be seriously disturbed. Even if its some 14 or 15 year old jackass, you don't know if their parents ever monitor their kid, or if dad leaves his firearm out unprotected. Nip it in the bud.

Orrr, on the other hand maybe some of us have used FB to get back in touch with some Old High School friends, or to plan some events. It has its uses.

Ha ha ha! I hate those fucking things. "Bob Johnson just took the quiz How Big of a Douchebag are You? with an answer of total asshat. Are you better than Bob? Take the quiz now."

No thanks.

I've used Facebook to stay in touch with my college friends who don't live close and continue to use it to plan mini reunions at sporting events or bars with those that are nearby, so I find it useful. But I'm also not a teenager or a 20-something so I'm not on there posting every random ass thought that pops into my head. Nobody cares that I'm hungry or that my kid skinned her knee.

The novelty of all this social media stuff will wear off soon enough. It's like we're in the whole "do you have a website?" phase of the dot.com bubble from a decade ago. Back then, if you set up a .com you expected to be a billionaire in six months. Now, everyone expects Facebook and Twitter to change the world.

The truth is, there are very few things in anyone's life that justify it being told to the world, much less in 140 words or less on an hourly basis. Personally, I think it is all a bunch of white noise with the occasional kernel of interesting news that often gets drowned out by the white noise.

For those of us who use Facebook more for it's ability to asct as a custom address book of sorts, it will not lose steam anytime soon. Throughout American history we have strived to keep in touch with people from our pasts, and this stuff makes that a snap.

Back to the original question, I think a death threat is a death threat, regardless of how it is delivered. I would recommend filing a police report and seeing if the cops can get to the bottom of who did it (I'm assuming the idiot is trying to be anonymous). That should put a scare in the little bastard, whoever it is.

NO. read the laws and also commonwealth.

a threat has to be credible (ie, not arguably in jest)

anyway this is rediculous person did not post anything. is fishing for problems in my opinion. fake post.

but anyway no you can't jump on something off the cuff. you sound like a zero tolerance grammar teacher on midol when you reason you need action on a word

anyway. you have one side of the story.

maybe this person stole allot of money or did somethign terrible.

maybe the person they are setting up would not only tell you but treat you better if that's what you look for.

the idea of beleiving the first side of the story you hear: WAY WRONG. dangerous even.

Series premier tonight on UPN,

Eesh has his work cut out for him. William Robert Moreno aka Mr. Misery aka Frank Krow has thrown down the gauntlet. William has moved to eesh's home town and is flaunting his ways right in front of eesh, daring the "Sheriff of FFXU" to try and stop him.

one time, I was fucking this baby up the ass, it was crying so I started shaking it. It stopped crying, I came inside it, put it back in its crib, then climbed out the window. I wonder what ever happened to that baby.

like, can you get in trouble in any way for just buying a copy of Tiger Beat? If you were a grown man let's say, and you were slightly overweight and had a beard and large glasses and you look a little funny, and you just went into a Walgreens and bought nothing but a copy of Tiger Beat....and maybe also a box of condoms. Could you get arrested based solely on your purchase? Is that probable cause or something? Or if you bought a Kidz Bop CD. Anything like that. If a grown man bought something of that sort, and he looked a little ugly and odd maybe, could he hypothetically get arrested for that?

is it illegal for a grown man to attempt to have a serious conversation with a kindergarten child about politics or religion, if they are not related and just happen to be sitting next to each other on a park bench or something? Is it really illegal?

can a grown man and a little girl, unrelated and strangers to each other, have dinner together at a fancy restaurant? Legally? Let's say they meet outside the gym or something and decide to have dinner together, and that's it. That is the extent of the interaction. Is it illegal?
