What do you set your thermostat to?

What temperature do you set your thermostat to? Where is the best balance between comfort and not spending a fortune on utility bills?

If you have a roomate, I would do 72-74 and get a fan for your room. Fans dont consume that much energy and will keep you comfortable.

The answer depends on your house and how well it is insulated. If you feel you are paying too much now, adjust by three degrees and see if you can live with it. Or get a programmable thermostat and set different temperatures for different times of the day.

edit to add: 72-74? I usually have mine set 78-80 in the summer.

We actually keep our air conditioning completely off quite a bit. You get acclimated to it and it isn't as uncomfortable as you might think. Keep a fan going and open the doors and windows as much as you can. On really uncomfortable days we turn it back on. Of course, Clifton is probably 5 degrees cooler than most places in Fairfax County so it's probably a litle easier there.

I did that last year CliftonResident and you're right its not that bad. However, that can create havoc with appliances. My fridge went on the fritz at least twice last summer and i lost quite a bit of food.

This year I have kept my thermostate at 80 degress. My house is 2200sqft, new windows/roof and all brick. My power bill is about $75/mo. It is very comfortable to be in almost all day in jeans and t-shirt. The only caveat is that it does get little incomfortable in the afternoon.

I set mine around 75. I live in an apartment with no ceiling fans. I think if I had fans I could deal with 78-80, but without it's too much.

Clifton is a shitload more intelligent than Fairfax in general. Those green things that grow and have leaves and block and absorb the suns energy, and keep the ground cool, you know trees????? And Fairfax wondered why it had rolling black outs in the 80s 90s and early 2000

As a fat guy, I kick it between 72-76. It depends on how humid my house is... if I had a dehumidifier I might kick the 'stat up a few notches.

I keep it around 75 during the day and crank it down a bit at night. Otherwise, nobody can sleep because the upstairs is like a furnace.

What I can't stand are public places. They all have the air so fucking cold. And nobody I know has the balls to eat outside in the shade at lunchtime. Everyone wants to freeze their asses off indoors.

Dude, you need a separate zone for the upstairs.

I have three zones here at casa del tubby. The equipment costs more (basically, I had to buy 3 separate A/C systems) but it actually saves juice.

But, like the other guy said, I'm a fat-ass, so I crank the thermostat down to where I'm comfortable, and I don't give a shit what it costs. My neighbor says I could hang beef in my house...LOL

True. Some of my neighbors have multiple units. I'm too lazy to go that route.

74 in the summer, usually 70 or so in the winter. My place keeps its heat (only one side exposed) though so I end up running the AC way more than I ever do the heat.

Dude- Have an attic exhaust fan installed. I swear on my kids lives it's worth it. My house used to be 10 degrees hotter upstairs every summer (I actually did a week long study using temperature monitoring devices). I had an attic fan installed this year for $575 and my house is the same temp all the time and my power bill is lower because the damn AC isn't running all the time

I leave it at about 82 when I'm gone and about 78 when I'm home. I actually try to leave the house opened up as much as possible. 85 is when I close things up.

Wow - you guys like it warm. We keep ours at 70-72. Typical electric bill (averaged over the whole year) is around $130. We also have a portable air conditioner in the bedroom (top floor of T/H) to keep it at ~70 at night in the summer.

Shit, that sounds like my moms house. It's a fucking meat locker. Of course she's experiencing menopause and having hot flashes. She has a supplemental window unit in her bedroom. It has to be about 60 degrees in there. Lol.

at my old apartment the air conditioning got broken ON. they had to wait for 2 weeks for a part to fix it and it was about 45 degrees, in the middle of summer. We were wearing winter coats and could see our breath in the house. we had a space heater in the bathroom becuase i practically froze when i got out of the shower. best summer ever.

75-76 during the day, 73 at night. Runs about $130 a month with a new variable speed unit and a 2200 sf house.

I have an attic fan also, as well as ceiling fans in each room. I turn on the AC about a total of 2 weeks during the summer, and then I set it at 78.

With ceiling fans and an attic fan, my 1700sf 3-level TH electric bill averages $55 a month.

You say they lack the "balls" to eat outside in the Heat, but do you have the "Balls" to walk outside and eat some ice cream when it's 30 Degrees?

72 during the day, 69 when we go to bed. It's worth it. I hate going in houses where they keep it at 75 or higher. It's too darn hot! Makes them look cheap, inviting people over then making them sit there and sweat.

I didn't think that it took balls to do that.

I've bought a few good humor products from a 7-11 or some other store in the winter, because it looked appetizing.

Toasted Almond and ice cream sandwiches can fill me up just right in the middle of the workday, no matter what the temperature is outside. And I eat them on the walk back to my office, even if it is 19 degrees outside. (it works better in colder temps, when it is 99 degrees in the shade, most of it melts in my hand)

73, but I’m always either too hot or too cold. I guess the excessive narcotic abuse makes it difficult for me to regulate my own body temp:)

My wife (bless her) drops the temp way down low and uses a fan in the bedroom, then gets under lots of covers and sits on a heating pad, and says its too hot.

It's funny how people assume the only motivation for doing anything must be about money. We have plenty of money to run our air conditioning at whatever temperature we want, we choose to keep it mostly off for other reasons: it's less wasteful, better for the environment and it can be more comfortable. I'm not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

THAT's what I'm talking about! I definitely feel you on that.

I really hate Heat myself. I've gone through years where I don't mind it, and others where I simply can't stand it anymore. I've never had a problem with the Cold though, although an ideal day would be Sunny, and maybe in the Lower 60's.

We keep ours at 76. The thermostat is upstairs where the bedrooms are, and that keeps the upstairs comfortable for sleeping and the downstairs nice and cool. I set it to 80 if we will be gone for the weekend (it's harder and more expensive to cool down a very hot house than to pay for electricity to leave it warmish).

We often turn the ac off during the day so the cats can enjoy the fresh air. The beginning of the summer was so mild that we often just relied on opening windows. But when we're using the heat pump it is usually set to 72.

We hired an energy inspector few years ago and it was worth every penny. Based on his recommendations, we replaced the old windows that were leaking, added insalation to the attic and added the attic fans. We spend about $180-200 during the hotest months and we run it at 74-75 during the day and 70-71 at night. I do think that even for an average size house like ours it would be great to have two zones...

i sure hope so because it will take 40+ years to break even with the cost of the windows as compared to the electrical cost.

Holy crap! Do you enjoy icicles on your nipples?

I keep it set to 78 in the summer, and 72 in the winter. If it's too cold, my heat pump can't make it that warm. Lesson Learned: Sometimes the friends and family discount is not worth it.
