VA Beach vs Ocean City 3 day weekend
Posted by: vacation ()
Date: July 27, 2009 09:27AM

hi all, i am going to be taking a long weekend maybe 3-4 days to either VA Beach, OC, or Atlantic City.

Please let me know which you would choose first and why?
maybe recommend hotels
or restaurants/things to do

Thanks

Here's the logic I use:

VA beach, to me, appears cleaner and more family friendly, so it's good for small kids.

OC is good for kids who are old enough to go off by themselves for a few hours. It's seedier and more white trash, though.

AC is good if you want to gamble and nothing else.

Forget them all. It's not worth the drive for only 3 days.

You might as well try St. Michaels or Annapolis and rent a sailboat.

I would suggest Bethany Beach. You can then hit OC (better boardwalk and rides for the kids) and Rehoboth (better restaurants).

I like Virginia Beach okay, but prefer the Delaware Shore.

Go to Lake Anna and stay on the "warm" side of the lake. At least you know why the water is warm.

I would go with Va Beach, mainly for traffic reasons. There are a ton of good beaches in the Va Beach area. The strip is clean and new. You could also hit Busch Gardens one day. http://www.vbfun.com/visitors/default.aspx

Go North of the strip there are some cool beaches. Lots of shore parks.

AC is a dump. Don't waste your time driving three/four hours.

I drove to nags head, which you must basically travel to on the same route as VA beach. The traffic last Saturday in the middle of the afternoon on 64 was amongst the worst I have ever seen, and I am a 30 year Nova resident, so that speaks a little to some of the awful traffic I have witnessed.

I'd lean south toward the OBX instead.

If you are heading to VA Beach or the Outer Banks on the weekend between Memorial and Labor Day, a good route to take is 17 from Fredericksburg down to 64. You hit some stoplights toward the southern end, but the traffic is extremely light most of the way, and it's a pretty stress free drive.

95 and 64 are a nightmare Saturday and Sunday and usually are just pure shit to drive.

Taking 17 South from 66 isn't too bad either.

Hell, if you are feeling adventurous, drive over to 301 in Maryland, take that to 17 south. Much less stressful driving. Not necessarily faster, but less traffic.

I've driven back from OBX on 17. It's a nice relaxing drive (you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere). Definitely a part of VA that is seldom visited.

It can be sort of slow going around Yorktown cuz of all the traffic lights.

That's the best route to take. The Interstate through the "Historic Triangle," or whatever they call it, is a fucking nightmare.

Nice beach at OC, and if you want more secluded, Assateague Island is right there. 2.5 mile boardwalk is really great if you can look past the offensive t-shirt shops on the inlet end. But that is slowly turning around too, and Fishers/Thrashers/ferris wheel etc. still make the inlet a place to visit. Lots to do for kids - amusement parks, boat rides. They can ride their bikes on the boardwalk in the morning. Adults can charter fishing, jetskis, parasailing, etc. Many pretty good restaurants there-stay away from buffets- and many restaurants have live music. Nightlife is pretty good too. It's an easy drive from anywhere in the DC area, especially if you have the EZPass to help you get across the Bay Bridge.

GENEVIEVE I want you to carefully read and re-read bagOdonuts post, and then never second-guess me on a route again.

My favorite part is driving by "Horne's" restaurant.
