While I give little consideration to these conspiracy theorists, I was on a conference call with the Hawaii Dept of Records about 5 years ago. The project was to digitize 100s of thousands of historical paper documents related to the state payroll.

Maybe President Obama's "original paper certificate was scanned and digitized during a similar project? It would not surprise me that, if this story has ANY truthfulness to it, that the certificate was scanned and digitized and archived and paper records were destroyed with 1000s of others.

Sometimes, key details are left out these articles.

Oh during the conference call I laughed when one of the potential vendors asked if the documents were in English or Hawaiian.

This birth certificate thing is so unproductive. Big waste of time.

I'm a conservative and see absolutely no value in pursuing this. Let it drop. There is nothing to be gained.

My question is, in all of Lou Dobbs research on this subject, has he or his staff bothered to ask if any other states have logged all birth certificates electronically and disposed of the originals? I have a feeling many, if not most states, have done this.

Put them in a box deep in some warehouse, yes, but toss them or shred them? Doubtful. Birth certificates are too important a document to toss IMHO. And in all seriousness, even if they did, the likelihood is it would require an exact image of the document be stored, so they could either produce or see a visual of the exact document even if they did not have it in hand. They would likely consider any such document a "vital record" and that paper copy would be kept in existence at all costs.

Well, it could be that the states contracted out; ie, they hired Iron Mountain, for example, to scan their documents into a computer database. IM destroys the originals.

Yeah but, after the fires in the past that destroyed so many critical documents I think most States have enacted policies that require them to keep all vital records for something like 75 years after death at a minimum. You would have relatives making claims, things like that - a birth certificate would not be subject to shredding - unlike the Governor's meeting notes, or perhaps a letter from a concerned constituent to the Governor.

Seems to me that the Texas Air National Guard would have been required to keep records from the 1960s and 70s, but that didn't happen, either.

They note Birth Certificate retention is permanent. Few folks in IT today will tell you any form of electronic formatted retention would be considered as "permanent" - you would want the original document stored if it was available.

I was just saying that could be a reason. I do not know what Hawaii did with Birth records, if they did anything at all with them. I just know they were digitizing 100,00s of state payroll records and then most were destroyed. The islands, surprisingly have little storage space.

Much like his lamented (non) apology - if the records exist, it seems like the easiest way to defuse this would be for Obama to ask Hawaii to make copies of the records for him, and have Gibbs show the reporters the documents. That would be by far, the easiest way to make this all go away. With all the folks he has working for him, this cannot be a hard request, or a time consuming one. They have made a bigger mountain out of this issue every time they say the documents exist.

I don't give the "birthers" any credit at all, but it seems to be more and more of a distraction regardless how many times some third party says they have seen them, and yet no one in the public does.

I think it's a great strategy NOT to show the documents, and I commend the Obama administration for letting this tired issue linger like a foul odor. That document you keep posting is NOT a birth certificate. It is a document that says a birth certificate is available on file. The Certifaction of Live Birth you keep posting is probably not even good enough to satisfy the requirements to get a US Passport. My guess is that Obama lost his original birth certificate and doesn't want to admit it because it would only add fuel to the fire. The other option is that he actually likes this story being out there. He can maintain that his critics are nutjobs and point to the birthers as prime examples. Here's the problem with your assumptions. Most of us out here really don't give a shit. His policies are what is screwing him up now, and little additional BS stuff like this gets to be a piling on effect from the media.

Like Obama, I was born in an offshoot colony of the US not really recognized as part of the United States by Republicans. I was born in Washington, DC. I went to DC Vital Records to get my birth certificate when I needed a passport a few years ago.

My "Certificate of Live Birth" had the Drs and some administrators signature. The Vital Records people gave it a raised seal after they printed it off of microfilm.

It was "good enough" to get a passport and later "Good enough" to get a Virginia drivers license replacement.
