Good Podcasts
Date: July 23, 2009 12:51PM

Since local radio is now impossible to listen to, I wanted to see if folks could recommend some good podcasts to download. I am partial to the Adam Carolla Podcast. If you know of any others that are similar in theme, please let me know.

Thanks.

Kendall is a pretty gay name. Were your parents stuck between Lance, Julian, Bruce, or Kendall?

Nice recovery. Don't worry, I can keep a secret. I won't tell what other forum it came from.

Shh, don't worry. Like I said, I can keep a secret. I thought you wanted the info out there, then you edited it. Obviously an unintentional release on your part. No big deal. Let's just pretend it didn't happen.

Not really sure what you are talking about, but "whatever."

Thanks, I guess.

No problem. ;) (that's not a gay wink but more like "hey, don't worry, bro. I got you covered" kind of wink)

Dood, get Sirius. It is worth it. Stern is amazing with reduced commercials.

Yeah, just be aware that Stern broadcasts live only four days a week and takes fourteen weeks of vacation a year, during which you'll hear repeats and other kind sof specials. Not saying there is anything wrong with whatever deal he got, but you should be aware of that before you buy in.

152 shows per year * 5 years = 760 shows

$500M / 760 = ~%658k per show, or $131K per broadcast hour (show is scheduled from 6a-11a, 5 hour show). Not a bad deal.

Or is it twelve weeks he has off per year? That would come to

($500M / (160 * 5)) / 5 = $125K per broadcast hour, again not shabby.

I thought Stern's deal was in stock. Not sure how much of that $500 million he actually saw (though I am sure he isn't hurting for money).

This CNN piece seems to say he got $200M in stock, but that was on top of the $500M due to hitting subscriber targets. I'm sure stock was a component of the $500M, I hope for his sake not much of it as I think Sirius was around $7 when the deal was announced and has since fallen to about fifty cents (a bounce up form the dime it was at).

http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/26/technology/moritz_sirius.fortune/index.htm

"One obvious target: Howard Stern's $500 million package, which doesn't include the roughly $200 million in Sirius stock he's received for meeting subscriber targets."

edit to add: which was still a great deal for Sirius. He has easily added ten million subscribers to satellite radio, and 10 million subscribers, assuming a single radio at $156/yr in subscription revenue is over $1.5B in revenue per year.

Howard Stern uncensored, even at 4 days per week and maybe 40 weeks a year is worth every penny of the $12.95/mo fee. And the amount of subscribers he was able to bring to Sirius makes him worth every penny they spent.

I am a fan of Howard, but not a great fan of Sirius the company. After promising up and down that prices would not be raised and in fact may decline, your $12.95/mo fee has to be corrected to $14.95/mo or thereabouts because they are adding $2 to primary radios per month to make up for what they are claiming are royalties to RIAA. Not sure if they are still advertising $12.95/mo, but if they are then they aren't giving the true monthly fee.

Howard was given, over a year, nealry 500 million in sirius stock. He sold it as soon as he got it.

My fave podscasts
Real Time with Bill Maher (audio only, but I am too cheap to get HBO)
Friday Night Comedy on BBC4 - OMG is this funny and relevant
Skepticality - for us that or not spoon fed our opinions
Friday New Roundup with Diane Rehm
Scam School - pretty interesting!

And, I do hate to admit it - but I listen to the Iceberg channel on Sirius. The music is stuff I never heard before and most is realy good.

This American Life is often very good radio.

Years ago I used to listen to Joe Frank, and he did some fantastic stuff. He has a webpage, and the last I checked, not much on there is free; also I don't know if his current material maintains his former high standard.

I don't enjoy Dylan's show. His repartee and delivery sounds canned, for the most part - like he's reading someone else's copy, not particularly well.

The Internet Monk's podcast is pretty good if you're into that sort of thing, which you're probably not.
