If you don't want to do it, do it poorly, and then you'll get bonus points every time you offer to do it.
That's a timeless thing my father taught me. He knew that my mother played the same game with him, but he also knew it worked to maintain harmony.
Sure, a wife could help with changing a carburetor, if nobody else was around to help, if only to hand tools and parts to you, but it would actually increase the time it took to change the carburetor.
But did the wife feign ignorance because it wasn't something she wanted to do? And did you feign incompetence in washing dishes so you wouldn't have to do it again?
That's the beauty of it. Playing off of the stereotypes.
BUT, I really think we should get to a point where the wife is able to change a spare tire, paint the house, hunt and field dress some game, and make the sandwich and do it all while barefoot and pregnant.
They just want equality, don't they? We just want to do less, don't we?
If we can get to that point, we'll all be happy.
