I've known quite a few gay men in my life, starting in graduate school where some became friends. I've worked with gay men and women, some of whose have also become friends. We're not talking about an exotic species here; about one in ten people are gay. You've also met a lot of gay people - you just don't realize it. You probably think gay guys prance around in short shorts saying 'Hey, fellas!'. Some do, most don't. I've known gay guys that you would never in a million years realize are gay. Some are actually quite 'macho' (by nature - not as a coverup).

I agree completely with your stance on hate crimes. I've never understood how a crime can be worse if it's pointed at a particular group. Isn't murder still bad if you murder someone without hate in your heart? How can it be worse for one dead person than another?
