what is the difference between registering a domain name and actually buying one?

i am trying to register a domain, but i do not understand the difference between registering one and buying one? if i register one can i lose it after the period is up or do i have first refusal to renew it?

There is no buying a domain name. You could register one and pay the renewal fees up-front for a hundred years and kind of "buy" it that way I guess.

You can keep it as long as you renew it. If you don't renew it then someone else can register it and you are SOL. Check out meadeskelton.com as an example... he didn't pay in time and now he has to register meadeskelton.org .

Its the same shit. You sound like a nub i would buy a shared hosting plan and most of them give you 1 or 2 free domains to register.
