I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not the Verizon Center has a special waiting room for parents of youths attending a show. The Jonas Brothers are in town tomorrow night and my wife is taking our daughter and a friend to the concert. She does not have a ticket for the concert herself and will have to wait while the show is on. Does anyone know if they have a waiting room for parents at events like this? Thanks.

It's called a sports bar/restaurant.

There's a bowling alley, Lucky Strike in the same complex. Just go there have a drink (alcoholic or not), maybe a burger, and bowl for a while.

I think there's also a movie theater in the same complex or right next door.

There's lots to do down there besides sitting in some boring "parent's waiting room".

Are you crazy???? Letting children go to a concert of any kind without proper adult supervision is insane!!! Even worse... Jonas Brothers!?!?! You should have your parenting license taken away!

Do you have any idea what goes on in a Jonas Brothers concert? No! I am sure you have no idea at all! It is not like back "in your time" when the night would be filled with music, a few joints, and a bit of heavy petting... No! Nothing like that at all....

As I can tell that there is no talking (or typing) you out of this insanity... I would recommend Fado's. It is a nice place. Hope your wife has a good time.

Parents today have this mistaken belief that cell phones are like electronic leashes that they can use to track their kids anywhere. I have news for you. Predators know how to throw a fucking phone away!

Next time, you or your wife need to buy a ticket and sit through this shit.

under normal circumstances you can't "just bowl" at lucky strike, the place is always packed (at night) and at least some of the time takes reservations.

the drinks there are HORRIBLY overpriced, btw.

I've only been there during a work day, so I didn't realize it was busy at night. Though I guess it's just like Bufallo Billiards, so I should have known.

Anyway, there are plenty of things to do down there to kill time waiting for the kids.

She is almost 15. Should I keep her locked in her room forever?

At a previous job, I used to be able to talk my boss into walking over for lunch, and we'd end up bowling for 2 or 3 hours.

Never had to wait. Maybe if they did lower the price during work hours, they might have more than 2 or 3 lanes busy during the day. Downtown DC is full of office workers doing everything BUT working -- going for walks, going to the movies, taking long lunches, going shopping, getting haircuts, going to a museum, etc. Lucky Strike could be making more money if they targetted the slacker segment of the workforce.

theres a difference between keeping her locked up and letting her walk around unsupervised in a major city and/or concert event. Theres some fucked up people in this world... its not your daughter that you shouldnt be trusting, its society.

yeah, there are also people that want to kill as many americans/infidels as they can but it shouldnt mean you never go outside or be wearing body armor at all times. however, with the fcpd around, you may want to consider wearing the body armor.

at 15, you can fend for yourself for a couple hours.

I wouldn't be so sure, in the age of the stage managing, helicopter parent.

But you are right, nonetheless. In the natural world, absent frantic parenting, anyone over about 13 years of age is pretty well geared to interact with the world without being abducted. Corrupted is another worry, but if they don't get corrupted at a young age, they'll certainly get corrupted by the time they get to college, or if they are really slow learners, in their 30's.

im talking about realistic threats. Is there a chance there will be a terrorist attack on the US again, of coarse, but that isnt nearly the same chance as having your 15 year old daughter alone in one of the cities with the highest murder rates.

DC is safe, unless you drop your teenager off in a neighborhood with high drug activity.

If the address has a "NW" at the end of it, you can feel pretty safe dropping your teenage daughter off and letting her spend an afternoon or evening roaming around.

I used to go down to DC when I was a teenager, when DC really was the "murder capital" in the 80's, and never had anything happen to me. Well there was that one time I was murdered by crack addicts, but it turns out that was just some episode of a crime TV show that I turned into a nightmare.

Hmm. What occurs in the years between 2 and 15 will determine whether I trust my daughter to go into Verizon Center for a Jonas Brothers concert at age 15, or hell, even trust her to stay at home by herself whilst her mother and I enjoy a night out.

But if the daughter and a friend have shown themselves to be reasonably mature/trustworthy, then who are we to question the OP's assessment of his own children?

As for strangers doing harm, aren't there like 100 or so minors a year abducted by complete strangers? Living in utter fear of that happening is like living in fear of getting hit by a meteor. The odds of the daughter/friend ditching the concert to enjoy some of the bars at F Street are probably higher (or even try heroin, if the OP's daughter goes to Westfield or South Lakes.) Ironically, I'm going to guess the odds of Bad Stuff Happening would be greater if the girls ditched the concert to go partying in DC for an evening.

The reaction of parents to mid-level issues (e.g. some guy flashing her, etc.) will have a lot to do with how well kids handle that level of thing. They can't be ignored, but parents running around going crazy can do more harm than the original wrong.

Agreed. My friends and I used to metro down to Georgetown all the time when we were 13. There is nothing wrong with going to a concert -- my mom dropped us off at many. Parents have to be able to trust their parenting. There are super responsible kids who can be trusted, and raging little assholes who will burn down a building if left alone for two minutes. Most kids are mature enough at 15 to go to a concert.

The 15-year-old went back stage and gave head to three black roadies. She never got to see the Jonas Brothers, though. Funny how that worked out.
