Afghanistan - Obama's Vietnam
Posted by: Yadda Yadda ()

Afghanistan is Obama's Vietnam. His troop escalation is increasing troop death. No reporting on death numbers though. The complicity of the news media keeps the bad news at bay but the parallels to Vietnam are too may. Indigenous fighters, difficult terrain, guerilla warfare.

The US will eventually get bogged down there.

If anything, Afghanistan will be Obama's Afghanistan. The area is notorious for quagmires. Just ask the Soviets and the British.

The difference between the Soviet and British presence in Afghanistan and the current U.S. presence is that we aren't trying to hold the country and make it an American colony. Our goal is to kill as many Al Qaeda as possible. I believe that if we get Bin Laden and Al Zawahiri, Obama will declare victory and the U.S. will leave.

It is "Obama's Vietnam" as much as Vietnam was Nixon's war. Being saddled with a war upon taking office is not the same as choosing to embark on that war.

What's funny is that the parallels to Vietnam with the Iraq war has been completely ignored and nobody seems to ever want to discuss it. Anyone who does want to discuss it is shut down immediately.

Not to mention, if we hadn't removed entire divisions (10th Mountain, 101st Airborne, 25th ID, etc) from the fight in Afghanistan, less than 18 months into the fight, to go after big bad Saddam and his WMD and ties to al qaeda (whom we were successfully fighting in Afghanistan), we could possibly already have been done with Afghanistan.

We diverted our resources and attention and focus from a fight we were winning, and got ourselves involved in another Vietnam, in Iraq, which meant we needed to keep our skeleton force in Afghanistan doing a slow burn fight against asymmetrical forces who would never go away. Many experts say that the presence of foreign forces in a land perpetuates insurgencies. By staying in Afghanistan without finishing the job (because Iraq was apparently a more urgent task for Halliburton and KBR), we only ensured that it remained a problem.

Iraq?

Iraq? Oh yeah, we chose to "surge" and pay off both sides of the civil war, and now we are "out of the cities". Fine. We won. Let's get the fuck out.

As far as Afghanistan, we haven't done that yet. We need to. We need to find our graceful exit. We need to just get the fuck out.

But to blame Obama for yet another of Georgie's mistakes is disingenuous and stupid.

To be honest, I've been waiting for yet another indictment against Obama, and this one could really gain traction -- New Orleans is still not 100% rebuilt! What the fuck is up with Obama? He's been in office for 6 months now, and he hasn't fixed New Orleans, the levees are still not up to Category 5 strengths, there are entire neighborhoods waiting to be rebuilt. How come this damn black guy can't fix New Orleans??? It's his own people, after all! That damn kenyan muslim lied to us all!

A perfect example of what a person with nothing intelligent to say does...finds someone else's cartoon art to say nothing.

Thurston...you raise some very valid points. I cant wait to see what the republican candidate in 2012 will offer as non-interventionist foreign policy. However, what I see is a party trying to push Obama into making "line in the sand" statements about Iran....Georgia...China. Republicans are too anxious to use our military might...or at least to ratttle the swords of our warriors, soldiers, sailors and airmen.
