I decided to do a low mileage lease on a sports car for a couple years, just to keep in the garage except for weekends and vacations. I have test driven Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Challenger, Cadillac CTS-V. The corvette looks so cheap and shitty that I didn't even get in it. I will say that of all of them the Caddi sucked the least. Looks like I'm stuck with BMW.

It has been my experience that the US auto industry is still operating under the premise that Americans will only use a car for about two years, trade in, and buy the new model because of some minor change to function or finish. As a result, the quality tends to be poor when compared to many foreign makes which are designed to last longer. GM, particularly, Chevrolet, is probably the worst. Chevys are built with ver low stress tolerance requirements and tend to rattle loose within a few years.

I took a 24hr test drive on a Tesla S. It was quite the experience, took it on skyline drive and enjoyed the peace and quiet as well as the handling. You should try it OP.

The American car interiors may not be as nice as the Germans. But the reliability is far better than any BMW or German car. Just pop the hood of any F series BMW, it's all plastic. Oil pan, water pump, valve covers, all plastic.

The Corvette is actually a pretty decent car now, finally. As was previously pointed out, the other cars you mentioned (Camaro, Challenger, etc.) are not even sports cars. Why didn't you consider a Lotus or Porsche?

American sports car you say? Is it really junk? All these machines need maintenance, upkeep and even a level of customization to get them to the owners personal tastes. The Corvette, Chevy, The Viper, Mopar and the Ford GT40 I would consider American sports cars. You can't expect cars like these to come off the showroom floor exactly the way the buyer wants them and there is an entire industry devoted to getting them "perfect". The same can be expected from the foreign manufacturers. When leasing a car one can only do so much to get it tweaked to the drivers expectations and performance will suffer. Of course the answer is to buy these cars and flip them when you want to try something else.
Me, I'm a Mopar guy for fast. Ford for trucks. I buy and keep so I tweak as desired. There are so many options available in todays after market that the choices are limitless. Good luck with your search OP just remember to temper your expectations with the fact that you are "renting" rather than buying out right.

AM General (was Willy's Overland that made Jeeps beginning WWII) sold off the civilian side of their Hummer business. Then they made the H1 and H2's for GM.
I can certainly see GM maneuvering around AM General being a completely different company but specs are specs and theirs are patented top secret squirrel stuff.

We have a '95 Taurus, '04 Wrangler, a new dodge van, a newer Honda accord, and a 32 year old Honda motorcycle. All fully functional, American cars included. Had a '63 Chevy Corvair, looked and ran great sold that, as well as a few other German, Japanese and American cars over the years. All had assorted issues at one time or another. None really better than the rest. That said, my Audis and Volkswagens were about the best handling cars I've had...

BELOW: The '65 Sport Fury above was typical of Plymouth Muscle Cars in the early 60s. Not much style, but loads of power. Mopar in general didn't have a lot of good-looking designs back then. But they would cram a huge engine in, maybe a 413 or a 426 Max Wedge, and they were deemed muscle cars.

Nothing wrong with buying an American car as long as you understand that it will cost you much more aggravation and money if you keep it for a long time. If you drive if for three years then sell or trade it then it should be fine.
If you are concerned about cost than the best bet is to go with Honda or Toyota and try to keep it on the road for 250,000 miles which is not difficult unless you wreck it.
I have a Lexus which is a blinged up toyota that has 190,000 miles and has never had a mechanical failure, just maintenance stuff like battery, tires, brakes and a muffler. No way I could have done that with an American car.

My 1999 Mercedes e320 is the most reliable car I have ever owned - almost no mechanical issues with 200000. That is why those were used as cabs in europe. I drove a 1989 Honda Accord to 225000 with almost no mechanicals. My Volvo's have been more work but not horrible. My 1993 Town Car was a dream mechanically too.
Most cars today are 100x than the shit we made in the 60's-80's those were pure feces.

My 2003 GMC Yukon Denali has 316,000 on it. It gets driven everyday. Of course many suspension parts have been replaced and normal wear and tear but so far so good.
Also have a 1997 Dodge pickup with 205,000 miles. It's a work horse.
My daily driver though is a YUGO. That thing is built like a tank and will last forever.

Any car is fine as long as there are no fatal flaws in design. My dads subaru was ok except that a flaw in the electrical/cooling system would charge the coolant and cause the head gasket to erode. If you didnt keep your battery terminals perfectly clean you would be replacing your engine in 10 years - what a piece of shit.

I was suprised to see that the top 3 finishers in yesterday NASCAR race were Toyotas. Toyota ia as American as apple pie!

I bought a chevy cruze new in late 2014, it went back to the dealer 22 times in the first year, 5 of those times by tow truck. They gave me a new cruze after the 22nd time it broke down and the new one would not start the first time I tried to use it. I got my money back and bought a Honda. The Honda has been flawless. American cars do suck bad.

The new Buick's have surprisingly good reliability for an American car. I would like to buy one but I hate to support unions and GM after they tried to cover up that ignition switch problem and killed or maimed all those people. Some of the GM victims burned alive.

I bought a new honda accord in 2012, and it went to the dealer 27 times for electrical issues, broken AC, and a failed transmission. All within 1 1/2 years. I had to fight the dealer and honda to get reimburst for all the expenses, lost time at work, tow truck bills etc. I never did recoup all of it. I finally bought a Chevy Malibu and wow, this car has more class than any import I've ever been in. Plus has been flawless for 3 years and 89,000 so far!
