"TIMBERLAKE" Oakton, Virginia

TIMBERLAKE, OAKTON VIRGINIA I worked as the head life guard at Timberlake from 1980 to 1990. I started at the age of 20 and in 1990 I turned 30. That was when the troubles started, and the lake would be bulldozed soon after. There were 5 people who drowned during those ten years, but the last one did us in. It would probably still be operating today by one of Mr.Youngs sons, or grandchildren, had it not been for insurance rates sky rocketing on the place. Families, singles, couples, groups up to about 2,000 could bring there own beer, or get a keg from the lake. The life guards and the Timberlake staff would hang around even when not on the clock, it was that kinda place. I miss it very much. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. Arizona66

At the deepest end it was 35-40 ft. Too deep for me to dive, but I heard people had done it.

It was 40' deep at the dam. I never tried to grab mud off the bottom, I was to scared, but I heard people did it.

South Lakes students use to sneak in after hours and have kegs parties. Crazy high school skinny dipping days. Way too much fun!

*Bump*

@Arizona66: I know Timberlake is now a full-fledged neighborhood, I've driven through there and see the two lakes still exist. What do you mean by 'bulldozed'?

Also, which of the lakes did the drownings take place?

Also- does anyone have any pictures they can share from when the lake was open to the public? The larger lake is beautiful and must've been real fun back in the day.

@PP: Timberlake is located off Vale Rd., going towards West Ox Road.

@Arizona66 Sounds like you were there the summer I worked there then! I was the really tall, skinny redheaded 16 year old!
