ATTN: Drivers who cruise in left lane
Posted by: Furfur ()
Date: June 19, 2009 09:44PM

I do a lot of driving on I-95, and despite the signs that state "Slower traffic keep right" you still have people that think its Driving Miss Daisy in the left lane.

1. Left lane is for passing not cruising.

2. It is an actual traffic infraction to block an overtaking vehicle.

3. Is is not your job to enforce the speed limit; State troopers will catch the speeders.

4. If you do 60-65 MPH in the left lane, and then see someone passing you, do not speed up to catch them and then slow down again.

5. A long line of traffic behind you means move the fuck over.

6. Do not keep tapping the brakes when no one is in front of you; at that speed you can slow down by coasting.

7. To the biker on the Harley that I pissed off by flashing my lights and riding two feet from your back: I was not impressed by the revolver you showed me by lifting up your vest. I can knock you off the motorcycle by the time you unholster that .38

Hope that's everything.

No problem, look for a silver one of these in your rear view mirror. When you hear the diesel engine, it means get the fuck out of the way.

Well, you alluded to it in #7, but just to lay it out there:

8. If I come up behind you and flash my brights, you are required by law to move over. Flashing is the legally acceptable way to basically say "Excuse me, coming through." Anyone who feels offended by it is either ignorant, or a tool, or both.

You are only entitled (by law) to pass the other vehicle if you do not need to exceed the speed limit to do so. Otherwise, you forfeit the right of way.

it was a hot sweltering friday afternoon. i did not have air conditioning. i was in hurry to get somewhere before the rush hour really kicked in, and this motherfucker would *not* get out of the left lane.

i must admit i lost it in a way i've only done a couple times in my life.

i started tailgating him within inches of his car, weaving, dropping back a few yards then roaring up again.

dripping sweat, hypnotized by andrenaline and anger and furnace air blasting in my windows. i'm not sure how long that went on. at least a couple of minutes. i was driving like an absolute maniac, determined to force him out of the lane.

then this dude pulled up alongside me on the right, his window down, yelling and waving at me. i couldn't hear what he was saying, but i remember the look on his face - he was angry - and that snapped me out of my trance.

i was like, fuck, what am i doing? acting like a complete idiot. i slowed down and pulled over into the righthand lane. took it easy, and got to where i was going when i needed to be there.

anyway, sure as death and taxes, there are left lane motherfuckers who just will not take a clue.

Many an American driver has been injured or killed trying to prove his manhood by not getting out of the way of an overtaking car in Germany.

In Germany, it is expected that you will only get out into the left lane long enough to pass a car, and will immediately get the fuck back into the right lane as soon as you are done passing. Many high-speed drivers refuse to slow down, they flash and expect you to hit the gas and overtake the car in the right lane and then get the fuck out of the way. Sometimes they end up rear-ending stupid people who just don't get it.

In this country, you can actually observe truly idiotic behavior like people who enter a highway and immediately get into the left lane, or who insist on driving parallel to or slightly to the left of, behind cars in the right lane, and act all self-righteous when someone attempts to pass. I'm not sure if they think they were deputized to regulate speed, or what.

There are some drivers that you can tell just don't know either way, they are just clueless. But some drivers seem to make it a matter of pride to constrict the flow of traffic, like they are better people for doing it, or something, and by flashing your brights or honking your horn at them, you are doing serious and irreversible harm to their value as a human.

Really? Where in the statutes does it say that?

§ 46.2-842.1. Drivers to give way to certain overtaking vehicles on divided highways.

It shall be unlawful to fail to give way to overtaking traffic when driving a motor vehicle to the left and abreast of another motor vehicle on a divided highway. On audible or light signal, the driver of the overtaken vehicle shall move to the right to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass as soon as the overtaken vehicle can safely do so. A violation of this section shall not be construed as negligence per se in any civil action.

I don't see anything in the law that says if you exceed the speed limit you "forfeit the right". It clearly states that any overtaking vehicle that gives and audible or visible signal has the right of way. On ANY divided highway.

No mention of speed limits or any restrictions on how fast one can go.

Don't forget, since this is a free country, you are free to drive as fast as you like, regardless of the posted speed limits. It's just that the police are free to pull you over and issue a warrant for a class III misdemeanor if they happen to catch you doing so.

The driver of any vehicle traveling at an unlawful speed shall forfeit any right-of-way which he might otherwise have under this article.

Furfur...my advice for you is to calm down buddy. The world wont come to an end if you cant speed along as fast you want to. No one needs to routinely exceed the posted speed limit by more then 5mph...no one!

who is the genius that came up with that law? perhaps i should start pulling out slightly in front of speeding cars so they bust my bumper and i can just collect cash and do it over and over. it's legal!

Just last night, I watched a pickup truck blow past me, and then get back into the right lane, just past the beltway on the toll road. Some jackass up ahead in a minivan who was tooling along at probably 50-55 in the left lane changed lanes into the right lane right in front of the pickup truck. I was going about 65-70, so the pickup must have been going at least 80. He slammed on his brakes and even swerved a little bit in the lane before jumping over into the left lane to avoid hitting the minivan. I mean the guy jumped into his lane at no more than 20 yards distance from the overtaking pickup.

As I passed the minivan, I made sure to cut back into the right lane a little close to him, just to sort of give him the same startle that he had given that guy in the pickup. HE FLASHED HIS BRIGHTS AT ME AND HONKED!!!

Either the guy was drunk, or totally clueless, or in some twisted narcisistic way he believes he was right for cutting directly in front the pickup and I was wrong for coming back into the right lane only inches from his bumper. (well, that part is true, but I did it because the guy was being such a danger to other drivers that I wanted to give him a little scare.)

Oh yeah, forgot to touch on your comment about doing it for cash...

I believe, but may be wrong, that insurance companies keep track of how many claims someone files. After a certain number in a certain time-frame, they may have the right to refuse to reimburse certain drivers regardless of fault.

I don't know any details, but I've heard people mention something about this a few times over the years.

DC drivers that I see around Virginia are the worst for inattentive driving. They don't change lanes, they slowly drift over without a turn signal.

Yield signs to them mean slam on the brakes even if it is an on-ramp, and if they are lost, there is no problem doing 25-30 mph below the speed limit while they twist their heads around like Linda Blair.

They are even worse IN DC.

Nothing is more frustrating than driving along a stretch of road behind someone who is just dawdling along at 15-20, and seeing a green light at the next intersection, with the pedestrian cross timer counting down, and then the DC driver starts to slow down even more as you get closer to the intersection, and 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, YELLOW LIGHT, and they stop. And since you happen to be on a two lane, two way street, you repeat this at EVERY intersection for 20 blocks.

Since the average traffic light cycles every 45 seconds, these assholes add 15 minutes onto your 15 minute commute.

I mean, all you have to do on any commuter route in DC is go 25 to 30, and odds are you will only get stuck at one or two traffic lights. 18th street is like that. Connecticut is like that. Porter and Irving are like that. Most of the known commuter routes have very well timed lights. If you get stuck at one light, you can pretty much go 25 to 30 mph the rest of the way and you'll approach the next intersection as the light changes to green.

Yet these idiots tool along and get everyone behind them stuck at EVERY GOD DAMNED LIGHT!

One time on my way to the VA hospital, I got stuck at the light at Irving and Mt. Pleasant. I was the first in line, when the light went green, I quickly got up to 30, and I cruised through the next 9 traffic lights, across 16th, 14th, 13th, 11th, Sherman, Georgia, Warder, Park and on, without stopping a single time. Of course, that was at 7:30 am on a sunday. Doing the same route during the week or really any day of the week during daylight hours, you will end up stopping at every single light, adding 10 minutes onto that little stretch that usually should only take about 6 or 7 minutes to traverse. And it's all because some ass in either a dark blue volvo or a really old badly painted crown vic, or sometimes a lexus suv or an escalade is driving incredibly slow and hitting their brakes at every intersection and slowing down at random intervals.

I don't know too much about it, but several people have told me over the years that insurance companies can refuse to reimburse a person who shows too many not-at-fault accidents on their driving record. One time, the rationale was that anyone who has been in such-and-such number of accidents is obviously committing fraud, another time the rationale was that someone who has 36 accidents caused by others probably is doing something wrong but just not being charged with fault, or something like that (so the insurance company can claim some number of no-faults equals a fault or something.)

I don't believe there is any law directly related to liability and comprehensive claims against faulted drivers and their insurance companies. If the at-fault party or their representative refuses to pay out for an accident, there is always civil court. I suppose that is how the insurance companies can get away with refusing to pay the guy who drives a 76 datsun B210 pickup who has filed 65 claims against other parties -- if and when he takes them to court to try to get paid, the insurance company shows the judge his driving record showing the 65 accidents on his record, and the judge isn't going to sympathize with him.
