Senate Backs Apology for Slavery in the US
Posted by: Registered Voter ()

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/18/AR2009061803877.html?hpid=moreheadlines

So of course, just saying we are "sorry for slavery" is not good enough. All the folks that want more money for the fact that their ancestors packaged them up and sold them to the Europeans and other nations as slaves will never be happy until they get their handout from the government. I would have no problem with that if they hadn't also fought for years to get other advantages (due to their supposed "disadvantage") for things from college tuition to hiring practices.

Quote

..
Randall Robinson, author of "The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks," said he sees the Senate's apology as a "confession" that should lead to a next step of reparations. "Much is owed, and it is very quantifiable," he said. "It is owed as one would owe for any labor that one has not paid for, and until steps are taken in that direction we haven't accomplished anything."
..

When they finally authorize a payout for reparations, or win a "landmark legal decision" against the US government for them, what will they have left to bitch about?

If you can’t model the past, where you know the answer pretty well, how can you model the future? - William Happer Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics Princeton University

Nobody asking for reparations was a slave. If there are any people left that were actually slaves, I say give them a million dollars.

These people are actually more damaging to their cause then not.

That is such horse shit. I didn't own anyone, nor did my family members. Now if they want to come mow my grass and clean my gutters, I'd be happy to give them $50.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean I should pay some homeboy from the hood because someone's grandpappy's grandpappy's grandpappy's grandpayy owned his grandpappy's grandpappy's grandpappy. My relatives weren't even in this country then.

Im not defending or saying anyone owes anyone money. But the wealth..infrastructure...that we enjoy and benifit from today is an accumulation of the labor of others. So the fact your family wasnt here at the time of slavery doesnt mean you arent feeling the benifit of those labors today.

There is a Cherokee owned casino in Fairfax that I didn't know about?
I have no ties to any casinos and do not participate in any "tribal activities".

Apologizing for something you weren't responsible for to people who never experienced the wrong makes no sense whatsoever. Therefore it is perfectly American.

well..thats quite an explanation. Reminder for all 2o something year olds...hurling an insult IS NOT an explanation of your opinion. I know your parents let you get away with that kind of behavior...but you are now an adult...you are expected to be able to explain your opinions.

What I want to know is since whites are now a minority by defenition in many parts of the country (or soon will be) when will we get priority contract bidding (for minority owned companies), preferential admissions to colleges and jobs based on our race.

We are a minority now, it is only fair.

Well, let me see if I can explain it to you in terms so easy that even you can understand it: Nobody alive today in this country either owned slaves or was a slave. Therefore an apology by people who did no wrong to people who were never wronged is meaningless as well as pointless. Got it? Probably not but there it is.

Sovereign government? Oh please. When did the "sovereign" government of the US ever own slaves? On the contrary, they fought a war at a cost of over half a million lives to end it. So what possible service does an apology serve today? Oh yea, it distracts a mindless, brainwashed population away from a bankrupt government,an imploding economy, involvement in two pointless wars, and general world unrest and upheaval.

I really can't believe the pussies running our country (and pussies running big corporations for that matter). Drop the white guilt, grow a spine. There's no way in hell I'd EVER apologize for something I didn't do. Even if my ancestors owned slaves, I wouldn't apologize for slavery.

Anyone who demands an apology for slavery (or reparations!? What a joke!) needs to move on. Slavery happened, it's shitty... no one here today was responsible for it. Quit blaming others for your problems. You are either lazy or racist. Your heads are so far up your asses you might not see the next generation of slavery.

Only after 4 score and 20 years did that government fight against slavery and some would say the civil was was never fought to release slaves. And that of course ignore the 200 - 300 year history before we became independent.

This is the equivalent of Jewish children growing up and demanding money from Germany.

It may be just because I'm white and don't know any better, but I kinda thought the whole point of the Emancipation Proclamation saying, "We don't think this is right anymore, now you're free" was sort of apologetic.

Again, neither the people in the government or the people asking for reparations had anything to do with slavery.

Well, if it was before independence then the government had yet to be formed so could hardly be culpable. Anyway, I've made my point. You continue to argue for the sake of arguing and are not even addressing the issue. Why doesn't the government just argue a blanket apology for every sin it's committed, real or imagined, since its founding? It would be just as meaningless but it would make nitwits like you happy so it would have some merit.

The case of the federal govt not exisiting ignores the fact that state governemnts did exist.

You made your point!!! OMG all you did was rant like a child..."Mommy, I didnt do it! Jimmy did!" The fact is that slavery is "THE" largest blight on our history...as put by Condolesa RIce....it is the original sin this country was born with. The attitude that diminsishes that reality...diminishes how we have all benifited from the horror of slavery even today....Is an ignorant and racist attitude.

Racism only exists because people differentiate between the different races. Every time an issue like this comes up, it forces the race issue back into the spotlight, thus reinforcing racism.

I really don't know why I am wasting my time on such an ignorant fool as you but I really can't resist. Your knowledge of US history is risibly lacking. If the country was not independent ($10 says that you don't even have a clue what country the US ultimately became independent of) then there were no independent states! Anyway, the point of all this is not to smarten up a chump like you. It's also not to say that slavery wasn't bad. The point is simply that to apologize for it now is a self-serving action devoid of all meaning.
By the way, it may come as a shock to you but this country is not the only place in world where slavery existed. The very word "slave" comes from "Slav" and refers to the Slavs that were kidnapped and sold into slavery for millenia. Who is offering apologies to them? Nobody because it doesn't matter anymore.
Ok, enough education for today. Sit here and make more of your witless, uninformed responses. I've said all I have to say. Maybe you should get off the computer from time to time and read a book. Start with a history book.

I can agree with you on that one Warhawk.

As Lupe Fiasco said it

"dont give the black man food give the red man liquor, red man fool, black man nigger, give yellow man tool, make him railroad boulder
also give him pan, make him pull gold from river give black man crack, glocks and things, give red man
craps, slot machines now bring it back"

describes perfectly how America will terrorize its own people living in its nation, then push them towards material objects to counter their wrong doing..

I agree with some of the later posts - the only folks that "we" the American people would conceivably owe any kind of sincere apology to would be to the American Indians. The good thing is, in most of the treaty disputes that have been brought to the courts in recent years, they have abided by the original treaty provisions as agreed to by the government at the time where appropriate. There have been a few cases (NY for instance) where tribes were trying to get the State to pay large "lease" or settlement claims on land they let people live and build on, but I don't know how those eventually turned out. Now that they can have casinos and other businesses on reservations they have started to bring in new money to reshape their lands (although there are still a few greedy folks in that process).

Blacks were taken as slaves by other tribes in Africa long before Europeans began trading for them as labor. These same slaves were then traded to the Europeans for other goods. So the original ("inkblot"/tatoo/stain/whatever) slavery was performed by Africans upon other Africans, and then these commodities were traded just like any other resource. Period. All of these reparation talks here in the US are driven by one thing only - Greed. There are folks in the black community who look at this as their big chance to cash in if they can make the government admit it made a mistake (for all Americans) so they can then lock them up in litigation for years - or just make a threat of legal litigation for years by Pro bono lawyers to lean on the government to pay a settlement to them. That is why in the article you see the commentary is mainly driven by folks who note nothing will make any difference until they are "compensated" for the injury done to them.

For all the folks that were in prior arguments here over why the Civil War was fought in this country (and I am NOT one that believes it was about slavery), if you believe it was totally about ending slavery, then I don't see how you can commit to the belief that anyone now living owes any sort of apologies for the hundreds of thousands of their family members that died for the end of slavery.

If black people get reparations from white people for all the slavery we did to them, the jews should get a fuckload of reparations from the egyptians for building the pyramids.

How about reparations to the Irish because we conned them into fighting for the Union in the War of the Nortern Agression and usually wound up with them being dead 10 minutes after they stepped on the battle field.

Any others?
