I doubt Moreno has spent one cent of his own money on the lawsuit.
Regardless, Virginia has some of the worst funded public defenders in the entire nation, and the fees for court-appointed attorneys are laughably low.
By law, the maximum fee payable for someone charged with a felony is $455* which means experienced, competent attorneys in private practice literally can't afford to defend indigent clients.
As far as court appointed attorneys go, you either have very inexperienced attorneys right out of law school for whom any money is better than no money, or you have people who are really bad lawyers who can't make a living except off the court appointed list.
This means that if he relies on a public defender or court-appointed attorney he's *much* more likely to get an unfavorable outcome that if he hired a private attorney.
Since that's what you *want*, I'd say a phone call is not needed. Just let the system work like it's designed to. (Poorly.)
*A felony that doesn't include the death penalty or the risk of 20+ years in prison. There is also a provision that the court can add another $155 to the court appointed attorney's fee if he applies for it. See how much quality attorney time *you* can get for $600. Hint: it ain't much.
