Mercer was among five students listed in the graduating class at Switzer Learning Center, according to a special graduation section published by the Torrance-based newspaper, the Daily Breeze, in 2009.

The Switzer Learning Center, also in Torrance, teaches students with special needs, emotional disturbances, autism, Asperger’s syndrome and other issues. According to its website, the school “has a long history of working with children who have been unsuccessful in traditional classrooms because they need the special attention and encouragement that only a school like Switzer can provide.”

And just for the record, autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it has various forms and degrees of severity. There are plenty of people with autism who wouldn't hurt a fly, won't even kill a spider.

Oddly enough, I recall a dude I was semi-acquainted with once many years ago,(friend of a friend) who was a tad disturbed. He reminds me of this shooter. He was mixed of three races, if I recall correctly, black,white,and an unspecified native American tribe. But he identified himself as Japanese, often walked around carrying a samurai sword strapped to his back, obsessed with final fantasy and other video games. And refused to be called by his legal name, in favor of a Japanese one he had chosen himself. He said his father was never around growing up,referred to his mother as "the bitch" and compulsively shaved his head and all body hair off weekly.

The term 'special needs' covers a lot of territory. I have not heard anyone say that this guy had autism. And even if he did, there'd be a lot more killings in this country if most autistics were violent.

Wellll, Adam Lanza was also doped up on a chemical cocktail of psych meds for years, his only parenting was a mother who wasn't that actively involved with his life and his care, and not only allowed him to be absorbed in violent video games, provided his legal access to firearms. I don't think it was soley the autism that caused his psychotic snap. I think there was a pile of contributing factors.

This seems to be at odds with other liberal policies. It's ok to takes guns from the public because of a few people. But if we want to take guns away from people with autism because of a few autistic people shouldn't be armed -- that's a problem? At this point you will tell me that is discrimination and everyone must be treated fairly. Fine -- trade freedom for security and see were you get.

The mother of the gunman who killed nine people in a rampage at an Oregon community college wrote in online postings years ago that she was a gun enthusiast and her son had a form of autism.

In another post nine years ago about autism, Laurel Harper said: "My son has Asperger's. He's no babbling idiot nor is his life worthless. He's very intelligent and is working on a career in film making."

Asperger's syndrome is the name sometimes used for a form of disorder on the mild end of the autism spectrum. Many of those posts offered advice for parents of children with autism.

My guess is Aspergers with comorbidity, such as Sociopathy. Its very possible, although not as common. Same with the Sandy Hook shootings. Autism and sociopathy are a really bad combo. Just plain autism would be less likely than everage to do something like this.
