It said he has a total of at least $20,000 on two cards. That's not that much actually. At one point I let one of my cards go up to $34,000 and I paid it off in about 15 months. I only made ~$80,000 at the time. He could probably pay it off in 3 or 4 months.

He might not be carrying it from month to month; it could be those are charges for the current month. If the balance from the previous month is paid on time, there is usually zero interest.
Someone making 80k could easily pay off 34k in 15 months, of course.
