Just Closed A Major Defense Contract - Got Bonus Need Advice on Cars?
Posted by: Pondering ()
Date: August 03, 2015 01:10PM

So I just closed a defense deal I've been working on for 3 months now. I have about $75,000 in a bonus to spend.

Yes, I'm spending it! All my other expenses like IRA, Roth, medical, legal shit are covered under my employment contract so I don't need to "save it."

I'm looking at either getting a new car, two jet skis or a boat?

What should I get. I'm favoring the car or boat, but jet skis might me nice for the ladies and vacays.

Get a Mustang. It's a nice ride plus you can use it as your home.

Pass on FORD Mustang. Not a big fan of FORD products. Thinking about a used "pre-owned" Lexus.

I have a camper I refurbished that I can always use as a home in an apocalypse. It even has two generators and a ham radio. I take it to concerts and Redskins games for tailgating.

BTW you can get some cheap ass party campers off e-bay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Class-C-Mallard-Mini-Motorhome-26-NO-RESERVE-/252042310943?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3aaee4751f&item=252042310943

Just be make sure the trans and engine are good. I had to rebuild part of the trans on my camper after only six months. Friend and I did the work. Gear heads.

How old are you?

If you're young, you should have at least $3,000,000 in assets before spending $75,000 on a car. If you're older, a lot more.

Anyways, If I had to blow it. I would get a $100,000 car that just came of a 3 year lease for $60k and find jet skis on craigslist. People can't even give jet skis away, they lose their value faster than cars of regular boats. $15k will find you a nice pair of 4 stroke Yamahas.

34, I make close $160,000 salary before commissions. I have about $950,000 in assets including my house which is basically paid off in two years. I will inherit around $1.6 million from a grandfather most likely with 5-10 years and more from folks. Oh and I'm single with no kids so I don't need to save for their college.

I've seen some Lexus, little older models for around 25-30K. I might do that. I assume a Lexus with 50,000 miles is still a good buy?

That's a fair amount considering most people with $50k cars are broke or have very little assets.

A Lexus with 50,000 miles that cost $30k will be fine and last you a long time. With the exception of the IS-F, they are all pretty boring cars, inferior to German luxury cars except in reliability. When I see a Lexus I either think of old people or Asians.

Lexus is a piece of shit, transmissions always go out. Most women around Fairfax are impressed by Prius.

I figure at 30k with 50,000 I could enjoy for 40k and then sell it. Maybe get around 20k for it easy. Lexus preowned seems to hold their value well.

Why don't you help out some homeless niggers? You certainly don't need it.

I can almost guarantee this hipster doesn't give a cent to charity.

You're wrong. I give at least 10% to charity every year in addition to volunteering at charity events and homeless shelters.

I don't however give money to street beggars. That is just encouraging them to stay on the streets and beg.

Ok listen, you're mister perfect. But everybody has something fucked up about themselves. What's yours? There is obviously a reason you're not married.

Faggot? Incredibly ugly? Impotent? About to appear on "My 600 lb Life"?

I like women, just not into them. Men are much more tasty and I am more of a bottom. I will marry someday I guess since it is finally legal.

I have NO desire to get married. One of my friends said, "Stop being so picky just grab some girl and make it work." Needless to say he is miserable in his marriage. All I hear is complaints about his wife "wants" or "won't let."

I also travel a lot for work so why be tired down in a relationship. I enjoy dating and meeting new women. Not married means I can date anybody I want.

Nope, but I sure as hell aren't posting my tax returns here to prove it! LOL

By the way in case you're getting ready to bash my charity donations. Yes I do itemize them and deduct all of them from tax filing. That's my right. I've also worked my ass off 8-5pm every day(except weekends of course LOL) for the last 10 years since I got out of college.

This thread smells of bullshit. But, I will respond out of morbid curiosity.

Recap: you make $160k, your house will be paid off in 2 years, your investments are funded, and you'll be inheriting $1.6M in 5-10 years.

Assuming all of this is true (cough cough cough)....

Just buy an awesome car and stop worrying about it. Ford Mustang?? Not a chance. It's a piece of shit on a good day. A boat?? Are you fucking insane? They cost a lot to buy, and cost a lot to operate. They are a money pit. Find a friend with a boat and help pay for gas. The 2 best days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

Get an Infinti Q70 or a BMW 550. They are practical, powerful, seats 4+, have trunks, reputable, sexy (to straights and gays), and will not go out of style in the next 5-10 years.

Lot's of peasants on FFXU so it's no surprise they think $950,000 is a ton of money. Most college educated people in Fairfax over the age of 50 have much more than that.

That's not a bad plan on the Lexus.

No, I can't stand Snyder and with HDTV's I have no problem watching the majority of games at a bar or having friends over to BBQ. I did take the RV to all games years ago and it was a blast but now it's a huge hassle and I can't stand paying $8-9 a beer and the RV in traffic.

I do two games then watch the rest on an HDTV someplace.

Exactly. I've worked hard to get to where I'm at. 8-5 everyday for the past 10 years. $950,000 total for a 34 year old is NOTHING for Fairfax county. Granted my folks did help me with a loan to buy my first townhouse but I was able to flip that and make some $$$.

Still trying to impress creeps on FU?.........LOSER!

I like how this thread morphed from OP asking for advice on cars to OP trying to prove to the nitwits on this forum that he is some kind of Fairfax white trash baller. Nobody cares about your RV. Oh and by the way, even poor niggers have HDTV's. It's kind of normal these days.

You call 8-5 working hard? I'm sure this includes a 1 to 1.5 hour lunch right?

When I was with GE at your age, I was working 16 hour days normally and some 20 hour days. You aren't shit son.

LOL bullshit. Any DOD contract that you get a decent bonus on takes a year to a year in a half.

Nope, you're wrong - http://www.defense.gov/Contracts/Contract.aspx?ContractID=5597

We were one of many awarded. DOD didn't give the bonus directly. The company I'm working for paid the bonus for securing the contract.

Absolutely. Now way in hell does the government buy anything that quickly. Major deals take over 2 years. I have worked in government technology sales since 1998 for most of the major players. Nobody in government sales would make $160,000 "before commission." Total compensation if you meet the plan target could range from $150,000 - $250,000 depending on the company, but the plan number always includes commission.

Actually, I have done tons of proposal work, no major firm does this, it looks improper and really stupid. The bonus for those working on it is that they keep their job for another 5 years. If you do get a bonus, it will be when the fee comes in. OP is completely full of shit or is sitting on the bench and day dreaming, because his skills are weak.

Maybe he wasn't a commissioned sales guy, in fact it sounds more like he isn't on commission. I've received bonuses for selling new business, but no company is going to pay out a bonus until the work is actually booked. That doesn't happen in 3 months, and typically any payout would happen at the end of the following quarter.

This.

Idiots forget that lots of people around here do or have done this type of work for a long time. You don't "close" on any of the sorts of contracts linked to in the way suggested. 3 months? Working 8-5, no weekends doing proposal work? lmao That's funny.

Sorry poser OP, just doesn't work that way.

I dont know anything about DoD contracting or how it works, but i knew a guy from my country (Morocco) who came here when he was 19yrs old. Went to college, double majored in CS and Business Administration, worked his way through college and bought a house. He became a citizen when he was 26 and got a job with a big International company based in Fairfax.

He makes about $230k a yr and travels all around the world.

The house he bought is now worth $760k in Falls Church city.

The people on this site are fucking losers. Stay in school and major something important instead of calling others liars.

My cousin is only 32yrs old and is a Jr. Executive. He just got his master's also, all paid for by his company.

Ooooo a Jr. Executive!!! lol

I'm going to cut you a break since you're not from around here but just for future reference calling someone a Jr. Executive isn't particularly impressive.

Lots of us did stay in school and hold multiple degrees. We also worked our way up to positions of importance in the same companies that they OP is talking about or in government on the other side. Which is why we know that he's full of shit.

The OP said he made $160,000 salary before commissions. He also said he he'd "closed a deal." He is clearly implying he is a sales rep. Only thing is no company pays $160,000 before commissions. Pay is always based on making your numbers.

He could be very connected in the DC DOD scene. If that's the case than $160,000 salary+commissions would be pennies.

I know a guy who took over his fathers small DOD contracting company and he makes over 35k+ a month! Plus he only works when there is a contract about 6 months out of the year.

If his Dad was high up in the DoD, like a General or something along those lines and has connections then no problem getting huge DoD contracts and nice $$$.

I do BD/Capture pursuing government contracts. My salary is $135k. There are plenty of Sr BD and Capture guys making $150-175k salary before bonuses/commissions. If you are connected, past PM work on strategic contracts, etc then you have a tremendous value to the systems integrators. I know a guy who worked for STG as a Sr Capture Manager and his salary was closer to $200k.

I'm not saying the OP is being honest. But what he/she is saying is plausible.

I'm not sure if many of the people on this board understand the hours and effort that goes into pursuing government contracts. It's not a 9-5 job. I work typically 7am and am often answering emails and doing some proposal work until 10pm or so (from home).

Be jealous and bash successful people all you want. But the truth is that successful people more than likely work harder than others and are paid well because of that.

You people are such a sore losers who were all born here and have nothing to show for.

I have another cousin from also Morocco (cousin through my mother) and works for a Pharmaceutical company (Top 10, i won't mention names). Went to school in George Mason and has also attended Oxford in England.

Guess how much money he is making? Yep you guessed it, $190k a year. He lives in a fully furnished apartment in Boston paid for by his company.

The company also pays for his car and reimburses for all his meals and travel expenses. I know this because i spent weekend with him in Boston. We ate at the most expensive restaurants and did everything.

Again, stay in school weirdos and everything is open to you.

And nobody at any of those companies, several of which I've worked for or with doing similar business development work, made a $75K bonus for "closing" the contract.

Nor were any of them only 3 months in the making; rather, they all involved years.

Nor does anyone at any of those companies even talk of "closing" such contracts. You don't show up as a sales guy and "close" deals like these. They all involve many people working over a long period of time, the sales guy being one of the least important.

Nor are any of the key people responsible for pursuing such contracts paid on a salary + commission basis. Depending on the structure of the company it's not even possible under FAR/DOD in most cases to pay people that kind of a bonus as a direct result of a contract win since it's indirectly paid with the government's money. The auditors would shit.

Nor would any bonus anyone might receive be done on contract award.

The OP fucked up his bs story by claiming to have "closed" a major DOD contract. Doesn't work that way. The only people who believe this bullshit are those who have never done this type of work.

I feel sorry for you. Sounds like you're very bitter.

You've worked with the wrong sales teams. Hell I know companies that give away free Nationals Lexus seats and vacations for closing DOD and other gov contracts.

lol. Nope, not bitter at all. I just know wtf I'm talking about. I made good money milking the government tit for many years at some of the same companies cited. You don't "close" major DOD contracts in the way that the OP and you are portraying it. Doesn't work like that. In fact, it'S not even a "sales team" which leads such efforts in most cases. But neither one of you idiots know enough about how the process actually works to even bullshit your way through it.

I feel sorry for you that you're gullible enough to believe a post like this especially on FFXU.

The OP stated that he/she worked on the closing for 3 months. He/she did not say the closing took 3 months. He/she may have been new to the opportunity and gotten a bonus as part of the team.

I still don't buy the whole 8-5 no weekends thing though

I've worked as government sales rep for Sun, NetApp, Oracle, and others. No major sale took less than a year. Compensation is based on making a sales target. If you don't make the numbers, you are soon gone. You can make a lot more than $160k but than is with commission/bonus. Straight salary without any commission would be much lower typically, and as I said if you don't earn any commission you will not be around l9ng.

I was looking at pre-owned Lexus'. I see no need to prove my worth or post my tax returns. No point, just wasting time. I have car to buy. Yes, decided the a car was the way to go because I can enjoy it 24/7.

Man you are so full of shit.

If you see no need to prove your worth why did you even bring it up to begin with?

You could have easily posted Looking a new car in the xxx price range and need some suggestions

But no, you went on and on about what you own, how much you make, blah blah blah. You are a FRAUD sir.

What's wrong with you?

I asked for suggestions between getting a boat, jet skis or a car from a bonus check.

You, in turn, go on some rant about prove my worth to you and I suck?

Shut it. Everyone knows you're a fucking liar.

34, I make close $160,000 salary before commissions. I have about $950,000 in assets including my house which is basically paid off in two years. I will inherit around $1.6 million from a grandfather most likely with 5-10 years and more from folks. Oh and I'm single with no kids so I don't need to save for their college.

Exactly. I've worked hard to get to where I'm at. 8-5 everyday for the past 10 years. $950,000 total for a 34 year old is NOTHING for Fairfax county. Granted my folks did help me with a loan to buy my first townhouse but I was able to flip that and make some $$$.

What does any of this ^^^ have to do with a car choice?

I was answering a question-

"How old are you?

If you're young, you should have at least $3,000,000 in assets before spending $75,000 on a car. If you're older, a lot more."

You probably work at Starbucks and drive a busted up Honda Civic or a Scion with a fart can.

I was asked about my age and financial assets. I answered.

Soon I will driving this gem - http://www.pohankalexuschantilly.com/VehicleDetails/certified-2014-Lexus-ES_300h-4dr_Sdn_Hybrid-Chantilly-VA/2566715273

Get a used 28-30 ft sailboat like a Hunter 30-35 K . Keep it at the Wash Sailing Marina or on the bay Deale Md /Shady Side

They are chick magnets. Just mention going for a sail and they will swoon. You can spend weekends on them partying without spending much for gas.

Forget the jet skis, storing them , taking care of them, you can rent them at the beach

One of the reasons I was considering a boat to jet skis was women in bikinis. I still think a nice car will pull in more tail than a boat.

Go with the sailboat.

You'll be rolling in tail.

Absolutely not. Chicks do not give a rats ass about cars. The only thing a nice car will attract is dudes (straight dudes). You just need a a car that is presentable-looking. Anything more is better spent/invested elsewhere on something else. Boats are chick magnets. I recommend a power boat. Dock at Georgetown or Old Town on Fridays and you will have a steady supply of hoes.

The Lexus RCF has more than just reliability on BMWs. They have superior build quality (no, not just reliability, but just the quality of materials used in the cars), a more intuitive and robust infotainment system with more and better features, just as many luxury features overall, cheaper routine maintenance, and the RC and IS look better than their BMW counterparts, too, if you ask me. Oh, and the Lexus will hold its value better, too, especially if you buy new.

The only thing the BMWs have is speed and manual transmissions... Both of which are nice benefits, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't sound like the OP cares about either.

Except the interior. Have you been inside of a IS-F? Holy shit, I've seen Ladas with nicer interiors. The dash and glove compartment is made out the same Toyota corolla grade plastic.

Not sure about the RCF, but the IS-F has the shittiest infotainment system out of all of the luxury cars, even Fords Sync is better.

The ISF looks worse than the competition (C63/M3) IMO. Those fake ass tail pipes, and just an over all Toyota Camry looking car.

>The only thing the BMWs have is speed and manual transmissions...

Handling, feel, fun to drive, speed, manual transmission, and better Auto tranny too.

> cheaper routine maintenance,.
>Oh, and the Lexus will hold its value better, too, especially if you buy new.

+1

I have driven my friends IS-F quite a few times, it just doesn't have anything on a true sports car like an M3 or C63. The handling and feeling is just not there. Don't get me wrong the IS-F and likely RCF are great cars. No one else offers a high horsepower luxury car with the reliability of a Toyota.

The interior you posted is over a decade old now. Of course it doesn't hold up that well anymore. Compared to cars of its time, it was as good as anything in class. I'm sure the new IS-F will be way better (the current IS350 is pretty damn nice and sporty looking). Also, the materials were FAR better than any Toyota, and the leather had to have been skinned off the finest cows in the land.

I agree the ISF doesn't look great. But again, I was talking about the current generation of IS/RC.

We're just gonna have to agree to disagree about the infotainment system... I think it utterly destroys iDrive. Incidentally, consumer reports had some data recently on which system from every car was the safest and most intuitive to use while driving, and Toyota/Lexus won handily.

Also as someone who owns a 2015 Mustang GT PP Premium with navigation and used to ave a Lexus IS, I can confirm that Sync is not as nice as what Lexus is offering.

I agree the BMW will be more fun overall, I meant to imply that with my speed/manual comments. But the new RCF is still pretty damn fun from what I hear. Plus, you get the roar of a V8 rather than a TC 6-cyl.

This is the interior of the one I looked at today. It's a 2014 Hybrid at $34k asking.

The right side of the console by the stick shift has kinda a track ball type button for moving the cursor up and around on the gps and entertainment system screen.
