Methods for Punishing Children
Posted by: Eastsider ()
Date: May 24, 2009 11:50PM

What are your thoughts on effective methods for disciplining children? Comment on what circumstances/crimes/recidivism would warrant the following (if any):

Spanking on buttocks with hand, over pants
Spanking on buttocks with hand, pants down
Spanking on buttocks with belt, over pants
Spanking on buttocks with belt, pants down
Spanking on places other than buttocks

Restricting them to their room
Locking them in their room
Restricting them to a bathroom

Monetary fines/docking allowance
Extra chores
No TV
Hard labor (e.g., dig a trench)

Allowing them no dessert
Sending them to bed with no dinner
Allowing them only bread and water for one day

Handcuffing them (in private/in public)
Straitjacketing
Forcing them to wear ugly clothes to school/in public
Forcing them to listen to bad music (e.g., Bette Midler)
Returning a pet to the pound
Sending them to military school

I would force the children to read Vince(1)'s posts.

While this may seem cruel, it will show them the importance of studying, working hard, and graduating from high school.

I swear my parents used that guide when raising my siblings and I. They also employed the following:

Slipperang - A leather, rubber-soled house slipper flung at high velocity. After we got hit with it, we then had to bring it back to the parent that threw it. Which would put us in melee range for a "five across the eyes."

Carousel Spanking - A method for spanking a child while standing. Grab one of their arms, spank with the other arm (belt/slipper/switch/whatever is optional but preferred). As the child tries to run away, they only succeed in moving in a circle.

In all honesty, I hate to think about the type of person I would have become if my parents hadn't beaten the living shit out of me when I had it coming. I only hope I'm a good enough parent to do the same for my kids.

All of it. Although the "carousel spanking" made me giggle.

I'm not a spanker. Well, in the parenting sense. *snicker* It wasn't very effective with me growing up.

Maybe it's different with girls. Boys need their asses kicked every once in a while.

I don't think being confined to your own bedroom is a real punishment; there's too much cool stuff to do. With the exception of an empty walk-in closet, a bathroom is the place in the house with the least available entertainment, so I think it can serve as an effective "penalty box".

It depends on the temperament of the kid. My oldest son hates being isolated, so it works well for him. It also works in terms of "cooling down" when the kids have been fighting. Plus, as the kids get older, it is harder to spank them without it being ridiculous.

I might give the bathroom a try, though. I think you have some valid points.

No doubt. I deserved every spanking, slap, restriction and punishment that I got. Thank the Lord that my parents had some limits and subsequent consequences if you got out of line, otherwise I'd be a total self-absorbed fuckup with no sense of right, wrong, responsibility or accountability.

A lot parents today don't want to do the hard work that is parenting. They want to be "cool". Fuck that. You're not your kid's best friend, you're his parent and you need to tow the line and be the bad guy when push comes to shove.

But, you can't be so stubborn in your methods because it depends on the kid. I've never spanked my daughter, but I've never needed to. My son on the other hand....whoo boy, but now he's too old to get "spanked". It looks stupid trying to spank a 14 year old kid with a "Vote for Pedro" mustache. But I'm not opposed to beating his ass if he needs it.

A genuine leather belt transcends age and gender when it comes to punishment. Just don't hit with the buckle, that's fucked up.

I was going to bring up something about her but thought it would be too obscure. Glad I'm not the only one who equates garroting with JonBenet.

Parents should never hit kids. It encourages cheating and children model their parents behavior. In countries where it is banned, youth suicide rated are much lower. You're older, smarter..Explain what is wrong. Don't be a dumbass caveman.

Yeah, I don't understand why parents would resort to physical violence to discipline a kid. If you can't find a non-violent approach, your parenting license should be revoked. While agreeing with a poster named "Stinkfist" is scary on its face, I find I must.

It's probably a generational thing--If you got hit, you're a hitter? Just seems Cheney-esque to me.

Well, with one exception: Inkahootz's Dad had no remaining choices, I'm sure.

The purpose of spanking is to have it there as the ultimate threat. I hardly ever spank my kids. But the fact that it is there as the final option usually gets them to shape up.

We have parents on our street who don't spank their kids. Their kids have zero...ZERO...respect for authority. They ignore their parents. They trample on other people's lawns. They generally get away with murder. In fact, we have a whole generation of "Time Out Kids" who don't respect authority at all and think they are entitled to respect they haven't earned. The so-called "Millennials" are going to be more spoiled than the Baby Boomers were in the late 60s when Dr. Spock fucked up that generation.

Explain what is wrong? If they didn't know it was wrong, why do they hide it or lie about it when they do it?

Kids need corrective action. If time out or going to their room or docking their allowance isn't working, a smack will.
