I have to agree about the quiet factor. I can think of multiple occasions where I've almost stepped in front of a hybrid I couldn't hear coming. Then they get all cunty that I didn't notice their silent vehicle... The only reason I'd ever think about getting a hybrid is so I can use the HOV lane at all times. Selfish reasons.

When a Smart Fortwo collided with a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan, in new crash tests done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the little Smart car went airborne and did what amounted to a pirouette. The news was not much better when the institute crashed a Honda Fit into a Honda Accord, and a Toyota Yaris into a Toyota Camry.

I was driving through the West Virginia mountains the other day going through Wheeling and a Tesla was doing pretty well in the passing lane going up hill. The grades are pretty steep at 5-8% and it was walking right past the big ford trucks and other family vehicles. Good looking cars too. And the guy never has to buy gas. The wife looked it up and web site says 294 miles on a charge and at 3 years the batteries still held 85% life. The site also stated there was no long term data available to determine actual battery life and replacement criteria. They did say battery replacement would be expensive and that extreme weather conditions affected battery life. So there still seems to be some bugs to work out. List price on the High end model was 101K and about 65-80k for the others. Pretty spendy for any car and while it looks promising it appears to early for the electric car to replace my F350. It's a great idea worth developing though.

A battery in Tesla is dead in 50k miles and costs $30k to replace. Check car classifieds in LA. Tons of them for sale with fried batteries.
Realistically, you get about 200 miles out of a charge. At least my brother does. They used to be a status symbol but now they're nothing special. I'll take 50mpg in a diesel car anyday.
