Arrests in New York 'attack plot'
Four men have been arrested over alleged plots to attack targets in New York, US prosecutors say.

The men were planning to blow up a Jewish synagogue in the Riverdale area of the Bronx, the district attorney said in a statement.

They were also plotting to shoot down military aircraft at Stewart Airport, in Newburgh to the north of the city.

The group intended to use Stinger surface-to-air missiles to bring the planes down, the statement said.

The four will appear in court on Thursday in White Plains, and face from 25 years to life imprisonment if found guilty.

The men were arrested after buying inactive missiles and inert explosives in an FBI sting operation.

"The defendants wanted to engage in terrorist attacks," said Lev Dassin, acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

"They selected targets and sought the weapons necessary to carry out their plans."

According to prosecutors, the men planned to detonate a car packed with plastic explosives outside the Riverdale synagogue.

They also intended to target military planes at the New York Air National Guard base at Stewart Airport, 60 miles (85 km) north of New York City.

The arrests were the result of a year-long investigation, officials said.

The notes say it was a year-long investigation, which puts its origin during the time when government gave more of a shit about saving American lives and less of a shit if that could be accomplished by splashing water on someone's face. I worry more about the plans being hatched now.

I find the promise of eternal life with family members...floating around in the ethers...just as ridiculous as the promise for 72 virgins. Personally my ridiculous vision of heaven would include 72 well seasoned women...to hell with virgins.

It is amazing to see how far this country has come since Ronald Reagan set us on the course of militarization. The biggest lie associated with our military and intelligence assets is that they are peace keepers. I am quite sure that if no one in this country had guns but the military and law enforcement....and if some foreign power was attacking our soil...and if it looked like a serious threat...guns could and would be distributed in time. Remember back to Katrina... gangs were pillaging the buildings left standing, and the police were going door-to-door _taking away_ guns from people who stayed behind. Never trust law enforcement or anyone but yourself to protect your own life in emergency situations.
