What is the United States to you?
Posted by: Soaring Eagle ()
Date: May 17, 2009 09:38PM

The United States is a lot of different things to different people. What is it to you? Is it the land of opportunity? Is it the world police? Is it a land of true freedom, or land of oppression and tyrrany?

What say you?

The ugly fallout from the American Dream has been coming down on us at a pretty consistent rate since Sitting Bull's time. And the only real difference now is that we seem to be on the verge of ratifying the fallout and forgetting the Dream itself.

We're just another country. The only thing different is we are able to outspend everyone else.

Adding to that; I have been to other countries, and the US would be the only country I would want to be a part of.

Its just I do not think we are "the best" in a broad definition of the word.

what IS america? or what SHOULD america be? it IS the worlds police, a place full of political corruption, a population that is now seen as consumers instead of individuals, and a place where freedoms are slowly being taken away. What SHOULD america be? The country of tolerance, religious freedom, individual freedoms, and a country where the government is accountable to the people, and not the other way around.

Ask Muslims and minorities in those countries that question. Are we banning Muslim scarves in our classrooms?

I'll also add that European governments exercise much more censorship over their media than the U.S. government.

You may agree with the Gayssot Act in principle, but it is still technically government-sanctioned censorship...

I agree...but we dont absolute freedoms in the media here either. Our restrictions just seem to be more sex based then religiously based.

With the exception of the FCC's ridiculous censorship of broadcasting outlets over sex and profanity, most of those regulations are self-imposed by the cable, print and Internet news outlets themselves. As far as I know, the government can't stop CNN from reporting about stories that are sexual in nature or that defame religion if CNN chose to do it. They opt not to do it because advertisers would stop advertising. But that is not government censorship.

so you support forcing ideologies upon people? what if it were a islamic society, would you want women to be forced to wear the scarf?

censorship is still alive and well, even in your favorite canada. guess why they cant own a satellite dish? it's because their media isnt allowed to show info about big court cases on tv and they would be able to find out about it from a satellite tv provider.

Federal regulators drove Howard Stern off commercial/public radio. Made us pay for the honor of listening to lesbians do it. After the Janet Jackson wardrobe incident many stations were fined for behavior that previous to that incident would have gone unnoticed. I hope and pray the FCC starts to enforce the fairness doctrine to the radio waves. Those are all very powerful censorship powers of the US Govt. I am sure Europew and the rest of the world also has access to cable shows that bypass their Government's scrutiny just like we do. Plus Europeans in general are much more apt to get out into the streets and demonstrate when their govt.'s atempt to change some rule. Meanwhile such behavior here is riduculed as extreme..and how dare they delay rush hour! So..you havent convinced me yet on the speech issue.

Most of the world enjoys easier access to medical care. Doesnt that constitute a greater "freedom" then we have here? "Life"..liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Cant do any of that if you are sick and have no access to mdical care.

How is medical care a "freedom?" You might be able to argue "a right." But it is not "a freedom."

But then again, it's not a guaranteed right.

I think it just makes the point that citizens from other countries enjoy rights equal to ours...maybe even surpass us. There might be some differences at the edges..minor stuff...but basically the same. Where this country may have been the first to enjoy many freedoms...may have been...maybe still is a shining example of freedom...many countries have caught up and in certain ways surpass us.

I hardly call that elitist...if Webster hadn't standardized American English, we'd probably be left with dozens of dialects unintelligible to each other.
You know in some countries you can drive 10 miles down the road and have people speak an entirely different dialect than the last place.

Concise and clear communication is not elitist. Its the point of communication is to be clearly understood then a standard of language and grammar is essential.

According to the annual study conducted by the Economists Intelligence Unit, there are 17 countries that have surpassed us. In fact, the US is usually ranked that low.

So the Economic Intelligent Unit ranks Malta higher than America? Does anyone even know where Malta is located?

Perhaps they have a better democracy but no way they enjoy all the freedoms we have here.

One reason we are lower than other countries is that the EIU considers civil unions/gay marriage a civil right. Since most states do not recognize gay marriage, the scores are lower for the USA.

The United States is a country that was founded upon deeply held principles of equality of opportunity and freedom to pursue tranquility. As our nation stretched and grew Americans morphed to actualize new realities that became increasingly inclusive as they converged upon the ideal. In doing so we occassionally overshoot our goals, even to the point that we betray our own principles. When we come to the point that we attempt to marginalize or outlaw religion, when we come to the point that we penalize the industrious for their industriousness, when we come to the point that we allow the government to incarcerate more people than any country on the planet, we fail our mission every bit as much as our forefathers failed their mission in tolerating institutions like slavery and child labour. The American way under such circumstances is course correction. In this case it seems we need to heed to words of Thomas Jefferson to escape the tyrrany of the masses.

Many of our founding fathers marginalized formal religions...and seperation of church and state though not in the Constitution a founding principal.

The libertarian whine..."wahhhh..I pay too much tax! wahhh..wahhhh...wahhh". Let me remind you that the WHiskey Rebellion of 1794 settled the issue of the need of federal govt to raise taxes. And despite our taxation system this country has more billionaires then the rest of the world. Get over it.

Otherwise I agree with 80% of what you say.

does this mean you would be ok with taxing people registered as a member of the democratic party double the amount of everyone else? it would solve the problem of upsetting everyone else and rake in lots of money.
