HAMILTON — A local lawmaker and Butler County’s sheriff are working on legislation to require all employers to check the Social Security numbers of everyone they hire to screen for illegal immigrants.
State Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, filed the bill Wednesday, May 13, according to his office. It would require all public and private employers to check Social Security numbers against the federal government’s free E-Verify system before hiring someone.
“It requires employers and governments to verify that the person that they’re hiring is not a foreign lawbreaker, that they’re legal, they’re here legally and they have correct Social Security numbers,” Combs said. “The hope is that legal Americans will be able to ... get these jobs.”
The bill would require law enforcement agencies to use the service to verify the identity of every person they arrest.
Combs and Sheriff Richard K. Jones will announce more specifics today, May 14.
Jones said his department already does what is mandated in the bill, but many don’t.
Jones said the bill “has been a long time coming,” and will help protect American jobs and keep illegal immigrants who are repeat offenders off the streets by shipping them out of the country.
The federal government created E-Verify as a voluntary program for employers, allowing them to quickly verify a worker’s eligibility online.
Three states — Arizona, Mississippi and South Carolina — require all employers to use E-Verify, while two states — Idaho and North Carolina — require it only of public agencies, according to the National Immigration Law Center, an immigrant advocacy group.
Opposition to such measures in other states has come from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — which argues the program is unreliable and imposes penalties on employers — and the American Civil Liberties Union, labor unions and advocates for immigrants.

I still rank Sherrif Joe NUMBER ONE - Joseph M. Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona
Prior to Statewide E-Verify, Sherrif Joe was rounding up illegals and shipping them out on a regular basis. Since E-Verify, the illegals moved along (on the own dime) which opened up thousands of jobs for legal residents.
Now, though, they're competing for jobs with Americans in neighboring states, except setions of NM which are not "occupied" by Mexican drug and human smugglers who are laying low until the heat is off in Mexico.

Arpaio Rocks Too! In fact, Jones went to Az to meet with him and exchange
ideas. The Congressional District he lives in has a very high unemployment
rate and more illegals than you can count. The folks who live there
really admire him. He also has a demonstrated record of being aggressively

I met Sherrif Joe and he is one cool dude.
Unlike many Sherrifs, Sherrif Joe does the job he is hired to do. Because he did his job so well in Maricopa County, the rest of AZ voters were unrelenting, and thus succeeded in making E-Verify a statewide mandate.
It just doesn't get any better than that.

I really hope there will some momentum in Virginia. One thing that layoffs
and high unemployment leads to is people actually looking around and
seeing who is taking jobs they could sometimes desperately use. I saw
a newsclip the other night about a job fair down South and thousands of
Americans showed up. There were only a handfull of beaners in line and
they looked very worried due to only rumors of E-verify being required.

Beaner! When you cant treat people with respect..you dont deserve to be treated with respect.
I routinely walk 2 miles every day..and perchance one day last week I came upon two homes being expanded....a lawn service..and a trash pick-up company. Guess what..only hispanics were working those jobs. The average age of the US anglo community is approximately 42..the average hispanic...near half that. We need these people (not beaners)....as much as they need us.

Joe Arpaio is a loudmouth redneck who likes to talk tough to keep his name in the paper and sell his book. Period. He's an egomaniac who likes to abuse the powers of his office and bully the press. Alot of trash talk, minus the results. I have friends living out there who say crime is just as bad under this douchebag's third-world-country mentality. He's only famous because he's controversial, and he's well hated within the community. Most of his support comes from the demographic that watches WWE, listens to Rush Limbaugh, and eats too much bacon. He basically gets elected for his entertainment value, he's a master at self-promotion.

You're right, he is well hated - within the community of those who committed crimes and did the time. The AZ illegal alien advocates don't like him either.

Yeah, it's a good thing this genius figured out that baloney sandwich thing. Something's gotta pay for all those multi-million dollar lawsuits filed against his dept. Nothin' like a good ol' publicity stunt to help keep that image going strong.
