How to Get a key made for a 1965 car with no key to copy!
Posted by: Help! ()
Date: May 08, 2015 04:56PM

Ready to sell my 1965 Ford Thunderbird. It has been sitting for awhile, doesn't start, but after posting it, at least 8 guys now want to buy it.

Problem now is, my kid lost the only key for it.

I have called a couple of locksmiths and they say they can't help me.

Any suggestions?

Wiseass comments not encouraged, unless you also post naked girls.

With a title that is clear and in your name you should be able to get a mold made of the locks. However, try contacting a antique car dealer and just inquire. I am sure if you're having this issue many others have too.

Also, it will be a pain in the ass but the dmv may be able to be of assistance as well.

A good locksmith should be able to do it. It's a pain in the ass, but I've seen it done. My first job in high school was with a locksmith. They have to take the blank and jiggle it around in the ignition to get the pins to mark the blank, then file down by hand. Time consuming and likely expensive considering the amount of work.

Christ... People making this harder than it is with molds and everything else. lol

In a car that age it's just a simple mechanical lock/switch. No chips or computer interlocks or reprogramming or any of that. Just replace the whole damn lock cylinder with a new one and new key.

How much do you want for it?
I'll buy it without the key as long as you have clear title and a reasonable price.

I'm sure your heart is in the right place but sometimes, just sometimes you need to not talk.

A clear title has absolutely nothing to do with having a key made.

Hollywood makes a "mold" to reproduce a key.

How many "antique car dealers" do you believe are in the US? It's not a skeleton key.

Why on earth would you believe that just because an anonymous poster on this forum is having this problem that others would be as well?

The DMV does not now, nor ever has had anything to do with keys to automobiles.

OP.......call a locksmith. Any locksmith. They can come directly to where the car is located and rekey the ignition (which means you should probably have them rekey the door locks so they match) or even possibly cut you a new key that matches the lock currently in your dashboard.

It's not rocket science.

Um Vexxxed, how about you take your own advice and "not talk" you pompous douchebag.

A clear title shows you own the vehicle. I could call and ask them to make a key for the Porsche 911 sitting across from me and tell them it's mine and drive off in it. In general, the title is not kept in the vehicle and hence not easily stolen like a registration.

Antique car dealers and restorers deal with this all the time; they would know how to get around the problem, ie, re-keying.

The OP DID check with locksmiths and they refused to help. How about you try reading and comprehending, I guess it IS rocket science for you.

DOUCHE

A locksmith won't do anything without proof of the clear title. So yes, it does mean a lot. It happened with my mustang back in 2011.

"Clear title" has nothing to do with it. Many if not most people don't even have the title to their car and it is not "clear." The bank owns the car and holds the title.

What they may want is some reasonable proof that you're the owner. A title and your ID would provide that as would easier things like a current registration.

In this case the OP needs none of this because THEY CAN JUST CHANGE THE FUCKING LOCK CYLINDER FOR ABOUT $10. lol

I'm sorry. I spoke out of turn.

If I had a background that included multiple contacts with local law enforcement then yes, I'd probably have to show ownership of the vehicle.

OP is talking about a vehicle that presumably is registered in his name.

Not a neighbors car that offended him in some way and simply wants to fuck with it.

Stick to makeup tips and having children out of wedlock, please.

The adults are talking now.
