Need to fix a kettle
Posted by: lamp ()
Date: May 07, 2009 09:05PM

I bought my wife a specialized kettle. Unfortunately, it has a leak where the spout meets the body. The kettle is stainless steel. The guy that makes 'em said to apply a little glue around the joint and inhale at the spout to glue the seam. However, I've been unable to find a non-toxic glue that binds metal, is waterproof, and can withstand high heat. Any ideas? Maybe something other then glue (silcon?)

TIA

Maybe ship it to the guy that makes them so he can fix it?

lol. Dunno, buy another kettle I guess :) But I wouldn't trust a glue or other kind of adhesive on a metal object that exceeds boiling-point temperatures, though I am sure there are plenty of epoxies or something that would theoretically work.

Sounds like a job for JB Weld. You can buy it at Wal-mart in the automotive section.

I'm not positive it's food safe. But they would be able to answer that I'm sure... [www.jbweld.net]

"Like metal, J-B WELD can be formed, drilled, ground, tapped, machined, filled, sanded, and painted. It stays pliable for about 30 minutes after mixing, sets in 4-6 hours, and cures fully in 15-24 hours. It's water-proof; petroleum-, chemical-, and acid-resistent; resists shock, vibration, and extreme temperature fluctuations, and withstands temperatures up to 500° F. J-B WELD is super strong, non-toxic, and safe to use. Before it sets, you can clean up with soap and water"

Q: Is J-B Weld toxic?

A: No. J-B Weld is non-toxic. However, we do not recommend consuming the product.

: What is the tensile strength of J-B Weld and J-B Kwik?

A: J-B Weld has a tensile strength of 3,960 psi

*

Q: What color is J-B Weld when it cures? Is it clear?

A: J-B Weld cures to a very dark gray (steel-like) color.

Q: Is J-B Weld resistant to water and/or gasoline?

A: When fully cured, J-B Weld is completely resistant to water, gasoline, and about every other petroleum product or automotive chemical. For wet-surface or submerged water or gasoline repairs, see our J-B Stik or Waterweld product information.

Q: How much heat can J-B Weld withstand?

A: J-B Weld (Part # 8265-S, 8265, and 8280) can withstand a constant temperature of 500 degrees F. The maximum temperature threshold is approximately 600 degrees F for a short term (10 minutes).

This may be a long shot, but google some artist guilds in the area who do welding. This sounds like a small "spot job" and any of the artisans who make welded crafts will have all the tools and materials to do the job.

You might also want to call the Reston and McLean Community Centers and ask if the arts 'n crafts event planners can put you in touch with a welder.

I know a number of silversmiths, but the technique is different and I don't think they can help you.
