In a one-day bench trial yesterday, Judge Herbert C. Gill Jr. of Colonial Heights Circuit Court found Brenes guilty of taking indecent liberties while maintaining a supervisory relationship with the victim and carnal knowledge of a juvenile. The maximum sentence for each felony is five years, Bray said. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 6.

"Parents expect teachers to not go over the line and into any inappropriate relationship with their children," Bray said. In Brenes' case, he said, "the court will hold him accountable."

Brenes' attorney, Neil Kuchinsky, said his client was an extremely lonely man who believed he was being seduced by the 17-year-old. E-mails they exchanged show mutual expression of love, he said.
