ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A 17-year-old boy drowned Wednesday afternoon at an apartment complex in Attleboro.
According to the Bristol Country District Attorney’s Office, the teenager has been identified as Ibrahim Iqbal of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Officials said Iqbal was swimming at the Crystal Village apartments on Commonwealth Avenue when at about 3:30 p.m. he had to be pulled from the indoor pool.
Attleboro Police Sgt. Ron Goyette said they received a medical call from staff that someone was in distress in the deep end of the pool.
“It was a call that a man was in the pool, at the bottom of the pool,” he explained. “We responded and AFD responded, the Attleboro Fire Department, and they transported him.”
Iqbal was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, but could not be saved and was pronounced dead around 4 p.m.
“Absolutely horrible. It’s mortifying,” said Anette Petty, a neighbor. “And he’s young, it’s terrible.”
A statement from the DA’s office stated:
The initial investigation into this incident has revealed that Mr. Iqbal, who was visiting relatives at the apartment complex this week, had been swimming laps in the large indoor heated pool. He was accompanied at the pool area by his cousin, who was not swimming with him. At some point after swimming laps, Mr. Iqbal was swimming to the bottom of the nine foot deep end of the pool, touching the bottom, and coming back up for air. He apparently did this several times. During one of the trips to the bottom of the pool, Mr. Iqbal did not come back up for air.
At this time the teen’s death appears to be accidental. Police continue to investigate and the Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.
