Legal to Smoke Pot in DC Tomorrow- Republicans Set to Block

Two powerful House Republicans late Tuesday warned D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser not to move forward with legalizing marijuana in the nation’s capital and they warned of stiff federal retribution if the city’s chief executive did not yield.

The letter came on the same day that Bowser declared that a voter-approved measure to legalize pot would become law in the city at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and the letter set the stage for a dramatic final 24 hours before that deadline.

“If you decide to move forward tomorrow with the legalization of marijuana in the District, you will be doing so in knowing and willful violation of the law,” read the letter signed by U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chair of the appropriations subcommittee that handles the D.C. budget.

"In Your Home". It's still illegal to sell marijuana in the District or to smoke in public. And of course, federal laws apply on federal property such as the Mall, Rock Creek Park, and many other locales.

Typical hypocrite GOP behavior. They're all for states rights (yes I know technically DC isn't a state) until its something they don't agree with then its time to sweep in and intervene. Reminds me of Bush Jr. and the Terry Shiavo case.

Gop fascists hate freedom and love for profit incarceration over petty crimes.

Why does the GOP even exist? One thing's for sure -- Scott Walker doesn't know.

Agree, but really both parties are awful these days.

That's just what DC needs, a bunch of stoned nogs running around.

Wait......that's what they have already.

And good luck to the cops trying to enforce any of this horseshit.

Not true. Over 80% of the yes votes came from west of the river. So majority white areas are responsible for this.

Time for the Feds to stop taking away the right to home rule for DC. The citizens voted to legalize cannabis and the city should be able to have a meeting to discuss it and set regulations. Congress has blocked that so now it will be legal and unregulated. This will lead to people growing for their own use and to give away and 'clubs' where you pay to belong and cannabis is provided for no fee.

The congressman from NC has no business telling the people of DC they cannot self govern in the same way every other state does - its bs.

I'm impressed, a thread on FFXU with level headed discussion and common sense!

Washington, DC is NOT a state.

Would you care to restate your position in light of this breaking news?

I hope the Mayor calls every bluff. They issue her warrant for arrest, has the greatest Prep walk in history. Refuses to post bail, and whips the entire national media in a frenzy....it will be amazing.

Most people of voting age east of the river lost their right to vote years ago.

Youthful offenses do not carry forward. Five of the District's eight wards have between 50,000 and 60,000 registered voters. Wards 7 and 8 are among those.

That's true. We can't forget most violent crime in DC is committed by 13-16 yr old BLACKS

The law says you cannot smoke pot in public. It's unclear if a private club would be considered in public. In Spain you cannot sell pot but there are clubs where you can smoke and you receive a certain amount of pot as a member. You are paying a membership fee not buying the pot.
