Obama Wants the Internet to Remain Neutral - Ted Cruz and The GOP are Outraged
Posted by: Neutral Internet ()

Obama's detailed position on the issue of "net neutrality," a platform in his presidential campaign in 2008, represented a rare step by the White House into the policy-setting of an independent agency.

It came after nearly 4 million comments flooded the Federal Communications Commission after Chairman Tom Wheeler formally proposed new Internet traffic rules in May.

Shares of major cable companies, which connect many Americans to the Internet, slid on the news. Time Warner Cable Inc was down 3.4 percent; its planned purchaser, Comcast Corp, fell 3.o percent; and Cablevision Systems Corp was 1.8 percent lower. Verizon Communications Inc was down less than 0.1 percent.

Comcast was by far the most actively traded stock on U.S. markets, with more than 35 million shares changing hands by 11:16 a.m. EST.

Public internet groups have vigorously opposed Wheeler's proposal, which prohibited Internet service providers from blocking any content, but allowed deals where content providers would pay ISPs to ensure smooth delivery of traffic.

Today, President Obama came out in support of net neutrality, asking the FCC to reclassify broadband as a public utility. This would help stop ISPs from creating "internet slow lanes" and throttling customers. Senator Ted Cruz—who accepted campaign funds from Comcast, one of those ISPs—thinks this is a bad idea.

Ted Cruz and his team have the facts wrong about net neutrality. Obama specifically said the government would NOT be in charge of pricing: "I believe the FCC should reclassify consumer broadband service under Title II of the Telecommunications Act — while at the same time forbearing from rate regulation and other provisions less relevant to broadband services." Emphasis mine. Government will not rate regulate and saying so is lying.

This is a dangerous idea because Cruz is one of the most powerful people in Congress. He's on the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet. This is a man people give their attention.

And he's conflating a hatred with anything Obama stands for with a hatred for this particular stance, which is a rational and potentially bipartisan solution to a problem that affects everyone across the aisle (or at least everyone across the aisle without ties to the ISPs).

Even though this is good for EVERYONE and makes complete sense - I bet a million buck not one GOP fuck on this site can just comment on how Obama is right about this issue and that they support him.

NOT ONE of our regular registered rightwing trolls will just accept that this will save them money and get on board. They would really pay MORE just to not admit this from Obama makes sense.

Why do libs think everything should be free?

Net neutraility is a stupid fucking thing to do, unless you're a socialist pig or an entitled lib that thinks he should not work, draw welfare and live on Park Avenue, NY, NY.

You dumb fucks. Net neutraility is socialism and the USA is a free market society even as much as you libs hate that fact.

These corporations like Comcast (who haven't created hundreds of thousands of jobs in the lib mind) have invested billions into internet infrastructure. It would suck otherwise and will suck big time like OBUMBLEFUCK CARE and everything else government touches if it were to be "neutral"

Just leave the USA already libs.

Ted Cruz's Net Neutrality Take Isn't Just Dumb, It's Dangerous

Kate Knibbs
Filed to: Net Neutrality

Today, President Obama came out in support of net neutrality, asking the FCC to reclassify broadband as a public utility. This would help stop ISPs from creating "internet slow lanes" and throttling customers. Senator Ted Cruz—who accepted campaign funds from telcom giant Comcast—immediately fired back with this incendiary tweet:

Comparing net neutrality to Obamacare is basically the most insulting parallel a conservative senator can make—half buzzword, half slur, and 100% cynical.

Cruz's communications director got in on the action, too:

This is a disingenuous, chickenshit political maneuver and nothing more.

Ted Cruz and his team have the facts wrong about net neutrality. Obama specifically said the government would NOT be in charge of pricing: "I believe the FCC should reclassify consumer broadband service under Title II of the Telecommunications Act — while at the same time forbearing from rate regulation and other provisions less relevant to broadband services."

Emphasis mine. Government will not rate regulate and saying so is lying (or maybe they didn't actually read the statement?).

Cruz is one of the most powerful people in Congress, and he's considering a presidential run in 2016. He's on the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet, which handles internet governance and FCC oversight. This is a man people give their attention, which makes this statement dangerous as well as disingenuous.

Cruz is rallying his supporters by denigrating the Obama administration's politics. He is conflating a hatred with anything Obama stands for with a hatred for this particular stance, which is a rational and potentially bipartisan solution to a problem that affects everyone across the aisle (or at least everyone across the aisle without ties to the ISPs).

Obama is not saying the government should wrest control from private companies and start administering the Internet itself. He is trying to keep the Internet as an equalizer. There is no need for political polarization here.

But political polarization we're gonna get. Cruz isn't alone in trying to characterize a push to protect consumers as a socialist—or at the least, bureaucratic—nightmare. Broadband for America had this to say:

President Barack Obama's endorsement of 1930's era Title II classification would lead to unprecedented government interference in the Internet and would hurt consumers and innovation. Further, for the President to issue this directive is a threat to the independence of the FCC itself. By vastly expanding the regulatory bureaucracy over the internet, the administration is turning its back on 20 years of bipartisan consensus that has allowed the Internet to flourish. The President's approach would threaten millions of jobs and a diverse array of stakeholders including, labor, civil-rights organization, and tech companies, who have long advocated for a far more restrained approach.

The characterization that reclassifying the internet as a utility will hamper innovation and introduce a byzantine influx of administrative red tape is wrong, and it obscures the actual issue at hand here: Net neutrality protection is what is best for consumers. It will not choke off chances for innovation; it will ensure that innovators from across the socioeconomic spectrum will have a more level playing field when it comes to receiving information.

ISPs are moving away from net neutrality in their attempts to throttle and lay out premium traffic lanes. This is one of those attacks on our freedoms you hear about on Fox News.

The government will not determine the speed of the internet, it will simply stop ISPs from slowing service down. Obama is asking private companies to treat their customers fairly; there is no part of his plan that involves the government seizing control of providers.

Freedom is a word that gets thrown around a lot in politics. Conservatives believe big government curtails freedoms. This can happen, and it is important to interrogate when and why the government creates and enforces new legislation. If the FCC authorizes the internet fast lane rules, the government will be stifling innovation and hurting its citizens. But the government is not the only force that can constrict freedom.

Corporations can be just as tyrannical as corrupt federal administrations, and we have been in danger of ISPs controlling and corroding the flow of information through the internet in a way that would be detrimental to everybody. This is not a case of government scope creep. This is a case of the executive branch of the government taking a stand in an attempt to preserve an endangered freedom.

The only thing net neutrality would slow down is the speed at which you're getting fucked, and that's something everyone in Congress should agree on.

What libs did to heal the insurance made it 75% more expensive, with less care and forced everybody to pay.
What libs would do to the internet is the same and the infrastructure would be like healthcare.org plus the added taxes would make it unaffordable (like Obumblefuckcare) and they will force EVERYBODY to pay for it!

FUCK YOU libs!

Oh, and for you lib welfare fucks. ISP's already offer inexpensive plans for you assholes that refuse to work.

This law is a Trojan Horse, that supposedly protects consumers, but is actually just an excuse for the federal government to take control of and regulate the internet in the same way they regulate radio and television.

The net neutrality vision for government regulation of the Internet began with the work of Robert McChesney, a University of Illinois communications professor who founded the liberal lobby Free Press in 2002.

Mr. McChesney's agenda?

"At the moment, the battle over network neutrality is not to completely eliminate the telephone and cable companies," he told the website SocialistProject in 2009. "But the ultimate goal is to get rid of the media capitalists in the phone and cable companies and to divest them from control."

A year earlier, Mr. McChesney wrote in the Marxist journal Monthly Review that "any serious effort to reform the media system would have to necessarily be part of a revolutionary program to overthrow the capitalist system itself."

Mr. McChesney told me in an interview that some of his comments have been "taken out of context."

He acknowledged that he is a socialist and said he was "hesitant to say I'm not a Marxist."

Net Neutrality Means the Government Controls the Internet
Net neutrality is not about neutrality - it's about having the government control and monitor
what carriers are allowed to transmit, to whom, and at what rates with specific and
immediate benefits to bandwidth hogs like youtube and specific and immediate limitations
on premium services contracts like those Apple put in place with AT&T to give their iPhone
a performance advantage.

Net Neutrality Will Stifle Competition, and Thus Guarantee Higher Rates for Internet Service
When you're running a company with a few billion a year in revenues, spending a couple of million on regulatory
compliance is a triviality, but because it's likely to be a serious multiple of the first year's expected revenue
for a local start-up, that start-up is prevented.[/i]

Why Google Is Spending Millions to Pimp Net Neutrality
Put this stuff together and you have the reason the biggest companies in major
markets generally tend to favor heavy handed regulation - and therefore why
Google, among others, has spent tens of millions pushing for "net neutrality"
regulations in the United States.

Obama is a terrorist. That is a fact.
If Obama says the Bears are going to win, they lose 55-14 and let Rogers set an all time record of 6 TD's in the first half. That is a fact.

I can't believe that I'm reading anti-net neutrality garbage on FFXU. Net neutrality is treating all data, no matter source or carrier, the same i.e. not giving preferential or sub-standard treatment. Period, full stop. What Obama and pretty much every other sane internet user wants is just that. They want the internet to stay the same and not to be changed into a tiered nightmare as opposed to the open nightmare it is now. Goddamn, is everything a socialist conspiracy to you nutjobs?

And lib hates America pretty much just said he doesn't like the idea because Obama does. Which is why when Obama refers to America as "this great nation" he so vehemently disagrees.

I don't buy this at all....

Libs only want to ban/mandate - they are never fighting for freedom...

Obama's failed miserably at everything - nothing he does is in the interest of Americans (ie his obsession with amnesty when Americans don't want it)

Why did Obama appoint a telecom lobbyist to FCC chair if he was so worried about 'neutrality'?

So ICANN is about to be shifted to some global entity and the FCC is taking over the ISP business?

We're about to get screwed again....bad

Libs are easily fooled. They hear Obama say he wants net neutrality and they stop thinking.

Do Libiots really believe that having our government control and treat the internet as a public utility will work to keep the net neutral?

Poor dumb libiots with their cute little pictures! They think the problem is we don't understand what net neutrality is.

Well the government is in charge of the VA the IRS among other failed or overreaching agencies.

The government also told us the cost of healthcare would go down.

More selective reading by the conservatives on FFXU.

Conservatives are quick to judge. They hear Obama say he wants net neutrality and the know they don't want it too.

The alternative, letting coporations retain control, won't. And control is bad descriptor, it's more like "keep things as they are".

More "the government will be in charge, so I don't want it". Let's get rid of the DoD because the government is in charge. Everything the government is in charge of is bad.

I love it. Cables companies are owned by big Hollywood, which are mega-contributors to democrats, especially Obama. Comcast has donated millions to his two campaigns. Now our clueless el presidente is fucking them over, just like he's fucked over everyone and everything else in this country. Karma, she is a bitch.

Obamacare brought about shitty change. Turning the Internet over to a government agency is also change (not, as you spewed, keeping it the same). And almost certainly, another shitty change. Only stupid facists think government control over things like health care and information sharing is a good thing. Facists come from both parties, but the democrat facists are like the ones leaders like Hilter, Mao, Stalin, putin and Obama use. The republicn facists are the ones that get rich off it all.

It's change to keep it the same, or keep it the same to have it changed. Either change ownership or allow ISPs to block/suppress data as they please.

Liberals never want to let the free markets work it out. They demand government intervention in every fucking aspect of their miserable lives if it causes over 1 second of any kind of discomfort. No one is going to die if Internet companies throttle data to private citizens on a service they are buying from the Internet companies. The true solution for this is to break up the monopolies that local and state governments have created and let every ISP compete in every area of the county. This will create better service that is cheaper. But it will take a few years to realize the benefits and you sorry-ass faggots can't wait two minutes for your microwave pizza to cook without breaking into a sweat.

American, from land of the free to land of the faggots in 10 short years.

I think there is more going on than the general public is aware of...perhaps corporate bickering going on behind the scenes...

There are so many bigger problems that needs addressing - why is net neutrality front and center now??

I highly doubt this is just an effort to keep the internet 'neutral' - watch us get screwed....we always do...

Congestion is and always will be a problem with the internet, just as with any other network.

Whether you are talking about railway networks, electrical networks, traditional
telephone networks, or the network of roads that runs through your neighborhood,
engineers somewhere are aware of the usage patterns and are constantly attempting
to maximize load and capacity in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

Prioritization of network traffic is not an aberration but a central feature of
the internet designed into the network since its inception.

In 1987, when a spike in traffic driven by the advent of personal computers
caused congestion on an early version of the internet, system operators
reprogrammed routers to give traffic from the network’s original dedicated user
terminals higher priority than PC traffic until additional bandwidth could be created.

In 2014, the congestion problem arises from massive traffic growth in data-rich
video content.

The issue, then, is how to handle video-induced traffic growth in a world where
(i) the internet does not have infinite capacity, and (ii) providing greater
bandwidth requires huge capital investment, eg, Verizon’s multi-billion dollar
FiOS network.

Put another way, the issue is whether to permit smaller networks, with less
capital and less infrastructure, to maximize load and capacity in the most
efficient and cost-effective way possible, or to force all networks to spend
billions to increase their bandwidth.

EXAMPLE 1: Wireless broadband service provided by Amtrak to passengers on its
Acela trains limits file downloads to 10 MB and blocks access to streaming media.

Why?

Amtrak wants to maximize the amount of onboard bandwidth available to *all*
passengers, rather than allow a *small* group of users to consume all of the
available bandwidth to the detriment of everyone else.

EXAMPLE 2: AT&T, with less bandwidth than cable companies or Verizon’s
$23 billion fiber-optic FiOS network, reserves bandwidth for its own video offerings
and gives its video traffic priority over other traffic.

Why?

These practices allow AT&T to avoid spending the additional $17-$23 billion that
it would cost to deploy fiber-based solutions like FiOS.

Today, if you don't like AT&T's approach, you can do business with another company.

On the other hand...

What is the "Net Neutrality" solution to internet congestion?
The net neutrality "solution" would be FCC-imposed regulations that would *force*
AT&T to spend that $17-$23 billion, or go out of business.

The net neutrality solution will put smaller network providers out of business,
and leave the field in the hands of a few "giants."

After the breakup of the Ma Bell monopoly on telephone service (a monopoly which,
btw, was sanctioned and protected by the FCC), the telecommunications revolution
roared to life. For the vast majority of consumers, the breakup of the Ma Bell
monopoly was a very good thing.

The effect of net neutrality, however, would be like REVERSING the breakup of Ma Bell.

The multiple players currently allowed to exist in a non-regulated environment
(i.e., AT&T and FiOS), will become a thing of the past.

For sixty years, the FCC not only stifled, but effectively banned competition as it
nurtured a Bell telephone monopoly -- stifling the growth of telecommunications
for years (eg, cell phones and other complements or alternatives to traditional
landline services).

Pass net neutrality, and say hello to the bad old days of FCC over-regulation and
control, not to mention the inevitability of the FCC becoming the federal censor
of the internet.

Gee whiz, that just sounds so...sensible. That is, until you think about it for a minute or two.

Let's take the 'network of roads that runs through your neighborhood' example.

What a concept like net neutrality would do for a road network is ensure that all drivers have equal access to the available roads. Without a net neutrality-like concept, the neighborhood roads become tolled. Drivers who can (and are willing to) pay more get preferred access. Those who can't (or won't) are fucked. Say that whomever controls the roads doesn't like the Denton family over on Spruce Court. Tough titty for the Dentons, because they have no 'right' to use the roads and so they're screwed.

The opponents of net neutrality are greedy corporation and their sycophantic lap dogs.

Perhaps you need some reading help. I am speaking to your analogy of the internet to public roads, you know the one with the Dentons.

Perhaps you can provide a better example that doesn't contrast public roads paid for and maintained by taxpayer funds and the internet.

Which is not. Perhaps what you mean to say is you believe the government should strip control and ownership of the various parts that make up the internet like some banana republic dictator nationalizes private companies.

Then lets call it net neutrality to make everyone feel good about it.

The Internet's Owners

So who actually owns the Internet? There are two answers to this question:
1.Nobody
2.Lots of people

If you think of the Internet as a unified, single entity, then no one owns it. There are organizations that determine the Internet's structure and how it works, but they don't have any ownership over the Internet itself. No government can lay claim to owning the Internet, nor can any company. The Internet is like the telephone system -- no one owns the whole thing.

From another point of view, thousands of people and organizations own the Internet. The Internet consists of lots of different bits and pieces, each of which has an owner. Some of these owners can control the quality and level of access you have to the Internet. They might not own the entire system, but they can impact your Internet experience.

That's why we need net neutrality.

Are you really this stupid or is this just an act? Do you not understand that much of what makes up the internet are privately owned hardware and software systems?

See the explanation above as well, although I would add without any of the privately held bits and pieces, there would be nothing but a set of protocols.

Wrong.

Internet access is not free. Absent the imposition of net neutrality, internet access costs will stay as they are -- with no separate toll for "neighborhood roads," and a *possible* toll for "superhighway access," depending on your service provider.

On the other hand, if net neutrality *IS* imposed, it will:

1) Impose a toll on *all* "roads" (both "neighborhood" and "superhighway") that will pay for the increased cost of doing business and/or the tax that will arise from net neutrality regulations.

2) Diminish competition among networks by forcing out the smaller providers who can't afford to comply with the increased bandwidth requirements that net neutrality will require.

a) Less competition will mean higher costs for consumers.

b) Less competition will mean less innovation.

Truth_B_Told Wrote:

Utter bullshit.

In fact, the PROPONENTS of net neutrality are monster corporations like Google who want to solidify their control of the market by discouraging new start-ups:

When you're running a company with a few billion a year in revenues, spending a
couple of million on regulatory compliance is a triviality, but because it's likely
to be a serious multiple of the first year's expected revenue for a local start-up,
that start-up is prevented.

Source: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/murphy/why-net-neutralitys-not-neutral-at-all/1806

Imposing more regs simply ensures that the big boys with the lawyers remain entrenched since they will be the only ones with enough cash to game the system of new regulations.

A day doesn't go by that I don't hear from some upstart power company looking to lower my cost and improve my service. And some of the new innovation from these power companies. Awesome!

I also want my ISP to bill me like the power companies, with all those taxes laid out on top of everything.

Chances are Truth b told has never seen a utility bill.

But...but... How else can conserva-tards compete, other than lying?

Well, of course. Hatred of President Obama is the lens through which these conserva-tard miscreants view the world. They're scum.

Conserva-tards!

Obama could be handing out gold profits and Ted Cruz would be saying he still hate Obama.

Cruz is just another Texas idiot politician.

How apropos. Soros is the diabolical evil that funded the push to implement government control of the internet.

How about comparing it to Smart Meters, GerBear?

Sold to the public as a way to locate power outages faster yet used to control your power needs without your say so.

That's pretty much Net Neutrality in a nutshell isn't it?

If everyone can't get ultra fast internet all the time, no one will be able to.

If you aren't using yours, they'll give it to a needy neighbor.

Net Neutrality means lowering the bar to the level of the lowest common denominator. Not raising the service level for people that chose a cheaper carrier.

Sure it is.

Wait until the fine people of OutinTheMiddleofNowhere start to complain that they don't have access to fiber cabling.

And watch FIOS in the DMV area be informed they have to dial back their speed to come in line with "Net Neutrality".

That is exactly what is happening right now with Dominion Power and their Smart Meters. It's also what happened in the past when Fairfax Water took control and flat out outlawed new and old wells in most of the county.

Now we have no choice who to buy either of those two "utilities" from. They're self formed monopolies assisted into place by government oversight.
