eesh, I know we're enemies here, but I have a question.

What kind of shot gun was Kyle Reese using? And what kind of stopping power would it have realistically have had?

Could it have punched something like that through a window?

I have you now.

Unless it was loaded with tungsten buckshot, I doubt any kind of shotgun shell would have that kind of effect on a solid-metal killing machine from the future.

Also... That is what you're wondering about in "Terminator?" Nothing else strikes you as implausible, even by their own standards?

I always go to the movie firearms database when I'm curious about a weapon in a movie. http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Terminator,_The#Shotguns

Kyle is using an Ithaca 37 with high capacity tube.

As far as ammunition used against a machine, I would think that a 3" slug would be adequate.

Ideally, I think an FN P90 or HK MP7 would be preferable in order to penetrate the armor of a machine. These were not around in 1984 though.

Fun trivia: The props guy that put the laser sight on the Terminator's pistol went on to found Crimson Trace grips.

Blessed are the murderous.

According to my quick and shoddy internet research, a cubic inch of steel (what the machines are made out of at the very least) weighs about .28 lbs. A cubic inch of water (which is what we're mostly made out of) is about .03 lbs. So a Terminator frame weighs roughly 9 1/2 times what a human of comparable height weighs.

No. I don't think a shotgun would work.

Oh. And they're made of "hyperalloy," which isn't a thing you can find the weight of. So I imagine it's bitchin' heavy.

You should be wondering how they sent the T1000 back through time since it didn't have a fleshy exterior.

In Terminator 2 there was a deleted scene that addressed how the T1000 was sent back. It was a scene in the future that showed the resistance reaching the time travel device, and seeing the evidence of the two Terminators being sent back. One was a regular pod for any humanoid, the other had remnants of a biological cocoon that the T1000 was enclosed in before being sent through.

I'm not buying that. That explanation ends with "I can't find a source for it other than the Terminator wikia."

It also doesn't explain why they don't just send back nuclear bombs using the same method. Granted, SkyNet's military planning is pretty bad, but even they should remember that "bombs blow stuff up." It's the first thing they tried.

The original terminator could have self destructed himself with his own powerpack when he was close to John Connor. Stupid fucking machines.

They could but if they kill Miles Dyson, Skynet dies too.

Ok, I can accept that. You can't take the chance of accidentally killing someone you need to exist in the future.

Still, sending it back naked and having it steal weapons so it can attack her in the middle of a crowded room is not the best idea for a computer designed to run the U.S. military.

"Skynet, we need a pinpoint strike on this supply depot to cut off the enemy's support without injuring our nearby troops. Can you do that?"

"AFFIRMATIVE. COORDINATES RECEIVED. CARPET-BOMBING RUNS ENGAGED."

But wait... Dyson said he'd just quit, but they said that wasn't good enough because the arm and processor needed to be destroyed. So a small nuclear explosion is fine as long as it doesn't happen within the range of the Cyberdyne building.

Assuming Skynet can calculate complicated things like "range" and "safe distance."

Truth be told, it doesn't matter what Dyson does or doesn't do. If you send back a terminator, then all the advanced tech you'll ever want already exists - no need to have Dyson reverse engineer anything.

So here's what you do. Send a terminator back to 1950, tell it to open a tech company that produces startlingly-advanced technology at reasonable prices. Find some human dupes who'll be happy to collect the several nobel prizes for advances in physics.

Invest some of the money in fast food joints and in the early 80s, give Sarah Conner a decent job in Omaha. Pay her enough that she has lots of kids (and not with Kyle Reese), gets fat, and never becomes a super ninja. John grows up a spoiled brat and ends up working at Skynet Burgers.

This is the problem with time travel - if you're smart, it pretty much solves all problems.

Miles Dyson. LOL. No nog has ever invented anything outside of Hollywood make-believe. That was the most unbelievable part of T2.
