We Are Cowards
Posted by: Govt is the Problem ()
Date: March 25, 2009 03:57PM

A reason why we should let the economy fail:

It is our generation that should take the hit. It is us who should feel the pain of the collapse. We did it to ourselves by standing idly by while the government and its many friends in the banking sector got us into this mess. And don’t forget the orgy of spending and personal debt that the population engaged in, encouraged every step of the way by the government’s easy-money policies. This all happened on our watch, but instead of taking our medicine, we the people are now encouraging the government in its many efforts to reinflate the bubble, fully aware all we are really doing is trying to shift the mess onto the backs of our children, and their children, and probably their children’s children. What a bunch of cowards we are.

You can call all of this quantitative easing if you wish; I call it institutionalized cowardice walking hand in glove with mob psychology.

Or you can call it “change.”

I'm not a Baby Boomer. My generation didn't run up this debt. Cut Social Security and Medicare if you want. But leave everything else.

It is the Baby Boomers.

You voted for Republicans. You actively supported it.

Just because someone offers you something, doesn't mean you should take it. I'm not swimming in debt.

Locian- And I don't vote either. If anyone doesn't have the right to complain it is those people who actively participated in the system.

You're a libertarian. You would rather see a plane who's engines were on fire crash then safely land in the hudson.

Shadow- IMO it is the exact opposite. If you voted you can't complain about the results. You asked for it.

No, because those that voted are trying to do something for the country. Those that sit on their asses doing little more than bitching about things are merely a waste. If you couldn't be bothered to get out and choose, shut up. Every vote does make a difference, the last several elections are proof of that. If more of you lazy non-voters would get some balls and support a candidate, maybe things could be better.

But if you're just going to bitch about the end result when you made no effort to do anything about it, you're the bigger problem to society.

And just because I voted doesn't mean my choice was elected. Plenty of times, they are not. Doesn't mean I shouldn't vote, may mean I need to talk to more people before the election and garner more support for my candidate though.

Shadow- I have heard all the reasons many times, so you're not alone.

As for me, I have come to the conclusion that change from within is impossible.

So it then becomes a choice between violent resistance/revolution... or... passive and peaceful withdrawal while inevitable collapse continues to unfold.

To each his own. I don't need to change your mind. The collapse will eventually happen.

I would kindly ask that you please try to keep the discussion civil though. Thanks

If the people who had voted didn't vote, we would have been under the boot of a dictator decades ago. Thank your lucky stars some Americans take the right to vote seriously.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree at this point that America is getting everything it deserves. We are a shallow, materialistic population who care more about what Britney Spears is doing than what's going on in the real world.

These crooked politicians that everyone bitches about are accurate reflections of what our society has become. We, not as a country or a nation, but we as individuals, have failed. By sitting by and thinking it was not our job to hold accountable the democrats and republicans and the media, we have failed.

It's easy for us to sit around and say that the democrats are ruining us or that the republicans already ruined us, but what did any of you do? What did I do? Nothing. Sure, we can stand in line and vote for the next group of assholes that are going to make our lives difficult, but that doesn't count for shit, and our inaction has encouraged the predicament we're facing today.

My life is unaffected because I work for and earn everything I have. All the politics in the world have no impact on a guy like me. But for those of you that actually care about it, stop crying for a second and ask yourselves what the fuck you actually did that entitles you to a say in how the country should be run? Being a citizen and voting is not enough, but you've been led to believe it is, and you are powerless to do anything else.

I am ashamed to say that I agree with a troll, but it's true. We, as individuals, not as a nation, are cowards.

Cowards is the wrong description...mentally lazy....self absorbed...but not cowards. Locian...we could get off our fat asses and use our constitutional right to free speech...petitioning our elected officials. How about donating money to a politician?

At least once a month I write our senate and congressional reps and tell them what I think they should be doing. I donate money...and time (I need to donate more time) to politics.

We can do more then just write on here and vote!

No. In modernized nations, the days of peasants revolting against the government a la the French Revolution are never going to be repeated. However, sometimes things get so big that there's nothing left to do other than collapse. You can see it on Wall Street, and you can see it in the collapse of stars into black holes in distant galaxies. How are we so presumptuous to think that a government or country is immune?

People are naturally divisive; check out "Lord of the Flies" or "Survivor" or look out your window if you need proof. More people equals more problems equals a greater need for someone to fix those problems. Our government is asked to fix those problems, and given the authority to do so. When you make the rules, you are above them. At the rate we're going, it is inevitable that we will either collapse or be put in a position where a citizen's life is issued to him for the good of all.

Maybe not in my lifetime, maybe not in five hundred years, but no country or government or empire in history has lasted forever. There is a desperation in the air that just makes me think it will be sooner rather than later.

So you send them money and what they view as another piece of trash. You are not only doing nothing, but you're making it easier for them to do whatever it is that they do that we don't know about. Are you reading the laws they write? The budgets they pass? Do you scrutinize their corporate affiliations for proof (not that you'd know what that is) of corruption?

I sent a letter to George Allen about an issue I actually care about: net neutrality. I expressed my desire as a resident of Virginia that he vote against any legislation that would infringe on the freedom of the internet. I received a letter that basically said, "Thank you for writing to me, I take the issue very seriously, we do need to take care of them internets, so I'll do what's best."

So, I responded, and politely pointed why I thought he should vote a certain way, and that I respected his willingness to listen to what his constituents have to say. He sent me back the same fucking letter.

Disgusted, I crumpled it up and realized that short of hostage taking, violence, or a bigger bribe than the other guy, they're going to do what they want to do now that they're in office, fuck you. I'm not into hostage taking or violence, and I don't have that much money, so I may as well just wipe my ass with my letters rather than waste the postage.

Either do I. Hey! We agree!

I believe in passive withdrawal and non-participation. To me, a vote (regardless of who it is for) only serves to legitimize the State. Voting makes you complicit in any crime the Govt goes on to commit.

Vince at a party:

Vince enters party and immediately starts counting heads. He determines the crowd exceeds the allowed number of bodies for the room size and calls the fire department. Then, suspicious that trans-fats have been hidden in the hors’dourves, Vince sneaks a few samples into an expensive but environmentally safe alternative plastic bag to be sent off to the FDA.

Suddenly, the DJ cranks up the music. Vince, looking almost epileptic, wildly attempts to cover his ears and almost drops his specimen bag. He steadies himself, rifles through his pocketbook, locates his decibel gauge and notes the excessive volume in an email to the Health Department.

He walks over to a corner where some young college students, in hushed tones, are discussing oppression under the big leftist government. Hearing their blasphemy, Vince takes their pictures with his pink flowered camera pen. At this point, Vince is so unraveled, he runs into the bathroom, to collect his thoughts.

While using the toilet, he imagines how he will help the government shut down this dangerous party. He flushes the toilet but is surprised that everything goes down on one flush. What? This toilet isn't a government approved 1.6-gal. toilet? Looking for his pink pen, he slips, falls head first into the toilet and gets stuck. Luckily, the fire department has just arrived and they pull Vince out. Coughing up toilet water and looking around for his pants which are now missing, Vince is carried out of the party on a stretcher and transported to the local government loony bin.

It's easy to blame this generation for standing by and doing nothing. However, when the only news that is reported is 15 second clips of child murders, or viscious right vs left bashing, it is hard to be aware. yes it was blissful ignorance, but no one knew any better. I dont think it is cowardice,i think its apathy on our part. When we see things like the vietnam war, iraq war, and the patriot act happening, and no matter how hard we fight, the government doesnt listen to the people, then you start to think you have little if any power to decide the direction this country goes in. People need to stop watching According to Jim (if you watch that show you should be shot publicly anyways), and start realizing how shitty things have become.

Just because we voted for the lesser of 2 evils, doesnt mean we have no right to compain. If you dont vote, than you have a right to complain, but you also have the chance that canidate A. will be elected who is shittier than canidate B. I like jesse Ventura's idea of putting a - None of the above - on the voting ballet. It lets the government know that you are here participating in the system, but you dont like the choices that have been shoved down your throat.

You are wrong, there have been riots going on in several european countries as well as a revolt in iceland (or atleast i think it was iceland). Citizens marching down the street demanding change is the sign of a healthy government, a government that is being forced by its people to actually SERVE the people. We as American citizens think we're too "civilized" to march down the streets demanding change, but we're not civilized, we're pussified. Discention is the greatest form of patriotism.

So citizens in the European countries and Iceland took up weapons, violently overthrew their government, and installed their own, like the French Revolution I mentioned? Because it sounds like you're talking about the same old "stand in the streets and yell shit hoping someone's listening" that's been going on for a while with no effect.

I went to the protest on the Mall opposing the troop surge a while back, and lost all my faith in protesting. It was a goddamn circus, and despite the number of people that showed up, the government did whatever the hell they wanted to anyway. The voices of a million people are easily drowned out by the silence and inaction of the other 305,000,000.

"Dissension" is the greatest form of patriotism, but thinking about change or wishing for change while doing effectively nothing isn't dissension; it's being a lazy idealist.
