Apparently you don't if you can't understand that even though as a percentage of the overall household population the number may decrease, there are far more gun owners.
That's not even considering that, in typical deceptive anti-guntard fashion, they've conveniently omitted that the number of households has increased by about double since 1973 and consists of many more single individual and single parent households which skews the comparison and would account for far more than the difference just on that basis alone. That is, granting their number for the moment, while the percentage for ownership may have declined by 5%, the number of households has increased by about 100%. If there truly were some movement away from having a gun in the home, then the reduction would be expected to be far higher beyond the household increase plus some.
Also doesn't mention that the basis for the ownership numbers is shaky to begin with since they're self-reported not based on some objective source and many these days will not answer such questions when someone calls doing a survey. More objective, independent sources (e.g., permit registrations, sales numbers, etc.) Show far greater increased.
The facts are that there are substantially more gun owners, more new gun owners, more are women (being the fastest growing group), and more guns purchased for defensive use in the home and for carry purposes (particularly among women) than hunting and sporting purposes now.
Keep throwing them up and I'll keep shooting them down. All it does is to provide good examples of how the anti-guntards have to be deceptive since the facts aren't on their side.
