Thinking about a Mac
Posted by: Decrapitated ()
Date: September 15, 2014 04:11PM

I have used PC's since PC's were invented and my 6 year old Dell is dying and on life support. I have a few friends who insist a Mac is the way to go.

Is a Mac like an iPad because Im no big fan of my iPad. What are the plusses and minuses of a Mac?

What says the pundits of FU?

if your a consumer, it's a consumer friendly deal

if your a potential competitor, no matter what you buy gov worker has a slight advantage over you, as they hoard these: ...

and they insist your out of date (forced upgrade, lack of tools) and insist on "winning" every time trust me. they "always win" by making your shit not work. and they insure no money ever gets downstream and hire foreigners and family: not you.

it's only a slight advantage, what they have keys to ...

Opinion only:

I have a windows laptop and a mac laptop. Everything my windows laptop can do, my mac can do better (except for gaming (from what I have heard, I'm not a gamer).

I prefer my mac. If you get a mac, make sure to run free antivirus called sophos. Not as much worry about viruses but you can stop the spread of viruses to other windows users.

Again, just an opinion.

mac has a far better record on having NO VIRUSES TO BEGIN WITH than microsft

infact microsft/mc'afee, who have a revolving door with the gov, is suspected by many to be the ones who created many microsoft viruses for the purpose of create a need to sell anti-virus

---------------------
few mac (unix) users ever report viruses and few if any run anti-virus software even though it is free

---------------------
ubantu i'd stay away from. they broke away from linux while holding keys to it, used the keys to damage debian linux, make ubantu incompatible with linux, ubantu doesn't work right without paying them monthly fees, and is easily hacked into by foreigners who controlled the takeover. not the kind of people you want in your online banking. far from it. and i've seen android complaints about ubantu being a source of problesm - though i don't work with that: not my problem!

gov jobs or gov schools (mmost) may require you to use microsoft on chinese made electronics

especially if your a student: check requirements of software you may buy (or if your a gov worker: steal using someone else's tax money)

some of those classes (chinese electronics engineering? and building engineering taught in usa by foreign teachers w/CAD, transmitting our tech to other countries to build buildings there...) require microsoft, who is afiliated with asia but also stock invested gov workers (wow, wonder why it only works on their stuff: they used your taxes to insure it)

Virginia, many other states, are famous for having fired all the unix/mac staffers and requiring all classes using computers to use chinese/microsoft stuff - right during time of the democrat takeover

that's far less true today - but check

new BSD (not the one mac uses), like ubantu, has huge amt of foreingers hacking it. very common new users report a computer that was working, after many install attempts, was not even turning ON. also upgrade or simple software installs breaking everything. and broken java.

too many other Linux to be aware of and try these days which is a problem in itself. many are good. but panning them all out and choosing: hope you have time. but staying "compatible with unix" too: hope you have a shitload of time - more and more hacked, but possible

microsoft destroyed or attempted to destroy all usa electronic products - always seeming to work on china products

microsoft's pad is made in china. IRA / crooks in seattle wash state (communists?) are close to china

i called china about making a printer driver. they asked me if i worked for microsoft. when i said no they hung up.

-------------------------
if you want to pad the pocket of theives who never wrote software but spent money like kings and stole software, had gov write upgrades (them and china) for them didn't pay. a company that promoted viruses and cause people to spend 1/2 part of their life re-booting, and that tried to kill off all usa cmputer and electronics makers. buy microsoft.

sure they won't lie to you. china's waiting to "sell" you a pad.

I switched the entire family over to Mac computers, iPhones, and our home wireless network to Mac 5 years ago.

My life has been so much easier for the past 5 years because everyone is self-sufficient and I don't have to step in to help fix PC's, Windows/Software compatibility issues, reboot hung machines, trouble-shoot, etc. We have not had one virus/malware incident. Don;t have to by virus/malware protection software anymore or run system scans.

There is a short adjustment period, but once you've switched away from PC's and Windows, you will be shocked out how much simpler and functionally elegant the end-user experience can and should be.

Highly recommend that if you make the switch to Mac, you take the orientation class at the Mac store.

I have now converted parents, both in-laws, and the rest of our family over to Mac. All the people that used to call me for help or to come over and fix their PC's no longer call me any more.

Did the same thing here 2-3 years ago, probably won't go back to Windows devices ever. OSX is just easier to work with and I never have problems. I bought my parents an iMac last year just so I could stop all the late night "Windows 8" phone calls that lasted for hours. Apple products are just easier to work with. You do have to pay alot for them, but the hardware is quality.

It's just a better platform overall, unless you're a real techie who likes to tinker with things.

If you are a Windows user from way back, then MacOS will probably be confusing and non-intuitive.

For an absolute beginner, MacOS is probably more intuitive. Additionally, Mac's new walled garden makes the machine safer for novices.

In case it matters I have used Windows since 3.1 and MacOS since before MultiFinder (the halcyon days of yore).

re-read the sentence dummy.

they're pricey but higher end hardware.

you can buy win stuff of the same quality, but you can also find cheap windows machines that are crappy.

Apple only offers a select line, they don't sell cheapo devices.

Not entirely true.Have you seen the Mini or some of the lower-end laptops?

In general at the higher end you're right. But even there Apple's product cycle is relatively slow and they routinely get lapped by tech more readily available on the PC side. i.e., Buy a high-end Mac today and 6 months from now you'll be able to buy something on the PC side that smokes it for $750.

The old OSX vs Windows dilema. They both work fine.

Mac: vastly fewer viruses, very intuitive, and the highest ranking customer service

PC: lots of options, more software for Windows, less expensive

If you are just surfing the web, using Office (or LibreOffice), and email...then get a Windows-based machine. If you want a more "refined" experience and use stuff like FaceTime and want your computer to run texts/calls with your iphone (new in OSX Yosemite) then go with the Mac.

Don't you have to give your name, credit card info and address to Apple to set up your Apple ID?

If you're not a gamer, go with a Mac. I've been a mac user for the better part of a decade. My family used PCs. Finally, all but one has gotten tired of viruses, crashes, laptops dying after 3 years and all of that. Now everythign seamlessy integrates with the various iphones and ipads. The one holdout is a gamer and subscribes to the PC Master Race line of thinking.

Macs are just so user friendly and reliable. My 2004 MacBook Pro is still humming along perfectly fine.

Your response shows your lack of knowledge or just plain ignorance, typical for a lib. The hardware used in Macintosh PC's is THE SAME FUCKING HARDWARE used in any other X86 platform. When Apple abandoned the Power PC, due to slow development, they no longer had a hardware advantage. The only fucking difference is the OS and the price.

You're a fucking douche bag.

My kids use Linux and Windoze and never have any issues. As a matter of fact, they built there own gaming rigs. So, my 7 and 9 year old are smarter than you. Not a shocker, you're a lib.

I think I may just build a Hackintosh in spite of your stupidity.

I have a Mac mini that's still going strong after 6 years, I keep plugged into my home theater system, mostly use it for video streaming and as a home stereo, and for video and photo editing. It's a great device IMO, bought it in 08 and never once had an issue with it. Have it wifi'd to my airport time capsule which is convenient for sharing stuff between my MacBook and our iphones.

A picture, as they say, is worth a 1000 words, so take a close look at this photo taken at a conference in San Jose, CA two years ago. Notice the machine the Microsoft employee is using in the Microsoft Booth while promoting their Microsoft cloud solutions? Do you really think you'd ever see the other way around?

That should sum up the comparative strengths and weaknesses of the two platforms.

They're fine for what they are. Not exactly cutting edge though or anything top of the line as was said. Which was the point.

You can do most of what you use it for with a $30 ARM-based chipset about the size of your thumb now.

if Microsoft continues to make junk like Win 8 I might never go back. I was satisfied with XP for many years but switched to mac to avoid the atrocious Windows 8. I'm much happier with Apple now. They'd really have to shit the bed before I switched back to Microsoft crap.

If you're too simple to figure out how to turn off or switch the parts of the interface that most people complained about with Win 8, then maybe you should.

Apple has plenty of irritants and bugs itself. The main difference is that I've seen in dealing with both is that people tend to just accept it more on the Apple side....

"I can't figure out how to__________."
"Oh, you can't do that. Apple's interface engineers determined that you shouldn't and you should do that the way that we designed it."
"Oh, OK. That makes sense."

"I can't figure out how to ___________."
"Oh, let me show you... You just click here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. See how 'intuitive' that was?"
"Oh, yes. That's great. I think..."
