Fast-food workers plan nationwide protest Thursday

http://money.cnn.com/2014/09/01/news/companies/fast-food-worker-strike/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

The campaign to get fast-food workers paid at least $15 a hour resumes later this week.

Union organizers say workers will walk off their jobs Thursday in 150 cities nationwide. Restaurants that they say will be affected include McDonald's (MCD), Burger King (BKW) , Wendy's and KFC, which is owned by Yum Brands (YUM).

The action would be the latest in a two-year effort to get employers to pay them a minimum wage of $15 an hour and allow them to form unions without retaliation.

Nancy Salgado, a 27 year old single mother of a 3 year old boy and an 8 year old girl, plans to strike.

Salgado works at a McDonald's in the Logan Square area of Chicago earning $8.25 an hour, or about $600 a month take home pay.

After splitting rent and utilities with 3 roommates, and paying for child care, she's left with a little over $100 a month for food and everything else.

"If I have a dollar at the end of the month it's a miracle," Salgado said.

Currently, the median pay for fast-food workers is just over $9 an hour, or about $18,500 a year. That's roughly $4,500 lower than the Census Bureau's poverty threshold level of $23,000 for a family of four.

Thursday's action would come more than a month after the National Labor Relations Board's general counsel ruled that McDonald's is a joint employer that exerts substantial power over working conditions at its franchisees. The ruling, if upheld, means McDonald's could be held liable for labor violations at its more than 12,000 franchisee-owned restaurants.

McDonald's has contended that franchisees operate as independent businesses and that, therefore, it's not liable.

In March, McDonald's workers filed seven class-action lawsuits in New York, California and Michigan over wage theft violations. The suits allege that McDonald's has forced employees to work off the clock, not paid them overtime and struck hours off their time cards.

McDonald's did not respond to a request for comment on the status of the class action suits or the preliminary ruling by the National Labor Relations Board.

Union organizers say the movement has elevated the debate about inequality in the U.S. and helped raise the minimum wage in some states, including Connecticut and New Jersey.

Public policy group Demos says CEO compensation in the industry since 2000 quadrupled to $24 million, while the average fast-food worker's wage only increased 0.3%. Fast-food CEOs make 1,000 times more than the average worker in the industry, according to Demos.

U.S. census data show that the face of the fast-food worker has changed dramatically over the years. Workers over the age of 20 now make up 70% of the workforce and nearly 40% have children. A third of them have spent some time in college.

Salgado, who didn't finish high school, said she'll do whatever she has to to win the fight for a $15 minimum wage and a union.

"My 8 year old daughter tells me 'Everything is OK mommy,' and I tell her, 'yes,'" said Salgado. "But when she goes to sleep I know it's not OK."

So if you make $23,001, you aren't in poverty.

So she dropped out of high school (I assume she hasn't gotten a GED yet) and popped out two children that she couldn't afford, yet thinks she deserves more money to do a job teenagers do over summer break.

I work at Bronco Burger, it really sucks man. You have to fry their greasy food, you have to pollish everything, and the manager is an asshole. These workers need tobe treated better.

^ ...right there.

Why people think that an employer is supposed to cover all of their bad decisions in life, I don't know. Don't get pregnant at 19, don't have even more kids that you can't afford, stay in school, and your problems are solved.

If I'm working for the government and want to fuck up and have 6 more kids, they're going to give me a raise to cover the cost? I dun thin so mang.

I like this comment:

http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/fightfor15-fast-food-worker-nancy-salgado-mcdonalds/Content?oid=14067953

First of all, it does not look like "Nancy" is missing too many meals.

Furthermore, she "decided" to have another child, without the benefit of a husband, to augment the first out of wedlock baby she brought into this world.

Sounds like Nancy has made some real bad decisions in her life and now wants McDonald's to pay up for her mistakes.

Nancy is actually part of the problem. Instead of working the fast food job as a teen and then moving on to school or a trade or something else, Nancy decides to stay there, in the way and depriving another teen from the opportunity to get work experience and make pocket change, which is what minimum wage is intended. It is not intended to support a family on.
Go to the State's Attorney's office, file child support cases against your baby daddy (or daddies) and then go back to school and make something of yourself, instead of wasting energy on this.

Absolutely pathetic. Get a new job.

Why? Unless you're a manager, you need to move the fuck on.

Fast food work was never intended to provide sufficient income for a family. Get over it.

A retard can perform the tasks in a McDonalds restaurant. Not many people have what it takes to be the CEO of a company. Pay is distributed accordingly.

Sounds like they should spend more time in college, and less time having children.

Drops out of high school. Feels entitled to $15/hr...

You should tell her that everything's not OK... Because she's gonna have to get a work permit in 7 years to support your dumb ass.

There should be a BMI (body mass index) evaluation when applying for government assistance. Anyone testing out of the normal range (overweight/obese) should be denied. Too many fat fucks buying Doritos and Cola with our tax money.

It's okay, pretty soon Nancy won't have to worry about not making $15 an hour, because her new replacement will be coming. McD's already has 7,000 in place and plans for more.

So you work a fast food job for several years and somehow haven't earned a higher rate of pay or advanced to some stroke title like "assistant shift mgr" or something?

Sounds to me like you are doing it wrong. but I guess in the Libturd Universe, all workers are good and the individual franchisees should throw money at fucks like Nancy Salgado.

Stupid libturds don't understand that raising the MW to something like $15 would ultimately give advantage to Walmart, McD's over small and independent businesses.

But it makes them feel good and they "care about the little guy". Of course.

I don't think people should be able to stand up for themselves and push their employers for raises. They should just shut up and keep working, and accept that the Lord Jesus Christ wants them to fry hamburgers for a living.

WHy doesn't your boss give you $350K a year? Are you not worth it?

For these people it's not a question of what they're worth, or in econ 101 terms, what value they bring to their employer, rather it's what they deserve because of their external monetary obligations and the lifestyle they think they should have, even if they offer no skills or experience that couldn't be replaced in an afternoon by the next person in line for their job.

Well the oily faced fatso in question was knocked up at 18 and again at 23. She could have easily aborted both, it doesn't appear she has a man in her life. I think we can all agree she's getting plenty to eat.

She has to be a pretty mundane employee if her boss is willing to let her walk and then go thru the hassle of hiring/training someone new instead of throwing her another dollar an hour.

Attention DUmbshits: Fast food is NOT supposed to be a career, it is a stepping stone. It's a free country, get a night job, work somewhere else. STFU with your socialist Obama loving and trying to destroy the job market for people paid by merit.

Love how they made sure to include the following:

"Public policy group Demos says CEO compensation in the industry since 2000 quadrupled to $24 million, while the average fast-food worker's wage only increased 0.3%. Fast-food CEOs make 1,000 times more than the average worker in the industry, according to Demos."

Like that has any bearing on her situation. Just more class warfare, "it's not fair" clap trap from the left.

If workers could make $15 an hour as a dickhead fast food cashier, why on Earth would they (or anyone) want to do physically demanding pick and shovel work for the same price?

Pay has usually been based on difficulty of work and merit.

But libtards usually aren't in business, they are just in other peoples business.

They're treated like garbage, because they are in fact... garbage. Why is that so hard to understand? Advice has been given:

- Do not have kids when you can not afford to support them.
- Do not reproduce with guys who aren't going to stick around.
- Get a new fucking job!

Or just get promoted at the same place. She could have easily made manager after a decade on the job.

Heres part of the problem- government probably subsidizes this fat whore with food stamps and maybe a housing voucher. She probably qualifies because of her low income.

The taxpayer is picking up her slack- her slack being she fucking refuses to do anything but work at McDonalds. If they would cut her fatass off, just maybe society could force these lops to build some character and try something new.

I know Spanish women who have 2 and 3 fucking jobs. Something tells me this fatty rushes home after an easy shift and spends her evenings watching American Idol and sending OMG LOL messages to her fat friends.

+1 absolutely. There are tons of rags to riches stories, especially from productive and work minded immigrants.

Here's a novel idea for you teatards. Take 5 bucks to Safeway and buy your own ground beef. Christ, then you could eat hamburgers all day and not worry that someone is earning money for a living.

"Currently, the median pay for fast-food workers is just over $9 an hour, or about $18,500 a year. That's roughly $4,500 lower than the Census Bureau's poverty threshold level of $23,000 for a family of four."

That fails to assume there's a second breadwinner. If both worked at $9 an hour, they would be grossing roughly $36,000 a year before all the government assistance.

They get 50% off meals. They could feed a family of four on Baconaters meals for about $10.

WTF does that have to do with a fat, probably illegal, high school dropout, who can't keep her legs closed wanting to be paid the equivalent of about $30K/year for saying "Super-size that?"

That's more btw than Fairfax County pays as a starting salary.

As a "teabagger" "republicunt" "right-wing" "guntard"...I will happily stand behind $15/hour as a minimum wage under one condition:

Eliminate all food stamps and welfare for everyone. I already support a flat corporate tax, so don't start your bullshit about government subsidizing corporations. Plus, corporations don't pay taxes anyway. They pass taxes on in the prices of goods and services.

If a fatass, low-life, uneducated bafoons can't do a simple minimum wage job at $15/hour, then there's no hope for them. At $15/hour, that would equate to over $30k per year. If they can keep their legs shut and actually find a partner who would stay with them, that would be $60k per household.

Agree? Disagree?

That's exactly what these "no borders" retards don't understand. Every migranté coming in devalues the wage capabilities of the last one. There's more supply of low / no skill labor than there is demand. And it's only going to get worse with the relentless drive to automation.

+1000 to pretty much everything that's been said already.

An Instructional Assistant in FCPS is required to have the following qualifications/education:

Graduation from high school, plus one year of progressively more responsible experience working with students and completion of an associate’s degree OR two years of college (48 credit hours) OR demonstration through a state or local academic assessment knowledge of, and the ability to assist with, reading, writing, and mathematics (or reading, writing, and mathematics readiness)
instruction required in school-wide Title 1 schools, preferred in all others. Knowledge and understanding of child growth and development; knowledge of instructional procedures and practices applicable to assignment; knowledge of the instructional goals and policies of the Fairfax County Public Schools;
knowledge of subject matter reinforcement practices of the classes to which assigned; ability to implement teachers' instructional plans in assigned field; considerable patience and ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and faculty members; ability to assist with the implementation
of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior; ability to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks; and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Their starting salary is $14.47/hour ($20,615 for 190 days at 7.5 hours/day). You telling me these people flipping burgers for a living which requires exactly ZERO skill and NO education expect to make MORE than that?

Fuck that shit.

Yeah, pretty much. But that's the new reality. What makes you think we like it anymore than you do? Stupid, irresponsible people are breeding like flies. And it's not just blacks and Hispanics; there are plenty of 'white trash' doing the same thing. Whites are especially good at taking advantage of the new welfare - disability benefits.

But we're stuck with these people, and it's only going to get worse. There's no point in saying that people like this woman could have aspired higher if they had just tried harder. I doubt that they could. Would you hire this woman as a receptionist? Would you hire her as an overnight stocker? This is probably as good as it gets for this woman. Even if she had not irresponsibly had children she's still stuck with her limitations. There are millions of poor people who are just too intellectually or culturally impoverished to do much better than they are.

So what do we do with these people? Right now they are supplementing their poverty wages with 'free' (our) money. Most of you would probably cut off their benefits. It's not going to happen - even under a Republican administration - and its not fair to the kids. Maybe if they earned a halfway livable wage then they would be more circumspect in their decisions. It's a lot easier to spend other people's money than your own. I don't know the answers, but the current situation is becoming untenable.

It's comments like those that make white people that think they are above every other white person or person of color look dumb and racist as hell. Usually these are the ones that put down everyone, want a job of a rich white woman (and treated as one), cocky about what is the best school, are atheists, and like the cock.

First of all, it's obvious this girl Nancy can only afford to take home the leftover Mcdonalds meals her place of work provides. How can anyone afford to feed themselves the made expensive by white people while raping south american countries to get their exclusive organic food from there to stay healthy?

"Furthermore" it's obvious this girl's non elite poor background by her immigrant central or mexican parents is a domino effect meaning that parents working everyday all day for meager laborer or maid wages and no parental guidance in her life made her more likely to get knocked up at a younger age same goes for those kids who join gangs who have no parental presence due to neglect of workaholic parents. Furthermore meager wages earned by immigrant parents and her meager wage at mcdonalds as a teen could hardly afford her to go to a university when she's taking care of a child. If she could afford to leave her fast food job and go to trade school to make more money I have no doubt she would.

Instead of bitching about this lady can anyone donate for her to go to trade school? no? then shut the fuck up.

I lived off PB&J and scrambled eggs for a year when I first moved out on my own. I'm still here, aren't I? Stop being so dramatic.

She can def qualify but how will she make her living? She can't quit her Mcd's job because she relies on it for rent, food, kids clothes, her clothes, gas (if she drives, car repairs also add on the cost of babysitting. Who will take care of her 2 kids? Any volunteers? Anyone care to donate for her babysitting so she can go to school to earn her $15 an hour job doing something else than fast food so they can quit yapping on here?

The cost of attendance with financial aid should cover some of her personal financial needs; she could still go part time to school if she can't quit the day job.

Blessed are the murderous.

Wow... I'm fairly confident that an 8th grader could have put together a better couple of sentences.

Are you aware of run-on sentences?

Sounds like these "immigrant parents" should have had an abortion.

I'd gladly donate for you to be thrown into a lake with a bowling ball tied to your feet.

I currently make $16, I'm only 21.

If the minimum wage gets raised to $15 per hour, is my employer forced to give me a raise? Or am I stuck making $1 over minimum wage?

Eating PB&J daily really is a first world problem. It's not ideal, but perfectly doable. Can't be choosy when you're on a budget.

That's a good point. If the fat cow's income goes up 85%, shouldn't every one else's? There are people out there who sacrificed, studied in high school, didn't make babies, went to college while working, and are making something of themselves. Why should a retarded hippo breeder be rewarded?

That's a lot for just being 21. Seattle passed their min wage req at $15 for underpaid workers and it's working out great for them. The majority of workers in the country are min wage workers many living in expensive cities that they can't afford.

There should be a period after "Wow". Your second sentence is incomplete. See me in my office if you have any further questions.

Uh, no. The $15 level hasn't even kicked in yet and business involved with many lower-end workers already are saying that they'll not be able to do it.

Obviously false. There are around 150 million US workers. Of those, about 75 million are hourly workers. Of those about 3.3 million are workers at or below the federal minimum wage.

Comment on the original post:

She's fat, obviously eats well, uneducated, does a job requiring no skills, is a whore with multiple kids, an obviously terrible decision-maker...and yet she feels entitled to an income of someone who has made better choices in life. And she feels like consumers should pay more for goods and services so as to afford her eating habits.

The end.
