very simply: if corporations are people, then people must be corporations

very simply: if corporations are people, then people must be corporations. Which means people should be able to avail themselves of all the juicy corporate-welfare tax breaks given to corporate legal entities.

It's pretty easy to follow this train of thought down some very interesting tracks. We'd start by allowing individuals to only be taxed on their profits instead of their income, personally.

THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT!

According to Martin Sullivan, the chief economist at Tax Analysts, if individuals were treated like corporations, I could set up an affiliate called “Catherine Rampell Bermuda,” have it pay my college tuition and then declare that the affiliate owns the resulting degree. I could then tell the IRS that everything I earn above the average high school grad’s wage should be recorded as income in Bermuda, since it’s all derived from a Bermuda-based asset. Until I decide to repatriate those diploma-derived earnings, I’ve built myself a tax-free IRA.

Nothing has ever prevented you from forming a corporation.

No, it works one way and not the other. Corporations are afforded similar rights to people.

The very term means "body-like," as in a person's body. The idea is that a corporation has a legal presence, just like that of a person. In a contract it will sometimes refer to "persons, natural and legal," meaning a person or corporation, respectively. So while the rest of the moronic world thinks it's so stupid that corporations are people, the fact is that, legally speaking, it's been like that for hundreds of years.

If corporations are people and people can own corporations either outright or as shareholders, then isn't this the same as slavery if people are owning people?

OP:

Clearly you have no experience with real life. You can indeed set yourself up as a corporation. Many sole proprietor freelance contractors do just that so they can keep their corporation's earnings, tax liabilities, and business liabilities separate from their personal finances.

Before mouthing off with what you think is some clever comment you should check your facts. Dumbass.

oh in the 80's maybe 1/2 the people in fairfax smoked pot on weekends never at work (except loosers even partiers didn't like). and they did good work pretty enthusiastic about work per say.

that doesn't mean you want managers and leaders doing it - someone has to tell the idiots why the deer crossing sign is there ...

Slavery is ownership of "human chattel," not corporate chattel.

We all know that life begins at Incorporation.

Slavery was the legal fiction that people are property, while Corporate Personhood is the legal fiction that property is a person.

Think of the millions of corporations that have died defending this country.

The founding fathers envisioned a Government that would regulate people to protect corporate rights and shield corporate political donations.

Bankruptcy is Big Government sponsored, and tax-payer funded, murder.

Corporate political donations are merely freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

When I get horny, I do a Corporate Booty Call and write it off.

"Coporate personhood"?

Does this mean you can't abort them four months in?

Rather than focus on the newly-fashionable tax-avoidance strategy of changing corporate nationality, it makes more sense to tax any global corporation on all income earned in the United States (with high penalties for shifting that income abroad), and no longer tax "American" corporations on revenues earned outside America. Most other nations already follow this principle. In other words, let's stop worrying about whether big global corporations are "American." We can't win that game. Focus instead on what we want global corporations of whatever nationality to do in America, and on how we can get them to do it.
