How Do You Work in Fast Food for So Long?

CHICAGO (AP) — Fast-food workers say they're prepared to escalate their campaign for higher wages and union representation, starting with a national convention in suburban Chicago where more than 1,000 workers will discuss the future of the effort that has spread to dozens of cities in less than two years.

"I personally think we need to get more workers involved and shut these businesses down until they listen to us," perhaps even by occupying the restaurants, said Cherri Delisline, a 27-year-old single mother from Charleston, South Carolina, who has worked at McDonald's for 10 years and makes $7.35 an hour.

Nancy Salgado of Chicago said she and her two children share a bedroom after being forced to move into an apartment with two other adults after her hours at McDonald's were cut from 40 a week to about 24.
"I don't think $15 will make me rich. ... I just want an apartment for my family and be able to have my kids in their own room, to not have to wait for the washing machine or the bathtub, and I don't want to be behind on bills if I take time off or get sick," said Salgado, who earns minimum wage after 12 years with the company.

Every day I'm off I just smoke and watch movies, or play COD. Too lazy to find another job. I have been with papa johns for almost 8 years now. Love it!

But unlike those people I get to live in my parents basement, they only charge me $200 per month. I also make $9.15 now which is pretty good.

I worked a couple of minimum wage jobs when I was a youngster right out of high school and between semesters in college but I didn't expect to stay there for the rest of my life. If this woman thinks she's having problems now wait until the layoffs and closures that result in a $15.00 per hour minimum wage. Anybody who thinks that won't happen is living in a dream world.

"I personally think we need to get more workers involved and shut these businesses down until they listen to us, perhaps even by occupying the restaurants."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah... See how long that lasts until you get your lazy ass thrown out for causing a disturbance in their place of business. Dumb cunt. Of course, you'll claim police brutality when you refuse to leave and they're forced to physically remove you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...said Cherri Delisline, a 27-year-old single mother from Charleston, South Carolina, who has worked at McDonald's for 10 years and makes $7.35 an hour."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you work anywhere for 10 years and still make minimum wage, the problem is YOU. Take some responsibility for your own failures. I can think of plenty of places that pay more than Mcdonalds. Costco... Wegmans... Waiting tables... Plus, it's not anybody's problem but your own that you're raising kids by yourself. You and the worthless sack of shit that you chose to reproduce with.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Nancy Salgado of Chicago said she and her two children share a bedroom after being forced to move into an apartment with two other adults after her hours at McDonald's were cut from 40 a week to about 24.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tough shit. You shouldn't be naive enough to believe that your employer is there to cater to your personal needs. Businesses have no obligation to keep you at full-time hours. You work for THEM.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I don't think $15 will make me rich. ... I just want an apartment for my family and be able to have my kids in their own room, to not have to wait for the washing machine or the bathtub, and I don't want to be behind on bills if I take time off or get sick"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plenty of people want things. Doesn't mean you'll get them. Sometimes things just don't work out how you want. Employers will assess how productive their employees are to the business and pay them accordingly. Nobody deserves $15/hr for flipping burgers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...said Salgado, who earns minimum wage after 12 years with the company."
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ugh. Do I need to repeat myself? Sick of these entitled shitheads...

I gather some people feel that they should be rewarded for showing up for 8 hours and doing the absolute minimum required for 10 years. Why would the company reward you with a higher salary for just doing the minimum?

She's a good argument for not having kids. No time for school. No time for work. She's frittered away her 20's where she should be focused on self-improvement.

Well, there's that. And with certain jobs, you're just going to end up hitting a glass ceiling where no matter how productive a worker you are, you simply aren't going to be worth any additional money to them. When I worked at Petsmart, my hourly wage maxed out at $10.66/hr. What did I do? I found a better job and told them to beat it. Funny how that works...

Agreed. I feel that for many people, 20s is too early to be getting married and having kids. You'd see a drop in divorce rates if people waited till their 30s to settle down. Too many guys get pressured by their family and girlfriends to settle down earlier than they would have liked. Too many women feel the need to get married when they check out their Facebook and become envious that all their friends from high school are starting families.

These are entry-level jobs. You're supposed to make very little. Mandatory minimum wage is bullshit. When you're 13 years old you have a paper rout and make just enough money to blow on video games. When you're in high school you work at McDonalds. When you're in college you work as a waiter/waitress. And when you graduate college you get a real job.

Or, you have no ambition and are fucking lazy, and piss away your days working for peanuts and then one day realize you wasted your life and now want other people to pay for it.

When you have a felony conviction your choices for employment are slim.

Food service industry
Landscaping/snow removal
Construction general labor
Quick lube industry
Trash removal

Most jobs in the janitorial arts and hotel/motel industry are even off limits because you have to be trusted with keys and alarm codes to other peoples property. In Virginia you cant even get a trades license of any kind if you have a recent felony.

I'm sure your parents are thrilled. You really don't want to live in your parents basement in your thirties. And if your parents have any sense, they won't let you. Seriously, you need a kick in the ass to find some motivation.

I am hispanic and I seent my friends make babies so I wanted one too! I am a bit older than the typical age for a hispanic to make a baby, but I thought that 23 would be a good enough age. I hope my jerb at safeway can pay me enough so I can buy that BMW X5 I've been saving up for. I make $10/hr right now. Think I can do it?

Women have peak fertility in their 20s... getting married in your 20s is not the worst thing. A lot of these increases in mental illnesses and disability in children have been linked to older mothers.

Early to mid thirties is still fine, it's those who try to have kids at 40+ that have issues.

Women who have their children later in life have higher lifetime earnings and a wider range of opportunities than younger mothers.

When you're in your 20s, you may still be figuring out a career path and establishing yourself professionally. If you step off this road to have a baby, it can be hard to get back on track.

Liberalism, that's how. Shredding the work ethic and morals that made this country great and replacing them with irresponsibility and entitlement. This whole liberal idea that everything should be fair is a joke. Life is hard. Work hard and you'll do great. Don't believe libs.

What a load of crap.By 21 you should have a college degree and a ton of ambition and no fear about starting a career. The only reason a person is in such a position is because they have been brainwashed by libs not to try and that they are owed something for nothing.

Having a baby in your 40's is risky and not many people plan to do that.

What I don't understand is why they don't move up into management....I mean, how long does it take to get promoted from cashier to shift manager to store/restaurant manager? Why stay in the same position for 10+ years?

Blessed are the murderous.

Guess there is no need to point it out because you already did. Asshole! This current system is designed to make everybody work their tails off, or not and believe they have been given every chance at prosperity. There is only so much room at the top and much at the bottom. Didn't make it in Tech? You should have tried better in Math and Science/ knowing full well that most people are not equipped. Even if they were? Whats a world of all leaders with no bitches stripped of all self-worth? Women are you fat? When they are thin and beautiful they are just thrown away when their use is over anyhow.
How many sharks are in the ocean and how many minnows? The minnows are called the useless eaters yet, its the sharks that would die without them. The minnows only believe they need the sharks because the sharks steak the oceans sonic vibrations to make the minnows draw to the sharks and get devoured.

Agree with 99% of this. Only thing I'd correct is "Work hard and you MIGHT do great."

Working hard certainly can't hurt, but even the most motivated people sometimes just don't have what it takes. Libs fail to understand that the actual meaning of the "American Dream" is the opportunity to pursue success. If every single person was able to succeed in life, there would be no American Dream. A certain amount of people failing and getting left behind is part of what makes it work.

Because only Obama is man enough to provide free abortions to needy women. If Conservatardz didn't hate women and children of color they would be willing to pay for abortions. Abortions are the key to providing a easy lifestyle for the poor. Vote Obama.

There's an irresponsible culture prevalent in the lower-income black community where young guys take pride in knocking up multiple women.

I could see entering fast food, as a job, and heck to a point I could see getitng training and such to make it a career as you move into management.

but after 3-4 years if youhave not moved up into management from being a burger assembler, if you have done in house triaining and such, then its time to move on...

if you have not done training then you deserve to be burger assmbly person.

As they say, the world needs ditch diggers. Not everone is cut out to be management. dealwith it. if all you are making is 8 bucks an hour, then don't live beyond your means. IE don't squirt out kids...take a second job, get an education. BETTER YOURSELF...

She feels entitled to having an apartment with a separate room for her kids and then not to be behind on her bills. Should have thought about this before popping out kids she couldnt afford and getting into debt she can't repay. Where are the kids' dads?

mc'donalds is selling low quality frozen meat hamburgers for $1 - what they need is customers who can afford them to make real burgers from ground meat from the super-market like they used to

with several (often illegal) employees working at over min. wage - just how many hambergurs an hour do they have to push out the door to even break even

yea sure do a strike on mc'donalds they got "plenty" of room to head down hill

Tell Nancy Salgado and her bastard children that the whole concept of McDonalds, cheap low nutrition high fat and calorie food ,doesn't work when you have to charge more because the employees won't work cheap.

Titanfall is way better than COD. Way better. So much better COD BO3 is ripping it off big time.
