Do African Americans use White's Ferry?

The ferry is named after Jubal Early, a confederate general from the Civil War. From Wikipedia:
Early was an outspoken believer in white supremacy and despised the abolitionists. In the preface to his memoirs, Early wrote about former slaves as "barbarous natives of Africa", whom he believed were "in a civilized and Christianized condition" as a result of their enslavement. He continued:
The Creator of the Universe had stamped them, indelibly, with a different color and an inferior physical and mental organization. He had not done this from mere caprice or whim, but for wise purposes. An amalgamation of the races was in contravention of His designs or He would not have made them so different. This immense number of people could not have been transported back to the wilds from which their ancestors were taken, or, if they could have been, it would have resulted in their relapse into barbarism. Reason, common sense, true humanity to the black, as well as the safety of the white race, required that the inferior race should be kept in a state of subordination. The conditions of domestic slavery, as it existed in the South, had not only resulted in a great improvement in the moral and physical condition of the negro race, but had furnished a class of laborers as happy and contented as any in the world.[

Or the morons could move closer to their jobs instead of driving 100 plus miles a day clogging up the roads. They always argue they can afford it but eliminating a $1000 a month on commuting costs could get you a place much closer to work.

If you live close enough to work that you don't need a car, that's probably about a thousand dollars a month.

Actually, I bill my clients that exact figure when I have to travel using my own car and its not a dump truck. That's the current gov reimbursement rate.

It is a hold over from long ago when bridges were expensive and the amount of traffic was relatively low. Traffic on US15 which crossed the river a few miles upstream was still relatively light into the 1970s. Under the circumstances the ferry was adequate for the needs, especially given the quality of the road network leading to it. Now there is sufficient demand and road connections to justify a bridge, but my guess is that the locals don't want it.

The ferry also does brisk business - been on it many times and there's always a line of cars waiting. It's a decent way to sneak around the invariable traffic problems with 495 (especially getting across the potomac), especially if you have business in that part of southern Maryland.
Word to the wise, however - there's basically only one road that'll get you north and virtually every little town you'll drive through makes a fair living with their speed cameras.

Montgomery County is famous for them -- at least they give you a head's up warning sign -- 30 MPH ahead -- Photo enforced.

The ferry boat is no longer named after Jubal Early. Now it just has a sign that says “Historic Whites Ferry”. Not surprising.
