The airline says the landing on Midway was due to a mechanical issue and airline officials are investigating. The plane is still on Midway.

United said passengers the crew spent about seven hours on Midway Island.

A replacement aircraft was sent to Midway to pick up the passengers and the crew. That plane landed in Honolulu at 6:42 a.m. Friday.

The plane had 335 passengers on board and 13 crew members. No one was injured.

Hotel rooms were provided for those passengers who requested one. A special flight to Guam left Honolulu at 2:35 p.m. It should arrive on Guam on Saturday at 5:58 p.m. Guam time.

Teresita Smith from Maryland, who was traveling with 25 family members, says she was aboard United Flight #201.

Smith says the flight was delayed in Honolulu for several hours because of a burning smell on the aircraft. She says about five hours into the flight, the attendants began huddling and acting nervous. Eventually, the burning smell got stronger and they learned they were headed to Midway.

Some passengers aboard the Boeing 777 got very scared, according to Smith. Other passengers heard alarms going off in the back of the plane. Smith said passengers did a lot of praying.

"It was terribly frightening. There was no doubt, 100 percent emotion, of the feeling that the plane was going to go down," said Smith.

When they landed on Midway, Smith says the captain told the passengers that the fumes were strong in the cockpit and they started to lose power and the radar was going out.

Smith says passengers were taken to an abandoned gym and waited for a rescue flight to arrive. The passengers are now back in Honolulu without their luggage. Those on Midway had no way to get the luggage off of the plane.

Smith said they felt like they were in an episode of "Lost" with a broken plane on a remote island in the middle of the night.

You are fucking insane. I've been on a shitload of flights with mechanical problems - so has everyone else on this board. I hope this post is a parody.
