We need more H1bs and guest workers

Microsoft Corp. today announced a restructuring plan to simplify its operations and align the recently acquired Nokia Devices and Services business with the company's overall strategy.

These steps will result in the elimination of up to 18,000 positions over the next year. Of the total, about 12,500 professional and factory positions will be eliminated through synergies and strategic alignment of the Nokia Devices and Services business acquired by Microsoft on April 25.

The actions associated with the plan are expected to be substantially complete by Dec. 31, 2014, and fully completed by June 30, 2015.

The company expects to incur pre-tax charges of $1.1 billion to $1.6 billion over the next four quarters, including $750 million to $800 million for severance and related benefit costs, and $350 million to $800 million of asset-related charges.

If they truly are factory positions then they're likely in China anyhow.

I hate the word synergy, it's an office buzzword and corporate lingo that means nothing.

They're pushing the envelope by thinking outside the box.

Watch the job boards and see how many of these layoff positions will reappear there as new "H1B" positions.

Companies are learning to get around the taxes being proposed to try and keep them from moving the company and jobs to 3rd world countries. Restructurings can be accomplished by replacing the occupants of the former jobs in the US with dirt cheap 3rd world H1B workers here in the US. They get paid a fraction of an American workers salary; No benefits necessary; They don't need to be citizens, so they work 1-3 years on a renewable work visa and go back home where they can live like monarchs on what hey earned here, often starting businesses there.

My mothers friend from India was here for 10-12 years and became american citizen.

He came here on H1B visa as well.

Once he notified his boss of his status then his boss told him he costs the company too much and was told to train 5 other people from india to do his job or be fired.

Synergy sounds so much more positive than redundancy.

The trick was to advertise outsourced jobs so that the skills and experience required would be much greater than the salary requirements. The daily ads for computers in the Washington Post or the Times would be mostly those kinds of ads.
