If a guy who was not a Marine, puts a Marine Corp Circular sticker on their car plates, is that a form of Stolen Valor?

You could argue either side, but it certainly makes him a wanker.

long answer.. no

stolen valor is when you pretend to have served to get a benefit the general public would normally pay for, something as simple as getting a military discount is technically stolen valor

why did this person get the plate? VADMV requires you show the DD214 to get them anyway, so how do you know this person didn't serve?

I use them to cadge free drinks in bars on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Sometimes I finagle free meals, too!

Veteran plates are made that way, there is no sticker, it is all one. The sticker is the circular stick patch, you tear off the backing and stick it on.. But you're correct, the guy could have served, did not have the money to buy a ready made plate, and attached one himself. that;s fine, the Police can easily check on if it is a fraud under the FOI act. Most cops, would give a pass on it. Iwould

If the guy recieved a "less than Honorable" discharge, can't put it on the tags. And that can be verified the same way. If I was a cop and a guy put a sticker on his plate and got a DD. I'd say to take that sticker off now or I'd kick his ass.

I have a marine plate because I worked for the navy on a 6-month contract during the war in Iraq. I figure it’s ok because the Navy paid for some of my salary during that time.

I was a junior consultant at SAIC at the time and helped take meeting notes and format powerpoints...basically a secretary for the PM.

Stolen valor is pretending to be an Army personnel to get praise or discounts.

You can have symbols supporting the military just not claim that you were in the military.

You need a DD214 to get the plate in the first place, Explain how you got the plate without a DD214? "I figure" was nothing to do with it. You'd be laughed at in the DMV

You can't wear a Medal, not even a Good Conduct Medal. Wearing a medal with fraud just promotes yourself

I always assume it is stolen valor, any bumper sticker or license plate holder that says something about the driver being a vet, 99% chance it is bullshit, and I call the person on it. Rip them a new one for being phonies. Sadly, I have probably accused an actual veteran or two of being a fraud, but that's the price we pay.....

I figure maybe about 10
people who post here got even a Good Conduct; Commendation Medals are totally out of the picture. If someone here said they received a Commendation Medal, well, sorry but I'd have to see it.

And they will reveal themselves. Best to ask innocuous questions like Mess Hall duties KP, CQ, even Military chow. Military chow is pretty good, especially Marine and Navy chow. If they use that old WW2 stuff like Sos, or they had to peel potatoes, they lie!!!!

On a PU truck up in Reston . He also had a license plate from Virginia that was for the Congressional Medal of Honor , I gave him a salute with my hand over my heart and he waved back , he was the real deal

Lots of real vets have decals as the plates cost money, some are just people that have respect for the service or have a son or daughter in the military , if you asked and they said they are not vets that's ok with me but Ill let you do that as I don't need my nose busted

70 dollars for a plate in most states. They should give it to us for free. I have a military plate with just the Flag and it says VETERAN across the bottom/ If you want to expose a fraud ask him this one simple question. "What is the first thing a DI or Training Instructor teaches you when he greets you on the bus after you arrive? A real Vet would answer "That Sir is the first thing out of your mouth, from now on!!" That is the same with all branches

Most plates that shows the owner was a GI when I notice, like if crossing the street as a pedestrian I'll throw a salute. Many cops on road duties for Civilian companies salute the Vet's plate I noticed. One I see give a smart "razzel dazzel" salute

Bronze Star Silver Star plates are 10 for the plate one time and 10 for a custom message . I can see the fee for the message but these plates should be free why is the state making money of vets sacrifice and valor in combat ? The service crosses are also 10 for the plate but the MOH plate is free and free registration on a standard passenger vehicle in Virginia. BTW Virginia will not accept a DD214 for that one , confirmation must come from the branch of the service you served in to the DMV to prevent fakes from getting this plate like some have done in other states one was a judge who conned the state and all around him ! . When they came out with the PH and MOH plates there were 9 MOH plates in Virginia back in 1988 MH-1 to MH -9 . Surviving widows who are not remarried can also keep the plate and free registration. I think Democrats may be the problem here wanting every dime they can scalp

One more debacle was that the service crosses were free once like the MOH as they are the second highest valor decorations and the DFC was one of those that was free lumped into the service crosses as a cross and its second to the Silver Star that cost 10 ! That has been changed to 10 for the service crosses and DFC that all should be free

DD214s are issued from whatever Personnel Service connected with the branch. O.P.M. is the Military Term. They issue the certificates. Virginia has shit for brains and its' Fuhrer Principle (princip) points to Northam as being the reason. that crazy bastard.

The homeless bums pretending to be /Vets for cash for drugs or cigarettes are the ones that wear old donated Salvation Army supplied US Military Sweatshirts and heavy cotton/polyester hoodies in 90 degree 90% humidity weather. Don't fall for it. Sure some Vets are indeed homeless but usually not these.
